California has increased their pledge to Million Women Mentors to 100,000!

Congratulations to state leaders Beth Broome, Danielle Deveau-Sires, and Nancy Kirshner-Rodriguez, California’s Steering Committee, and all the participants and mentors.   California continues with aggressive work toward building more women and girls in STEM.



Lieutenant Governor speaks at the Arkansas Association for Career and Technical Education

MWM-Arkansas Honorary Chair Lieutenant Governor Tim Griffin spoke at the Arkansas Association for Career and Technical Education during its 87th annual Summer Conference. He advocated for the benefits of career and technical education and promoted the Million Women Mentors effort to encourage more female students to pursue careers in STEM.

American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows Recognition

Dr. Judith Iriarte-Gross, one of Tennessee’s MWM State Chairs, was recognized as one of the American Association for the Advancement of Science Fellows. She is the first AAAS Fellow from Middle Tennessee State University. Dr. Iriarte-Gross received this honor for Encouraging Women into Careers in the Chemical Sciences. She is a chemistry professor at MTSU and director of the MTSU WISTEM (Women In STEM) Center.

MWM-MN Partnering with Soledad O’Brien’s Starfish Foundation

MWM-MN is partnering with Soledad O’Brien’s Starfish Foundation to promote the 2017 PowHERful Enrichment Conference on August 26th.  The PowHERful Foundation works to help young women attend and finish college through financial aid, mentorship, and other services. Their Enrichment Conference is a day-long event focusing on educational, professional and personal development, and is free to girls 14-13.

GoIT Program and Tata Consultancy Services Hope to Expose Young Students to Tech-Related Topics

Through the goIT program, Tata Consultancy Services hopes to expose students to technology-related topics at an early age in the hope that it would trigger their interest and encourage them to explore opportunities in information technology and computer engineering. Led by TCS employees, such as Ms. Hillary McDonald and IT professionals, such as Ms. JaNelle Casson, a member of the Million Women Mentor-TX Task Force, these workshops help students understand the importance of IT as a profession and provide direct interaction with experts in emerging technologies. Texas 4-H Urban Outreach Programs presented GoIT - Houston July 31 - August 2, 2017 at Fort Bend - 4-H County Office in Rosenberg, Texas.  U. S. Congressmen Pete Olson provided the opening remarks. ELEVATE 100 - the Karnataka Government‘s Flagship Programme to identify 100 of the most innovative start-ups in the State kicked-off last month  has received an overwhelming response from 1700 start-ups across Karnataka.

The State Government in association with SheThePeople.TV will co-locate ‘The Women Entrepreneur Innovation Summit’ on August 20 at the Elevate100 Grand Finale.

The summit is aimed at supporting women tech entrepreneurs with access to mentoring and funds earmarked for women entrepreneurs. The Government will also provide necessary support in marketing, accounting and legal matters.

In Washington’s Most Diverse District, STEM Opportunities Provide New Paths to Success

Federal Way Public Schools (FWPS) is the most diverse district in the state of Washington, serving 70 percent scholars of color. Current statistics show that scholars of color and females are underrepresented in STEM fields across the country, and so FWPS is actively taking steps to provide STEM and STEAM (STEM with an emphasis on the arts) opportunities for each scholar from kindergarten through high school graduation.

On Friday, Step will hit theaters. The heartfelt documentary follows three seniors at Baltimore Leadership School For Young Women with their eyes on college and their final year as members of their high school’s step team.

Kate Lack, 2017 Miss Showgirl Finalist and STEM Student

Finalist, Kate Lack, 21, graduated from USQ with a Bachelor in Spatial Science majoring in Surveying (Hons). Kate now lives in Moranbah and works as a Graduate Surveyor with BHP. She is also the current Global Social Media Manager for Robogals. In the future, Kate hopes to continue her role as a mentor and role model for girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Maths) and continue to engage young girls in the endless opportunities STEM careers can have. Kate’s hobbies include raising chickens, reading and sewing. She was also the captain for the 2016 USQ University Games Team and captained the women’s basketball team.


Camp Introduces Girls to AI, the Modern Day ‘Industrial Revolution’

Tiny cars buzz around a classroom in the Stanford Gates Computer Science Building as eight teen girls look on, laptops in hand. These young programmers at SAILORS, the Stanford Artificial Intelligence Laboratory Outreach Summer program, are testing code for their mini self-driving cars.

These girls are part of a group of 32 females, all rising high school sophomores, who come from 10 states and five countries to be a part of the world’s only summer artificial intelligence camp for girls. Similar programs will run next year at the University of California, Berkeley, and Princeton University.


How the Girl Scouts' New CEO is Using Her Time at NASA and Apple to Promote STEM Education

What started as simply stargazing with her Girl Scouts troop as a 7-year-old in New Mexico has since turned into a career at NASA, IBM, Apple and Dell for Sylvia Acevedo. Sylvia Acevedo's mission: to ensure STEM learning is a part of every young woman's life.

SciGirls Offers Real STEM Role Models for Young Girls

Twin Cities PBS created SciGirls, a national PBS television series with an online and educational component that specifically features female experts in science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM). In each half-hour episode, middle-school-aged girls are paired with female STEM professionals, and together with cartoon mascots Izzie and Jake, they embark on a STEM mission. Every episode takes place in a different location and features new teams of students and professional scientists.


Number of Minorities, Women Taking CS is Skyrocketing Thanks to STEM Collaborations

Following implementation of a new type of computer science option last fall — AP Computer Science Principles, which puts real-world perspectives on coding — data from 2016 to 2017 shows the number of minorities taking a computer science exam in some form nearly tripled to 22,199, up from 8,283, while the number of girls taking it rose from 12,642 to 29,708.

NKY’s Women’s Initiative announces honorary committee for Annual Regional Summit on Sept. 19

nternational speaker and author Libby Gill will deliver the keynote addresses under the theme, “Igniting Bold Leadership for Established and Emerging Leaders.”

Aberdeen, Helios Fund Push for Gender Diversity

Efforta to increase gender diversity are gaining traction globally since State Street Global Advisors in March installed the Fearless Girl across from Wall Street's iconic charging bull. 

A recent study by a professor at the University of Pennsylvania suggested that, "there is no evidence available to suggest that the addition, or presence, of women on the board actually causes a change in company performance."

Recently, the International Women Society executive members led by its 60th President, Ego Boyo, graduated 85 women in different vocational skills training at its Lekki centre. It was at its 18th graduation ceremony where Funke Olaode, captured the life-changing experience and confirmed that, indeed, the IWS through its empowerment programme is not just building careers but also providing steam that is driving the nation’s economy.

Diversity Debate Divides Silicon Valley

On Saturday an unnamed male engineer published "Google's Ideological Echo Chamber," strongly suggesting the company encourage "ideological" rather than gender diversity. The author contends women don't make up 50% of the company's tech and leadership positions because of differences in their preferences and abilities, not sexism. By early Sunday, the memo had gone viral.
