MYC After School Program Updates!

Happy New Year and welcome to the month of January for our After School program! One of our most exciting new programs this month was the Futsal soccer program. The Milford Youth Center has partnered with   DreamTeam FCA  to provide Futsal Training to our after-school offerings.  Young aspiring players may sign up for this training to learn the techniques involved to play this fast paced game. Futsal is a version of soccer that is played on a gym floor with a heavier ball. The game develops skill with the ball and quick thinking as time and space is limited.  DreamTeam FCA has over the past 4 years developed top players who have advanced to many of New England's top clubs including the Revolution academy. Led by the New England Revolution's former General Manager Craig Tornberg, the program puts player development at the forefront of the program. Enlisting top coaches, many current pro players, the program is fun and informative.  Players may sign up at the Milford Youth Center on a first come first serve basis, every Monday and Wednesday during the After School program!

Also, new in December was sewing, which seems like it will grow in January. For the new year we will be adding a program called Kidz Roomz on Mondays from 3-5. This program will open up two rooms on the upper level of the Youth Center for the younger youth, ages 8-11. Check out our regular schedule to see an entire list of programming here

A ll participant  s must be a Milford resident and/or attend Milford Schools, to fill out a   registration form   to be a member. Once this form is returned to the Center, the member will be provided with a key tag and ID number. This will be how the Youth Center staff will track attendance. Therefore, all members are required to bring in their key tag in order to enter the facility. If key tag is lost, the Center will charge $1.00 for replacement  . You can find out all up-to-date info at our website.

Thank you Stacy Middle School and Woodland Elementary for allowing us to come in to do outreach!

MYC Holiday Pizza Party!

The Milford Youth Center was able to provide a gift this Holiday season to 100 After-School members due to such amazing generosity from the community! We would first like to thank Pizza Chef of Milford for their generosity in hosting our annual Holiday Pizza Party on December 21st and providing all the pizza and drinks for the kids! We would like to send a big thank you to the United Way of Tri-County, Barbara LaGrenade, and their "Hope for the Holidays" program for sponsoring 35 kids this year! We would also like to thank Waters Corporation, and especially Debbie Moreau, Senior Administrative Assistant and Ken Fountain, Senior Director of Scientific Operations for organizing a collection for 23 After Schools members. We would also to thank the Milford Town Hall, and especially Kara Geromini, for organizing a collection that helped out over 20 members!

Finally, thank you to some individuals who sponsored children, including the Brogiolis, Beth Tamagni Fraunfelter and some unanimous donors! Another huge thank you goes out to an anonymous resident of Milford for donating a $500 gift card to the Center to allow us to purchase more presents for kids in need this Holiday season!!!

Thank you also to Woodland Elementary for donating their left-over gifts to the Center to help out, again, even more kids! We would also like to thank all of our staff and volunteers who attended and helped us out at the event!

Nutrition Updates!

For the month of December the Youth Center kids had a blast making "Grinch Santas", pie crusts, and cookies for Santa. We also learned that eating fruits and veggies of all colors of the rainbow has a lot of benefits and that strawberries and coconut oil can whiten your teeth; which the kids were pretty excited about. For the new year and the month of January we will be concentrating solely on fruits and vegetables; making plant based appetizers and snacks.

Crafty Happenings!

Crafts is always a busy class. Sticking with the holiday theme we made snow globes, snowman frames, and ornaments for the tree. The kids also made some amazing snowflakes that were displayed around the Center. Another exciting update is our sewing class. We started with making pillows and if interest rises we hope to purchase sewing machines in the future.

They are very excited about their opportunity to work with Milford TV. Its an amazing chance to learn a new skill and potentially a new trade. The  MYC & JAG work together to provide resources and opportunities for youth to make healthy decisions. The MYC & JAG have worked to provide local youth with the necessary activities and events that help them develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally through their childhood years. By providing Milford youth with these types of programs and a safe environment during the after school hours and during our monthly events, we hope to address adolescent risk factors as well as promoting the partnership among community members to ensure a comprehensive vision and plan for the health of the youth in the town of Milford.
