3rd Annual Youth Fashion Show a Success! 

The Juvenile Advocacy Group (JAG) in affiliation with the Milford Youth Center, hosted their 3rd teen fashion show titled "Get Dressed Up, Not Messed Up!" on February 12th.    

The Fashion show is aimed at raising awareness about underage drinking and helping teens make healthy decisions throughout their lives. This was our largest show to date and featured over 62 children.

The children who participate are really incredible. They pick out all their own outfits, hair and makeup styles and then courageously walk the blue carpet in front of an audience. It is really special to see.

TJ Maxx of Milford provides the clothing and hair and makeup are done by Paul Mitchell School in Rhode Island. The smiles on their faces, as they walked down runway, always leaves a lasting impression on everyone.

The next JAG meeting will be a three hour training on Developmental Assets. The meeting will be Wednesday, March 2nd from 8:00-11:00 AM at the Milford Police Department. 

2nd Annual MYC St. Pat's Dinner/Dance Fundraiser! 

Join us for the 2nd Annual Milford Youth Center St. Pat's Dinner/Dance Fundraiser on Saturday, March 12th from 6:00pm- midnight!    

The event will be catered by Oliva's and DJ Ron Auger will be providing music and entertainment. Tickets are $35.00 per person (Limited availability). Reserving tables of 8 accepted. All proceeds support the many programs of the Milford Youth Center.

After a successful first "Find Yourself Friday" youth event, the JAG Youth Council and Milford Youth Center will host their second event on Friday, March 25th from 7-10 pm.        

This month the youth have chosen to hold a dance and collect old cell phones for the Cell Phones for Soldiers recycling program.  Each month the youth discuss and choose an issue they would like to address and an organization that they would like to benefit from the event. The event will include a DJ, snacks and an area to watch WALL-E!

According to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, electronic waste (e-waste) is accumulating almost three times faster than ordinary household trash. Youth from the Youth Council will research this topic and would like all who attend the dance to bring an old cell phone to recycle. Cell Phones for Soldiers collects old cell phones, which are then sent to ReCellular, which pays Cell Phones for Soldiers for each donated phone - enough to provide an hour of talk time to our soldiers abroad.

Funding for "Find Yourself Fridays" is supported by the United Way of Tri-County Youth Venture Program and CHNA-6.

The Building Strong Families poll generated by Search Institute, found that parents often "go it alone." They do not regularly seek support from family, friends, or community resources. However, research shows that having a network of support helps to strengthen families, and is associated with positive outcomes for both parents and children. Searchinstitute.com

When was the last time you clicked on the internet to seek information about teen issues or sex education?  Are you overwhelmed trying to build a strong family when there is a 'divide' of beliefs on the use of texting, Facebook and the fear of underage substance abuse? According to a Harris Interactive Poll, the number of adults using the Internet to find health-related information leaped from 154 million in 2009, to 175 million in 2010.  Unfortunately, 68% didn't access the internet and those that did probably didn't have time to read about reducing stress or information about bullying and teen trends.

Community Impact consultants Lisa Vasile, MSRN, ANP-C, Amanda Ayers, MPH and Amy Leone, MS,MA, LMHC have been working in the field of health for 40 years combined. These three career women are strong community leaders, parents and wives. They are dedicated to enabling changes in the families of today and the communities in which they live. They have collaborated together to develop the "Impacting Your Life" program, which offers adults and teens a way to obtain the support and affirmations needed on teen issues and empowering health to impact their lives.  This program offers 90 minute seminars in private homes or professional settings which will inform, inspire and offer guidance to guests. The cost of the seminars is only $20.00 per person with an 8 guest minimum.  

The Milford Youth Center would like to thank Consigli Construction for their overwhelming generoisity in donating new, energy efficient windows to the Youth Center- a project that could easily have cost $90,000 to $100,000.

This year the building will be 100 years old. As you can imagine it is hard to raise funds to support not only all the activities but especially the maintenance and utilities. One point of concern has been the 100 year old windows, which were not energy efficient and have more than served their use.

Anthony and Matthew Consigli, as well as the whole Consigli Family, have always been supportive of their home town of Milford. Not only here at the Youth Center, but for many, many other worthwhile causes. Mark Sanchioni, brother of Director Jim Sanchioni and an employee of Consigli Construction, heard about what Anthony had done and immediately volunteered his own time, at no cost, on weekends to install the new windows.  Once the ball started rolling other employees of Consigli Construction jumped in to help Mark with the job.  Bill Impey, Jon Potter, Jeff Scannell, John Laperle, Bob Bissanti along with Jim Sanchioni.

Without the support of companies such as Consigli Construction as well as the local government, citizens of Milford, local businesses and the United Way of Tri-County, we would never be able to accomplish what we do.
