New Labour Market Information: Youth Employment in Tourism in Canada
It is widely known that the tourism sector provides more than its share of employment opportunities for youth, including part time or seasonal work for students, many peoples' first introduction to the world of work, and entry level positions that lead to fulfilling careers as tomorrow's tourism industry leaders.
Some very interesting recent data from the Human Resource Module of the Tourism Satellite Account, 2012, on youth employment in the tourism sector in Canada:
More than half a million tourism jobs (538,000) are held by youth. This is 36% of all tourism jobs, which is slightly fewer (-2%) than in 2008. The slack was picked up by workers aged 45 and older. Since 2008, the number of tourism jobs held by older workers has increased 44,500 (11%), while there are 1,000 fewer jobs held by youth.
Almost three-quarters (72%) of tourism employees aged 15-24 are employed in food and beverage services, so the largest "youth" occupations are food counter attendants, food and beverage servers, and cooks, followed by program leaders and hosts/hostesses. The top three occupations comprise 55% of ALL youth employment in the tourism sector, while the top five represent 64%.
Produced by Statistics Canada, the Human Resource Module of the Tourism Satellite Account is emulated by countries around the world. It is the first of its kind, globally, and is unique in measuring and reconciling data on the number of tourism jobs in relation to the economy as a whole nationally and, for the first time ever, in each province and territory. It also offer valuable information about job characteristics in the Canadian tourism sector.
