Notes From Sunday's Sermon
"LOVE COST" (
Mark 14:1-9)
You don't have to live loudly in order to live profoundly. You don't have to call attention to yourself in order to have a significant impact in this life. When you look at Mary of Bethany you see the costliness of her devotion.
Spikenard grew at the base of an exotic tree that was found high in the Himalayan Mountains in India. It was hard to merchandise because it was difficult to obtain. Alabas
ter was a fine white powder that was found in Alabaston, Egypt. When heated, alabaster would become hard and turn into a beautiful marble.
What a combination: she had ointment found only in the distant Himalayan Mountains of India and alabaster from Alabaston, Egypt, and it was all combined in this one gift. It was a precious gift of devotion. It is here that the text begs the question, "How much do you really love the Lord?" We need to understand that when your faith is right, it will cost you something. When love is right, it'll cost you something.
When your love for God is right, it will cost you time. When your love for God is right, it will cost you treasure. When your love for God is right, it will cost you commitment. It will cost you prayer time, time in the study of his Word, and time serving humanity.
People who want to shout and praise the Lord; you better let them alone. Then Jesus says, "Why do you bother her? She has done a good deed to me." The Lord is saying what this woman has done has significance beyond the obvious. If Mary had not broken her box, no one would have anointed him. But because of Mary we can truly shout, "Merry Christmas!" -USK
Because of Christ,
Pastor Ulysses Stephen King, Jr.
