March Madness is almost upon us, and the snow is beginning to disappear, time for a nice cup of tea and a wild and wonderful Maine Senior College Network newsletter!
This month I begin with "
Why Volunteering is Personally Beneficial," an article originally posted in the Jabberwocky, Sunrise Senior College's Winter newsletter.
Thanks to people like Dale Miller and the army of hard working volunteers across the state we have this outstanding Senior College Network!
The University of Maine in Augusta Senior College continues to be a hub of activity. This month their Forum on the Future takes a look at "Getting There When You Can't Drive." Then they have Choro Louco, a Brazilian Choro band performing in this month's Concert at Jewett.
AARP Fraud Watch will present Frank W. Abagnale author of "Catch Me If You Can" at The University of Southern Maine (Portland).
To round off this month's news, I have a "
Call for Artists" from Belfast Senior College. It is time to encourage your artist friends to submit their work for the 2017 Senior College at Belfast Festival of Art.

Why Volunteering is Personally Beneficial
Sunrise Senior College is an organization developed for the betterment of the senior population in the Machias area. As most of you know, we have celebrated more than ten years in existence and continue to grow and thrive. I believe the reason for this is the commitment that members have shown to help this group become the vital network we are.
I know when I moved to the area almost 15 years ago knowing no one accept my realtor, Sunrise Senior College was in its infancy but quickly became a life line for me.
Over the years, I have attended MANY classes which have enlightened, perplexed, inspired and caused my brain to continue working when it really wanted to quit. For that reason, I felt a calling to help move the organization forward in whatever small way I could. Over the years I have served as editor of the newsletter, helped develop and print the brochures, served as co-chair of the Curriculum Committee and chaired the PR committee, among many other jobs which are necessary for the semesters to run smoothly. My point is not to pat myself on the back but to say if I can do it, we all can do it (or at least a small part of it).
Having left the area for a family crisis for two years, it is great to be back, primarily to continue the relationships I have made through SSC. Without them, life would be boring and lonely.
So I say to you all, we need everyone to volunteer! i

UMA College of Arts and Sciences and UMA Senior College present:
Getting There When You Can't Drive
2 pm Sun., Mar. 19 Jewett Hall, Augusta
Jess Maurer will give an overview of Maine's transportation problem and some solutions - diverse initiatives to serve various types of communities. Bob MacDougall will focus on current transportation in Augusta and some ideas for the future that his Age Friendly Committee is considering. Irene Goff will discuss "Neighbors Driving Neighbors", a local initiative, how it started and the current status of the program.
Jess Mauer is the Executive Director of the
Maine Association of Area Agencies on Aging. She advocates for the health and economic security of older adults at the national, state and local levels on behalf of Maine's five Area Agencies on Aging.
 Bob MacDougall is currently the Chair for them
Augusta Age Friendly Committee, spearheading that initiative, and sits on the
AARP Maine state volunteer advisory board. He is very involved in planning Augusta area transportation.
Irene Goff is the Coordinator for
Neighbors Driving Neighbors (NDN) serving Belgrade, Fayette, Mount Vernon, Rome, Vienna. "I enjoy talking with people in my community connecting them with volunteer drivers so they can get to where they need to go."

Tanya Vanesse, a Computer Technician for the Auburn School Department will present "My Fear Factor Live Reality TV Experience" at the next LA Senior College Food for Thought session on Friday, March 10. Tanya will discuss her unique opportunity to appear in the studio version of Fear Factor Live at Universal Studios. Tanya tried out as a 38-year-old Mom against 20-year-old military folks, and other much-younger participants. Much to her surprise, she not only made it onto the show but also won the competition! She will discuss her thoughts as she participated in "The Endurance Hang," "The Walk of Shame," "Swinging Pendulum Octopus Throw," and The Stuntman's Challenge."

