Another for the Record Books!
Giant puppets helped create a festive mood at the end of conference party held at the CT Science Center.
The national conference in Hartford wasn't like any we've ever had. Not only did we kick off the event with a keynote address by 17 year old Adora Svitak and four other local high school students, over 200 parents attended the conference for the first time. We played like kids at the CT Science Center, observed the 60th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, recognized magnet school excellence through our awards program, and hosted workshops in magnet schools across the region. Everyone will remember the student performances featuring drumming, rapping, dancing, string instruments, ukuleles, scenes from the Wizard of Oz, and much, much more!

If you enjoyed the Hartford conference, just wait to see what we have planned for 2015 in Raleigh, NC (April 23-26). The home of Bluegrass, great North Carolina BBQ, and some of the best magnet schools you will ever see.
Adora Svitak leads a discussion on the power of listening to student voices to enhance learning.

Not only is Wake County home to the 2014 Simpson Award winner, Combs Leadership Academy, but a district long known for promoting equity and diversity through their district magnet schoolsWe will celebrate their legacy by recognizing alumni from across the nation who have attended magnet schools, as well as learn from their model of inclusive Gifted & Talented academic magnets.

On behalf of everyone at MSA, we want to thank everyone who made MSA Hartford 2014 a fantastic success!

A.B. Combs Wins Simpson Award
A.B. Combs Principal, Muriel Summers Accepts the Donald R. Simpson Award during the 32nd National Conference.

During the national conference MSA announced the recipients of its national merit awards. The A.B. Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary in Raleigh, NC was named the recipient of the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award. This award is given annually to the nation's top magnet school and commemorates the organization's founding member, Dr. Ronald P. Simpson. It also includes a $5,000 cash prize sponsored by American Education Solutions, Inc.

"We are honored to give our highest merit award to A.B. Combs," said Executive Director, Scott Thomas. "It's the only magnet school to earn the Simpson award on two separate occasions in our organization's history." The school also received the award in 2006. "A.B. Combs earned this recognition because it is a model magnet school that reflects the values, mission, and pillars of Magnet Schools of America."

Combs Leadership Magnet Elementary School is part of the Wake County Public School System and integrates the philosophies of Dr. Stephen Covey, author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. The vision of this leadership model is evident in all that happens at A.B. Combs, from student-led conferences to student-written speeches and student goal-setting. Its elements and principles have been replicated in over 1,400 national and international schools. In 2008, Dr. Steven Covey captured the success and impact of A.B. Magnets in the News

A.B. Combs Leadership Elementary School was named the top magnet school in the country by the Magnet Schools of America on Friday at its annual conference. A.B. Combs is the first magnet to twice win the Dr. Ronald P. Simpson Distinguished Merit Award, named after the national nonprofit group's founder. The school also won in 2006.

A Midlands educator has been named the president-elect of Magnet Schools of America. Sara Wheeler was sworn in to her new role last week at the Magnet Schools of America's annual conference in Connecticut.

For the first time ever, Connecticut is hosting the annual conference of Magnet Schools of America, and on Friday, magnet schools from southeastern Connecticut got a chance to show off.

When I was hired in 2002 as the Principal of Normal Park Museum Magnet School in Chattanooga, Tenn., the school was in crisis - with failing test scores, a dilapidated building, and low enrollment. My job was to transform the school into a museum magnet school.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan, Connecticut Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor, Gov. Dannel Malloy and both of Connecticut's U.S. senators listened to graduating seniors at University High School of Science and Engineering, a magnet school at the University of Hartford.

Magnet Schools Morphing into Museums
