New MYC Laundromat Program!

The Youth Center will now be offering a program called "MYC Laundromat" which will give youth the chance to do their laundry while they attend the after-school program. We would like to thank The Wheelock Family for donating brand new machines from Frank's Appliance. We would also like to thank Franks for offering a discount on the price of the machines. The Wheelocks were inspired to initiate this program due to the fact that school administration began to notice absenteeism was directly correlated to whether or not youth had clean clothes. The program will take place on Mondays from 2-6 pm and everything will be provided for the entire process; detergent, guidance on how to use the machines and laundry baskets. Youth will also be able to use the machines at any time by asking a staff member for assistance. This program would not be possible also with out the plumbing work, which was donated by All-Temp Systems Mechanical! Both donations amount to a combined donation of $4,000! Also, thank you to the many families who have donated laundry detergent and other supplies over the last month!
MYC Youth Council Updates!

The MYC Youth Council is blooming into spring! During the first couple of meetings, youth council members discussed spring events, volunteer opportunities and studio time at Milford TV. In addition, some members went to Milford TV over Spring Break to edit footage from the Milford Youth Center March Madness Tournament as well as the PhotoVoice reception in addition to general footage from programs! The youth council members interviewed their peers who participate in youth center programs and received great responses! The youth council members also had another training conversation with Cheylsea Federle from New Hope. This session's focus was Biological Sex, Gender and Healthy Masculinity. During the meeting, Cheylsea Federle, who holds a Master's in Gender Studies, discussed and defined different gender expressions and identities in addition to explaining the science behind people who are born with different chromosomal structures resulting in them being biologically female, male or intersex. Cheylsea was really helpful with answering questions.
The youth feel they have learned a lot from these few New Hope sessions and are excited for whatever is next. They will be deciding on another topic to learn about soon! Finally, thank you, Lisa White, for joining the MYC Youth Council at the end of the month to discuss the importance of mindfulness! The youth council members thoroughly enjoyed the talk. During the discussion, Lisa showed the members some breathing exercises and provided them with some proven benefits of wholesome breathing and mindfulness!Look out for the MYC Youth Council in May!

United Way of Tri-County Recognizes
Two MYC Volunteers!

We are ecstatic to announce that the  United Way of Tri-County recognized a youth member and a volunteer from the Youth Center at their annual "Everyday Heroes" recognition breakfast held on Thursday, April 5th at the Framingham Sheraton Hotel. Darlene Dulude was a finalist for the Volunteer of the Year Award and Sebastian Soares was a finalist for the Youth Volunteer of the Year Award for the MetroWest/495 Corridor!

We nominated Darlene because she truly has become such a vital member of our Program and has become somewhat of a "Mother Hen' to all of our staff members here at the Center. We got to know Darlene slowly at first through our relationship with her husband, John, who volunteered at the Center and was former recipient of this award! As a result of this, Darlene decided to see if she would have the same passion towards the Center, like her husband. What started at first as a one hour volunteer shift each week has grown into multiple volunteer roles and contributions.
Darlene currently volunteers 3 hours each week to assist our Youth Center staff for our free after school programs that include: Arts & Crafts, Nutrition and sewing.  These are some of our most popular programs during the After School program and my staff quite frankly would not be able to allow as many kids in the program without her assistance!
Darlene also volunteers at all of our monthly events and annual fundraisers. Darlene is also researching healthy recipes for nutrition and fun craft ideas on Pinterest to help with program ideas. She is always taking pictures for us and then spending the days she is not volunteering at the Center making collages of the different programs for us to then share on our MYC social media pages, which then in turn helps promote our programs and leverage more support from the community and increase in attendance. Darlene also volunteers during the Milford Summer Food Service Program, which the Youth Center was one of the three areas in town that youth and their families could come in for a free lunch. Darlene has volunteered with us for the last two years now and put in over 300 hours each year through the programs and events she assists us with! Due to this dedication and her passion towards helping the Center, we believe Darlene was the perfect candidate for this award!

Sebastian Soares has impacted the Milford Youth Center immensely. He inspires every person he meets. He is a member of the MYC Youth Council, a volunteer group of youth that meets every Wednesday at 4:00pm. Sebastian has volunteered at a variety of events with the group. He has also put time and effort into making nametags for the group voluntarily. Sebastian is always ready to help with a smile on his face. He is kind and courteous even if others are not. That is impressive in itself, but what is even more impressive is that Sebastian maintains volunteerism and positivity even through consistent pain. A few years ago, Sebastian was diagnosed with Small Fiber Neuropathy. It is a disease categorized by sharp, consistent pain in his extremities and in some cases including his own, his entire body. This condition he has leaves him feeling physically uncomfortable but his great attitude and generosity persists. During one outdoor event, Sebastian was beginning to feel very hot. Feeling hot is a symptom of his condition. Instead of sitting back and taking a breather, Sebastian insisted he continue his volunteerism but with his shoes off in order to cool down. Another extraordinary display of Sebastian's determination and strength was when he was hospitalized.  While Sebastian was hospitalized, he insisted upon joining the youth council meeting via FaceTime or video chat.
His peers were truly inspired and moved by his devotion. In addition, on the same day he was released from the hospital, he had to attend his grandfather's funeral service. Right after being discharged from the hospital and attending his grandfather's funeral service, he made his way to the Milford Youth Center to support his peers at the Find Yourself Friday youth event. He was ready to help though he was not feeling his best. Sebastian has demonstrated the true meaning of service. He is willing to go out of his own way to help others around him. We are so grateful for Sebastian at the center! For more about Sebastian and his battle with Erythromelalgia (EM), click on this HuffPost article that he was featured in. For the video of his recognition, click here.

Both Darlene and Sebastian have done so much to help the Youth Center and the community! We are so grateful to the United Way of Tri-Country for recognizing Darlene and Sebastian for their hard work! Congrats!

MYC Kid's Play Group 0-5!

Our MYC Kid's Play Group is growing each week!  This is a children's play group for parents and/or guardians to bring their kids to play, craft and socialize! The groups will run every  Tuesday afternoon from 12:30 pm to 2:00 PM.

Each session will include activities such as circle time, free play, crafts, snack, story time and clean up! There is a requested donation of $5 per family per session, so the MYC can continue and expand groups and programming. Come on down and bring your child to run and play while adults socialize and meet other families in the community!
New Program, PhotoVoice, was a Hit!

We want to say thank you to David Sebastian from Greenhouse Graphics and Tempo on Framingham. For eight weeks Dave ran a program called PhotoVoice. PhotoVoice is an eight week intro to photojournalism and is funded through the Department of Mental Health. Photojournalism is the art of telling a story with a picture. Youth met once a week for seven weeks for an hour and a half. The first hour they discussed photos that told a story for them, and for the next half hour the youth ate pizza and socialized! On Thursday, March 29th, we held the Artist's Reception. The youth's photo was printed in large format(13"x19") and they were able to present their photo with a narrative to a group of peers, friends, and family. This was an amazing program and we were so excited to see it come to fruition with the artwork of all the young adults who participated.

Milford Youth Center (MYC) mission  is to provide a safe environment that promotes self esteem, builds character, and fosters the notion of community and the importance of respecting and serving others. For more information, click here .

The  MYC  works together with other community organizations to provide resources and opportunities for youth to make healthy decisions. The MYC works to provide local youth with the necessary activities and events that help them develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally through their childhood years. By providing Milford youth with these types of programs and a safe environment during the after school hours and during our monthly events, we hope to address adolescent risk factors as well as promoting the partnership among community members to ensure a comprehensive vision and plan for the health of the youth in the town of Milford.
