JAG Youth Council participate in Hunger Banquet and CROP Hunger Walk!
|
At the last JAG Youth Council meeting the youth participated in an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet where our youth randomly drew tickets that assigned them to different income levels, based on the latest statistics about the number of people living in poverty. Depending on where they sit, some received a filling dinner, while others ate a simple meal or shared sparse portions of rice and water. While not all guests leave with full stomachs, many gain a new perspective on the root causes of hunger and poverty-and will feel motivated to do something to help.
The youth participated in this in preparation for the CROP Hunger Walk in which they walked in on October 1st. Ten members of JAG raised money for the cause and walked.
The 10K CROP Walk for Hunger was very successful this year with over 115 walkers participating. There were 12 Teams that represented many area organizations, businesses, schools & churches. The Milford Daily Bread Food Pantry and the Trinity Church Meal Program, both whom are benefactors of this event, had a Team of walkers. Donations are still coming in and current estimates have us raising over $7,500. Steve Kearley would like to thank everyone who walked and express that "we couldn't have done it without you all."

What Kids Need: The Building Blocks for Children and Youth
|
What are Developmental Assets?
This year the Juvenile Advocacy Group and the JAG Youth Council will focus their community efforts on Developmental Assets. The Developmental Assets are 40 common sense, positive experiences and qualities that help influence choices young people make and help them become caring, responsible, successful adults. Because of its basis in youth development, resiliency, and prevention research and its proven effectiveness, the Developmental Assets framework has become one of the most widely used approach to positive youth development in the United States. Read the list of assets here.
How to get started building assets:
There are many ways you can start building assets for the children and youth around you, whether they're in your family, school, or community. This year JAG will work with the search institute in promotion of our marketing campaign "Where do I get that asset?" as well as monthly articles regarding developmental assets including resources you can use to create a better world for the kids in Milford. These monthly assets will also be an aspect of the JAG youth council's Find Yourself Friday events throughout the year.
Amy Leone will be writing a monthly article in Milford PATCH discussing how individuals can build assets among their families, friends and community.
If you are interested in getting involved please feel free to contact Amy Leone at communityimpactinc@gmail.com or go to www.jagnetwork.org

Building a Competent School Community for Suicide Prevention
|
Suicide is the third leading cause of death for adolescents nationally and in the state of Massachusetts. While any suicide is complex, there are risk factors and warning signs that can make it easier to identify at-risk youth. Schools have an especially important role to play in this process. A competent school community for suicide prevention that can identify, respond to and treat at-risk youth is not a new concept, but it remains one of the most effective. There are also effective, proactive ways for community members to come together to collaborate on creating competent prevention programs.
