“GOD OF MY PAST, MY PRESENT, and MY FUTURE” ( Revelation 22:13; Exodus 19:1-9 )

In today’s society, many of us live only in the present. We want it all now. We want immediate gratification. We don’t want to wait for anything. But we serve a God who began things, and who will also end things in His time. He was here at the beginning, and He will be here at the ending. Jesus says in our text, “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End, the First and the Last” (Rev. 22:13). That means that there was no time when God was not in existence. No one created Him or called Him into being. He has always been and He will forever be.

So what does this mean to us? I agree with Revelation 22:13. What are the implications of this truth for my daily living? How does this fact help me in living in a world of unbelief and cynicism? How does it strengthen my faith and walk with the Lord? Theologian, teacher, and philosopher, Thomas Aquinas, said, “It was necessary for man's salvation that there should be a knowledge revealed by God besides philosophical science built up by human reason ... because man is directed to God as to an end that surpasses the grasp of his reason.”

Our Scripture text from the Old Testament book of Exodus answers these questions. God told Moses to tell His people, “You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles’ wings and brought you to Myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey My voice and keep My covenant, then you shall be a special treasure to Me above all people; for all the earth is Mine” (Ex. 19:4-6). God knew how difficult it would be to get Israel to accept the validity of His commandments. So, He had to remind them of their indebtedness to Him. To sensitize their spiritual awareness, God told Moses to tell His people is essence, “I was with you in the past, I am with you now, and I will be with you in the future.”—USK
