MYC St. Pat's Fundraiser
THANK YOU!

On behalf of the Milford Youth Commission and staff, we would like to thank everyone who attended, donated, supported, and volunteered to make the seventh annual St. Pat's Fundraiser successful, raising $6,000 for Youth Center programs! The event was held on Saturday, March 18, 2017 and was the first fundraiser at the newly renovated Youth Center! The event included a cash bar, music, raffles, community awards, youth art auction, corn hole, appetizers and a special dance performance by one of our rental groups "Danza Intercultural Muskuk Nan."

We also announced our 2017 Community Appreciation Awards. Mike Volpe, accepted the Community Appreciation Award on behalf of ANP Bellingham. Mike Volpe and ANP Bellingham were an easy selection as the recipient of this award, due to the years of their dedication to the Center. Mike was responsible for helping to coordinate the donation of a boiler, valued at over $80,000, a landscaping project, with the collaboration of Consigli Construction and Nydem Landscaping, valued at over $30,000 and numerous monetary donations towards our After School and Holiday giving program.

Our second 2017 Community Appreciation Award was given to the Milford Girls Softball League. Before the renovation, members of Milford Girls Softball league and Board would utilize our cages but always looked for ways to help the Center. Whether it was donating the cages themselves, fixing and installing lighting in the basement and the gym, taking down the storage closets so we could put up batting cages back up in the newly renovated Center, painted walls, or donated a $6,500 floor machine - there is nothing this group won't do to help support us! Board members Paul Bonvino, Mike Bonina, Paul Pellegrini, Peter Tredeau, Joe Douglas and Mike Swain accepted the award at the event!

We are thankful for these long-lasting relationships that have helped the Center live up to its mission in providing a safe environment that promotes self-esteem, builds character, and fosters the notion of community and the importance of respecting and serving others. We would like to thank every individual, organization and/or businesses that contributed to this fundraiser: Trinity Episcopal Church, Murray Law Office, Milford Braces PC, Milford girls softball league, Hoop Crew, LLC, Old Time Auto Sales, ANP Bellingham/Dynegy Power, Pizza Palace, Walsh Brother Inc. (Mike Gentile), Gold's Gym, Bon Tempo Family, E-Z Way Car Wash, Platinum Physical Therapy, Relaxation Creation, Dogfish Head Brewery, Teachers Driving Academy, McDonalds, SportsClips, Shannon Leigh Photography, Oliva's Market, Catering & Gourmet Gifts, Mark Berman, Accurate Auto Care, Midtown Family Fitness,John Smith Sports Center, Imperial Cars, Paul Johnson, Nikki Marie, Danielle Marie, Helena Passamonti, Jessica Friswell, Breanna Claro JP Liquors, Tent Connection, Chris and Gary's Tent Rental, Milford Police Department, Signs Plus, BJ's Wholesale Club of Franklin, Hoop Crew LLC., Area Glass Co., Afonso Real Estate Inc., Linda Farricy and Ron Auger! Thank you to Milford Town Crier, Myfm 101.3 and Milford TV for helping us promote the fundraiser. We would lastly like to thank our amazing staff, board members and volunteers who helped with the planning, set up & clean up!

MYC After School Program Updates!

Here we are in the month of April!! Spring has sprung! Time flies here at the Youth Center. We are so busy with all of our after-school programs. As a reminder, all participants must be a Milford resident and/or attend Milford Schools, to fill out a registration form to be a member (8-18 yr olds) and participate in programming.

The gym, game room and lounge are open for free use every day and we have at least three structured programs daily for April. We will continue to run homework room, nutrition, career and college advising (where we offer extended guidance counseling for teens who want help with their FAFSA, college application, resumes, and job applications), crafts, JAG (the Juvenile Advocacy Group), Sewing, and Pokémon club. In addition to our core programming we will also be adding a few new programs for the month of April. New programs include; gardening (which Blackstone Valley Technical High School has agreed to work with us to build garden boxes in the back of the Youth Center), Taste Exploration (a chance for youth to try new foods), and a walking club where youth can enjoy guided strolls down the bike path. For full calendar and times, click here. We are always open to new ideas and search for volunteers who would like to run a program or help monitor. Contact Christine Daddario, [email protected], 508-473-1756 if you would like to volunteer.

