MaGrann Program Manager Rebecca Mellino, currently serves on the Board of Green Columbus , a non-profit organization that has engaged with the central Ohio community to contribute more than 100,000 hours of green citizen service to date. Green Columbus has organized Columbus’ Earth Day celebration and service activities since 2007.

Check out the highlights of an interview with Rebecca below and read the full interview here .

How long have you been involved with Green Columbus, and in what capacities?
I started attending Green Columbus’s Green Drinks happy hours in 2015 and was voted onto the Board of Green Columbus in July 2017.

Why did you join the organization?
I joined Green Columbus as a way to network with the sustainability community in Columbus. The happy hour events host guest speakers who talk about Green focused work that they are doing in Columbus or around Ohio. Past speakers have discussed topics such as Smart Columbus, homesteading, community gardening, Tree Stewardship, and beekeeping.

What does Green Columbus do and plan to do for the community?
Green Columbus hosts the city’s annual Earth Day Celebration, the largest volunteer-led Earth Day service effort in the US. This includes a week of on-site volunteer opportunities leading up to the annual Celebration downtown.

It has been a very fulfilling and uplifting experience to work with people who have the share my values on taking care of our environment. An added benefit of all of this work being local is enjoying cleaner and healthier neighborhoods and parks.

Also in Ohio...
Our Program Manager Zac Writesel celebrated the 50th Anniversary of the Fair Housing Act with Habitat for Humanity of Ohio on April 11, along with AEP Ohio's Jim Miller and Dave Tabata. Habitat for Humanity Ohio framed a Habitat for Humanity home on the grounds of the Ohio Statehouse along with members and staff of the Ohio legislature, sponsors and special guests. Great work, all!
