How Verizon Reaches #GirlsInSTEM in Rural Communities: A Q&A with Justina Nixon-Saintil

In partnership with the National Association for Community College Entrepreneurship (NACCE), more than 300 girls across three states will learn the fundamentals of augmented reality, coding, 3D design, entrepreneurship and design thinking principles.

Following the summer program, students will continue to participate in monthly courses both in-person and virtually, to build upon what they’ve learned and complete their final augmented reality products.

SAUDI ARABIA:  Saudi STEM Female Students Won Prestigious Competition in the US

Effat University, Saudi-Arabia’s first non-profit university for women, took part at the International MATE ROV Competition held in Long Beach, California, at the end of June.
In a severe competition among 65 teams from 20 different countries, Effat’s electrical and computer engineering team won two prizes for product presentation. The first one, Best presentation, innovation, and leadership, was awarded to Malak Albagami. The other one, the Aloha Team Spirit award for best team enthusiasm, encouragement, best team T-shirts, and good team synergy.

MALTA: Will Malta Follow Through with Feminizing Politics?

Recently the Labour Party announced its plan, called LEAD, to feminise politics through the gradual increase of its women candidates for local, national and European elections. This plan includes providing training, mentoring and support to young women who wish to take the plunge into the local political sludge.

Labour may wish to start even closer home by feminising its own decision-making organs – it lags behind the Nationalist Party in having women in senior party positions. This notwithstanding, LEAD is a good idea. In focusing on long-term capacity-building it stands to make a bigger impact on the gender balance in politics than the different forms of positive discrimination that have been bandied about.

TAJIKISTAN: EBRD launches Women in Business program in Tajikistan

DUSHANBE (TCA) — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is expanding its Women in Business programme to Tajikistan, which will become the 17th country to benefit from improved financing and business advice for female entrepreneurs under the programme, the Bank said on July 28.

The Bank, which sees economic inclusion as one of the attributes of a successful modern economy, has allocated US$ 10 million to the Women in Business programme in Tajikistan. As well as access to finance, the programme will help women access the know-how they need to develop their businesses, through business advice, training courses in key entrepreneurial skills and a mentoring programme.

INDIA: IIT Madras to train 300 Micro and Marginal Women Entrepreneurs in Tamil Nadu

Chennai: Indian Institute of Technology Madras launched a new initiative on Friday, 28th July 2017, to train 300 micro and marginal women entrepreneurs in Tamil Nadu. The Institute has joined hands with CAMS Group, which is providing a funding support of about Rs. 45 lakh, and Hand-in-Hand India, a charitable trust, for this three-year project.

The program aims to provide high impact training to the women entrepreneurs by providing key inputs in different areas of business and management. This will help participants to improve their growth rates and profitability.

IRELAND: New figures reveal significant gender pay gap in Irish Government jobs

While pay rates in the civil service are fixed – meaning men and women are paid the same at each grade regardless of gender – these figures show a glass ceiling remains in terms of women getting promoted to top jobs.

If you take an average of wages from all grades then across government departments women earn about €8,000 less.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Le Moyne College this week hosted about 30 high-school girls from 11 districts for a week-long summer camp focusing on science and technology.

Independent and Catholic Schools Guide: The NASA Connection

Bridget Dwyer went away from home for the first time to learn about ways to get a lot further from home.

The Marist Sisters' College Woolwich student has just returned from the United States, specifically the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) centres in Houston, Texas and Huntsville, Alabama.

She's still wearing her space school T-shirt and a huge grin. "I would like to be an astrophysicist. Gravity, The Martian and Apollo 13 are three of my favourite movies. I want to be the one who solves problems for astronauts," she says.


U of T News - Challenges Women Face in STEM

University of Toronto students Ekaterina AnAlexandra Mogadam and Melissa Galati  spent countless lunch breaks talking about the challenges they face as women in medicine.

An and Mogadam are in the master's program and Galati is a PhD student in the Institute of Medical Science at the Faculty of Medicine. They talked about issues like how conscious women have to be of their appearance, whether they can express their femininity and whether women have to work harder to be taken seriously.


CEWiT Partners Alumni, Female Students in New Mentorship Program

While Erin Baginski studied at IU, she was frequently one of two women in her classrooms. Besides her roommate, everyone else in her computer and information systems classes was male.

She’s since become the IT director at Progressive Insurance in Cleveland. But not without her fair share of struggle.

The Center of Excellence for Women in Technology is working to solve the problem Baginski faced as a student. CEWiT will be starting its first fully-fledged e-mentor program for female students in the fall.

“We would have loved to have something like this,” Baginski said.


Danette Mitchell: Raise the Awareness of Black Women’s Political Power

On Thursday, Higher Heights Leadership Fund and the Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers University released its report: “Black Women in American Politics: 2017 Status Update.” The report is an analysis of the 2016 election which highlights key wins across the country as well as areas of underrepresentation for black women.