Tanya strives to be a role model for her son and instill in him the attitude that it is never too late to finish something that you have started. Therefore, she returned to college full time while working two part-time jobs and being a full-time, single Mom to earn a Bachelor's degree in Social and Behavioral Science from USM in 2014. Although she has lived in several states and traveled abroad through school, she has always returned to Maine. Ms. Vanesse is excited to talk about her experience and the inspiration that continues with her from taking a chance on a vacation with her family to participate in those most challenging event.
Senior College, now in its 19th year, presents this monthly luncheon program that is open to the public in Function Room 170 at USM LAC. Doors open at 11:30 a.m. and the program will begin promptly at noon. The cost, which includes lunch, is $7 with an advance reservation or $8 at the door. To make your advance reservation, call Senior College at 753-6510 by noon on Wednesday, March 8. Reservation calls received after this date/time will be considered "at the door".

Choro Louco, a Brazilian Choro band from Portland

The "Concerts at Jewett" Series sponsored by University of Maine at Augusta College of Arts and Sciences and UMA Senior College will feature Choro Louco on Sunday, March 5, 2017, 2PM at Jewett Hall Auditorium. (No snow date)
Based in Portland, Maine, Choro Louco is dedicated to the century-old tradition of Brazilian choro music. Choro is known for beautiful melodies, complex harmonies and syncopated rhythms, combining elements of European folk and classical, ragtime, jazz, Latin, and African music. Come and enjoy this ensemble, formed in 2013, and learn about music that is uniquely Brazilian and rarely heard in the US.
Four members of the group will perform at Jewett. Carl Dimow, flute and guitar, plays jazz, classical and klezmer music. Nicole Rabata, flute, has diverse musical interests including celtic, and classical. David Newsam, 8-string guitar and mandolin, brings decades of experience as a jazz and classical guitarist. Eric LaPerna exhibits his great hand percussion skills on the pandeiro, the Brazilian tambourine.

Senior College Artists, It's Time To Show Your Stuff!

The 2017 Senior College at Belfast Festival of Art is initiating it's CALL TO ARTISTS, and a special invitation is extended to Maine Senior College members. We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to show your work in a non-juried, non-competitive event.
Festival Dates
The Festival will be held from June 1 thru 4, 2017 at the UMaine Hutchinson Center in Belfast.
Registration Period for Artists
The registration period for artists is March 1 thru March 31, and the drop-off date for artwork is Wednesday, May 31.
Senior College Art Course Students Send in Your Work!
As you see, there is plenty of time to prepare a piece for the exhibit. We would especially love to have students of Senior College art courses participate in this year's show.

Sleep and Memory Study in Older Adults Study - Looking for Volunteers
People are constantly developing and changing throughout the course of a lifetime. Specifically, sleep patterns and quality are known to change as people get older. Dr. Marie Hayes and Katrina Daigle, graduate student, are conducting research to assess a new sleep monitoring device that identifies sleep movements and breathing changes throughout the night. The goal is to examine the relationship between sleep quality and brain health in individuals who are 65 to 85 years old. Your participation in this research will help identify people with a high risk of fast brain health decline and may provide information about sleep quality and brain functioning.
What is involved?
- A two night sleep study
- A mattress sheet with tiny sensors will be placed under your bed-sheet to measure sleep movements for two nights in a row.
- A seven night sleep study
- A small watch will be placed on your wrist for 7 nights in a row and you will be asked to fill out a sheet about your sleep patterns. The first two nights, you will sleep on the mattress, and keep the watch on for 5 more nights.
- A short memory task to take before and after sleep on the second night.
- A 1- month follow-up visit to complete brain and memory function testing. We will conduct this test in your home, at the Mood and Memory clinic at Acadia hospital, or a University of Maine research lab. It will take about 2-2.5 hours.
What will you receive in exchange for participation?
- $100 visa gift card for the two night sleep study
- $50 visa gift card for the follow-up visit New information about your own sleep and brain functioning

"Catch Me If You Can" with author and scam prevention expert Frank W. Abagnale.

Between the ages of 16 and 21, Frank W. Abagnale successfully posed as an airline pilot, an attorney, and a doctor. He cashed millions in fraudulent checks. In case you didn't read the best-selling book...spoiler alert...he got caught and his exploits were depicted in the movie Catch Me If You Can starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks.
For over 40 years, Mr. Abagnale has advised the FBI on how to outsmart con artists. He is one of the world's most respected authorities on forgery, embezzlement, and secure documents.
Now, he's joined forces with the AARP Fraud Watch Network to help you learn how to spot and avoid scams so you can protect yourself and your family.
