The Hunter Residence is a single attached home in the Philadelphia suburbs that was recently certified LEED Gold with one of the lowest HERS scores MaGrann Associates has ever rated at -23. "This is an extraordinary home, even for us at MaGrann where all new construction projects are high performance," said Jon Jensen, MaGrann's Director of Sustainability. From the bones of a SIP Envelope and the thoughtful design by Re:Vision Architecture, the home resists the daily swings in temperature through its Passive features.

On top of those basics, additional features include active solar thermal systems which provide heat for both domestic hot water and space heating, a radiant floor distribution system which directly harvests heat from the sun and stores it for later use - moving about the home via actual liquid, and a ground-source heat pump that transfers heat stored inside the earth to make up any remaining heat demand (and, in the summer, provides efficient, quiet cooling!)

The residence boasts a high quality indoor environment with abundant natural light, low toxicity materials like sealed concrete floors and a balanced heat recovery ventilation system.

On the LEED Homes Checklist, the Hunter Residence was awarded 36 of the possible 38 points in the Energy & Atmosphere category due to their impressive HERS score. This, and high performance in all other categories, earned the residence LEED Gold certification in February 2015.

AEP Ohio and Columbia Gas of Ohio has won a 2015 ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year award for the EfficiencyCrafted New Homes program administered by MaGrann. The award is the highest ENERGY STAR recognition, given annually by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This is the fourth consecutive year that AEP Ohio and Columbia Gas of Ohio have received the ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year Award, which allows them the distinction of Sustained Excellence.

The EfficiencyCrafted program provides support for builders to use advanced construction practices to meet a higher standard of energy performance, as measured by the Home Energy Ratings System (HERS) Index and the ENERGY STAR Certified Homes Program. It was introduced in 2010, and since then, over 7,500 home have been built with more than 110 participating builders. Over half of these homes received the ENERGY STAR Certified Homes label.

AEP and Columbia Gas also received a 2015 ENERGY STAR Certified Market Leader Award, which is awarded to partners who have made important contributions to energy-efficient construction and environmental protection by building or verifying an outstanding number of ENERGY STAR certified homes, or by sponsoring a local program that supports these activities during the previous year.

"We are very proud to be working with two great utilities. AEP Ohio and Columbia Gas of Ohio have a great service in EfficiencyCrafted and we are happy to be their partner," said MaGrann President, Rich Selverian.

MaGrann Associates would like to congratulate the Pennsylvania Apartment Association (PAA) on their successful Trade Show & Education Conference in Valley Forge, PA last month, as well as the New Jersey Builders Association (NJBA) for the impressive 66th Annual Atlantic Builders Convention in Atlantic City. Both events were a tremendous success and a great indication of progress in green building.

Over 1600 Multifamily industry professionals attended the PAA Trade Show on March 25th at the Valley Forge Casino Resort. In addition to a full day of trade show floor, education sessions were available for attendees. Sessions included "Multi-generational Leasing," "Hot Legal Topics in the Multifamily Housing Industry," and "Maintenance and the Happy Resident". After the exhibit hall closed, the PAA hosted a Customer Appreciation Party in the casino. MaGrann Associates was pleased to exhibit for the fourth consecutive year and connect with vendors and contractors who serve apartment communities in and around the Philadelphia Metropolitan region.

If you are interested in attending or exhibiting at next year's show in May of 2016, let us know!

The Atlantic Builders Convention March 24-26 brought approximately 6,800 attendees together at the Atlantic City Convention Center for two full days of educational sessions and a trade show floor of hundreds of building-related companies. Builders, contractors and remodelers from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, New York, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC attended the three-day event. MaGrann Associates is a long-time exhibitor and was pleased to serve on a panel this year. Vice President of Technical Services Doug McCleery spoke about the Uniform Construction Code Update, a topic for which he received an award earlier that week (see MaGrann News). MaGrann Associates also hosted a cocktail party during which a new business offering was revealed: the eGuarantee for Homes. See below for more information on this new service.

BIA

On April 23, MaGrann Associates teamed up with the Building Industry Association of Philadelphia (BIA) to kick off a two-part program that addresses the ENERGY STAR Homes program. Part 1 was entitled "The Green Edge with Suzanne Shelton & Larry Levine". It was held at the Philadelphia Navy Yard and included networking and

MaGrann's Mark MaGrann and Laila Reilly with Logan Welde, Attorney at the Clean Air Council (left to right) at "The Green Edge"

an informative panel featuring Shelton, CEO of The Shelton Group, and Levine, Senior Attorney for the National Resource Defense Council (NRDC).

Shelton, a nationally renowned market researcher in the energy and sustainability field, shared findings of a one-year market analysis on local consumer reaction to energy efficiency. Attendees discussed perceptions, trends, habits and learned how to properly market ENERGY STAR Homes and green products/technologies locally.

Levine discussed the environmental and economic intersections of green stormwater infrastructure that affect commercial and mixed use properties. He shared local case studies that showcase market advantages for commercial corridors leveraging smart green stormwater measures.

Part 2 of the program will take place today, April 30th, from noon until 1:30 at 2300 Market Street in Philadelphia. This session is entitled "Pushing the Envelope with ENERGY STAR Homes Technical Workshop". This "Lunch and Learn" workshop will focus on technical training for builders, general contractors, HVAC contractors and architects to achieve ENERGY STAR Homes Certification. With the recently expanded PECO & PGW rebate programs, financial rebates are now offered to builders meeting ENERGY STAR Homes Certification. Brian Stanfill, Operations Manager of New Construction at MaGrann Associates will address challenges, recommendations, program requirements and will be available to answer questions related to costs compared to code built homes. If you are interested in learning how to take advantage of this bottom line strategy, and in building a high quality, efficient, healthy ENERGY STAR home, please contact Laila Reilly at 215-280-8524 or [email protected]
