After School Program - October 2017!

The month of September has flown by for us here at the youth center. We've been having so much fun, and surprisingly, sun! As we warmly enter into fall and the month of October, we have some new programming and updates to share with you.

Open Gym- Open gym is a non-structured program where youth are allowed free play and choice of activities in the gym as well as the rest of the youth center (lounge and game room).

Homework Help- This month we will be changing the time of our homework help from 2:00 to 3:00. This will make it more available for kids coming from Woodland schools and also give kids a chance to take a break right after school before they start on their homework. We also have a free tutor available. Please email us if you are interested to set up an appointment.
  • Sewing- Sewing will be starting on October 3rd. This class will be led by Lisa White, Christine Daddario, and Darlene Dulude. The kids will be progressing to using sewing machines this year, which we are pretty excited about.
  • CrossFit- CrossFit is going strong into October. CrossFit is run by Marc Pitts from CrossFit Never Doubt in Milford. CrossFit is constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. All CrossFit workouts are based on functional movements, and these movements reflect the best aspects of gymnastics, weightlifting, running, rowing and more. Marc tailors all his classes to fit the needs of our youth here at the center.

  • Fishing- We will have a new volunteer, Bob Gilmore, who is a Mass Wildlife trainer, "Let's Go Fishing" instructor. He will be assisting with the fishing class. which will take place at the Milford pond. This is a fun class of getting to know how to use a fishing pole and bait a hook. It will be a catch and release class.
  • Career and College Advising- This class is led by our Program Coordinator, Christine Daddario. For youth ages 14 and up who would like to start working or need help applying to colleges. The majority of work focuses on resume building, job searching, college applications and how to fill out a FAFSA.
  • Crafts- Crafts is also led by Christine Daddario. The class is all about fun and creativity, and a lot of experimenting from Pinterest. We use a lot of up-cycled materials so youth learn about re-using and the benefits is has to the environment.
  • MYC Youth Council- We transitioned from JAG into our very own MYC Youth council which is proving to be very popular this year. The kids are in the process of nominating leadership for the group and we have lots of applications for president, vice president, treasurer, and social media coordinator.

Nutrition- Led by Christine Daddario, who has a BS in Nutrition. The class will focus on making easy and fun recipes as well as tasting new foods. Youth will also be shown the importance of healthy eating through modeling and will be encouraged to make behavior changes through discussion and staff guidance.

Science Club- Led by Victoria Williams, the science club will be a place where youth can go to learn, talk, and experiment with all things science. From discussions to watching experiments, as well as making their own, the science club is a fun and exciting spot for any youth interested in science.

Milford Youth Center (MYC) mission  is to provide a safe environment that promotes self esteem, builds character, and fosters the notion of community and the importance of respecting and serving others. For more information, click here .

The  MYC  works together with other community organizations to provide resources and opportunities for youth to make healthy decisions. The MYC works to provide local youth with the necessary activities and events that help them develop physically, mentally, socially and emotionally through their childhood years. By providing Milford youth with these types of programs and a safe environment during the after school hours and during our monthly events, we hope to address adolescent risk factors as well as promoting the partnership among community members to ensure a comprehensive vision and plan for the health of the youth in the town of Milford.