As a reminder, all participants must be a Milford resident and/or attend Milford Schools, to fill out a registration form to become a member. Once this form is returned to the Center, the member will be provided with a key tag and ID number. This will be how the Youth Center staff will track attendance. Therefore, all members are required to bring in their key tag in order to enter the facility. If key tag is lost, the Center will charge $1.00 for replacement. You can find out all up-to-date info at our website.

Thank you Stacy Middle School and Woodland Elementary for allowing us to come in to do outreach!

The Youth Center would like to extend a very appreciative thank you to the following people who donated items this month to the Center:
  • Milford Fire Department:  for allowing us to come over with one of our After School members who aspires to become a fireman! Three Milford Firefighters sat down with our member to give him advice and allowed him to ask questions on the steps of becoming a firefighter as part of our new Career/College Guidance program.
  • The Milford Highway Dept. for helping Youth Center staff  picking up turf for our batting cages and also for helping us get our Heavy Bag Boxing Stand back into the building! Unfortunately after the renovation we were unable to get it back into the building. The Highway Department were able to remove the legs and then weld it back together for us!
  • Consigli Construction Co. for inviting us to be a part of their volunteer showcase on March 24, 2017!
  • BVT cosmetology shop for coming in to show the kids how to apply makeup the correct way. They had so much fun!

MYC After School Youth  Take Part in a Mock Emergency Readiness Program

Recent events have taught us that all towns and cities need to be ready for anything, including natural disasters, terrorism, and disease. In light of this, the Worcester Regional Medical Reserve Corps has implemented a Disaster Preparedness Program. The MRC is comprised of a group of committed volunteers, with or without medical backgrounds, who keep their communities safe by responding to public health emergencies. This Disaster Preparedness Program was made possible by a federal grant and MRC volunteers were able to bring this program to the children of the Milford Youth Center. Youth were led in a discussion of what to do in an emergency and then participated in a fun "zombie survival game" that outlined the elements of survival in an emergency situation. Youth were also instructed to take home materials to family members and come up with strategic plans for emergencies. Upon completion, the kids were given survival backpacks, which included things like emergency blankets, MRE's, purified water, flashlights, a first aid kit, glow sticks, emergency handbooks, and many other life prolonging gear. As an incentive, when youth finish completing emergency materials with their families and bring them back to the MYC they will also receive an emergency tent to add to their survival backpack. This was such a fun and unique event that the kids loved. We were fortunate to be able to offer this realistic and practical training to our youth. If you would like more information about this program, contact Mary Watson: [email protected]
MYC Fashion Show Info!
We are happy to announce the date of our 7th annual "Dressed Up, Not Messed Up" Fashion Show! The show will take place on Saturday, June 10th. Through this event we plan to raise awareness about underage drinking and help teens become better informed about the dangers of alcohol so they can make healthy decisions throughout life. We also hope this event will increase youth self-esteem and attitudes toward their body image! This will also be our first fashion show at the newly renovated Youth Center!!!

An information session and sign-ups will take place on Wednesday, April 26th at 6:30 pm at the Milford Youth Center. This is a mandatory meeting that all parents/guardians and participants must attend! TJ Maxx of Milford will be providing outfits for the show and BVT cosmetology and local businesses will be providing hair and makeup. At this meeting all participants will sign up for time slots to try on outfits and appointments for hair and makeup. Youth will also need a permission form and photo release, which will be done during the meeting. We hope to see you there. This event is always a ton of fun and a big success!

Milford Youth Center (MYC) mission  is to provide a safe environment that promotes self esteem, builds character, and fosters the notion of community and the importance of respecting and serving others. For more information, click here .

Juvenile Advocacy Group (JAG) mission is to work with its community partners to bring resources together to prevent substance abuse and address other emerging needs in the community. The Massachusetts communities included in JAG's service area are the towns of Milford, Bellingham and Hopedale. Through JAG's programs and services youth and their families are able to gain the information and resources to help live and lead healthier lives.

The  MYC & JAG work together to provide resources and opportunities for youth to make healthy decisions. The MYC & JAG have worked to provide local youth with the necessary activities and events that help them develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally through their childhood years. By providing Milford youth with these types of programs and a safe environment during the after school hours and during our monthly events, we hope to address adolescent risk factors as well as promoting the partnership among community members to ensure a comprehensive vision and plan for the health of the youth in the town of Milford.
