Eagle Connection

MHS Parent Newsletter

September 2017                                          Volume 125  Issue 1

 Botts' Babbles
It is a great day to be an Eagle!  The school is soaring with Eagle Pride and off to an amazing start to the school year.  It has been great getting to know our new students and rewarding to see the growth made by our returning students.  It was a busy summer in our district and school with numerous facility upgrades.  We are excited to show off the newest upgrades and help provide our students with a sense of pride in their school and district.
I am pleased to announce our newest staff members.  They have each been impressive and have already helped make our school a better learning community.  We welcome Beth Janssen (Art), Cady Jackson (English), Lindsay Slater (English), Brenda Stanton (English), Rebecca Doerksen (Social Studies), Chris Fisher (math), Scott Bugbee (Science), Kevin Frye (new assistant principal and former MHS English teacher), Jennifer Cashman (counselor), Jacinda Kenzie (Speech/English), Jaynann Donker (Visually Impaired Teacher), Cassie Reichenberger (Speech-Language Pathologist), and WATC Instructors Lauren Thornhill, Regina Hardin, Vrenda Pritchard, and David Selenke.

Our school is currently in need of a couple parent volunteers to take over as chairpersons of the After-Prom committee.  Without the help of our volunteers, our students would not have a safe alternative during prom season.  Thank you in advance for your consideration.  If you are interested, please let me know at your earliest convenience.

We recently held our club fair at MHS where over 25 clubs promoted their program.  If your student is not currently involved in a club or activity, please encourage him or her to get involved.  If a student has an interest in something that we do not have, we can always look to start a new club.  Each year, the graduates from Maize High School reflect back on their time and offer advice to underclassmen.  Overwhelmingly, the thing most often mentioned is to get involved in something.

There are so many unfortunate events taking place in our country right now from the floods in Texas to the demonstrations of hate and prejudice.  While schools often become microcosms of society, we are working to do our part in making our world a better place.  Our KAY (Kansas Association of Youth) leadership group has been collecting donations from students so that we can send a little help to those being devastated by the floods.  I also want to reiterate our school's stance on those who choose to use their words or actions in hateful and demeaning ways- Maize High School will not tolerate any hateful or racial discrimination towards any person or group.  We are all here to help ensure that EACH student receives a top-notch education in a safe learning environment.
Important Upcoming Dates:
  • Labor Day- September 4, 2017.  There will be no school for students on this day.
  • The Maize FFA program will hold their annual kickoff party on Thursday, September 14th in the Maize High School library parking area from 5-8:00 p.m.  There will be food, animals, big tractors, inflatables, games, and an opportunity purchase Blue & Gold bacon/sausage!
  • Our fall homecoming will take place on Friday, September 22.  We will once again conduct our homecoming parade throughout Maize from 1:30-2:45 on the 22nd.  The homecoming dance will take place on Saturday, 9/23, from 8-11:00 p.m. in the Maize High School Commons.  As part of the week, there will also be a Powder Puff football game on 9/20 and the Coachella and Bon Fire on 9/21.
  • Parent-Teacher Conferences will have a different look this year with conferences being held of Thursday, 9/28, from 4-8:00 p.m. and on Friday, 9/29, from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m.  There will be no school on Friday the 29th
  • October 3rd will be a busy day for our school as we administer ACT testing.
    •  Seniors will take the ACT from 8-noon and will be    dismissed once the test has concluded.
    •  Freshmen and sophomores will take the ACT Aspire test.  They will be in school all day with a modified schedule.
    •  Juniors will not be required to attend school this date.  We encourage students to use this day to visit colleges or arrange to shadow a business or industry.
I want to thank you all in advance for a great school year.  I hope that your student has an outstanding experience.  If you have any questions, concerns, or comments; please do not hesitate to contact me
or any other administrator.

With Eagle Pride,

Parents/Guardians:
Did you know you may electronically check your student's fee balance anytime using your Skyward Family Access Account?  Simply log into your Family Access Account and click on "Fee Management" from the menu on the left.
Periodically you may receive automated email messages from your student's school asking you to check your student's balance for more specific fees such as Athletic Fees, Lost Textbooks, etc.
Skyward Family Access Fee Management is also a good method to check if you've purchased a yearbook for your student this school year.
Cash or check payments for outstanding fees may be sent directly to your student's school.  Include your student's name and the item(s) you are paying for in the memo section of your check or with your cash payment.
Credit card payments for your student's fees or yearbook may be made by selecting "Make A Payment" on the Skyward Family Access "Fee Management" screen.  (Detailed instructions for making online fee or food service payments are provided in Skyward Family Access.  Click on "Online Fee Instructions" listed under "District Links".)
Waived Fee Applications are being accepted.  Families who qualify for free/reduced meals and complete the Consent for Disclosure form (back page of the Application for Free and Reduced Price School Meals) will have their curriculum and/or athletic fees waived if approved.  Do not submit fee payment until your application has been processed and you receive your Notice of Eligibility from the Director of Food Service.  The Application for Free and Reduced Price School Meals may be found on the district web page www.usd266.com listed under "Quick Links" then "Frequently Requested Forms" and "Free/Reduced Application".
Please contact your student's building Accounting Secretary if you have questions regarding your student's fees or your student's building Skyward Secretary for questions/problems with your Skyward Family Access Log-In.
Note:  Full yearbook payment is required to secure your student's yearbook.

Attendance Counts
ABSENCES
When your student is absent, it is the responsibility of the parents/guardians to call the school to verify the reason for the absence. The absence is unverified without parent contact. Please note the unexcused/unverified absence policy as follows:
  1. Student is unexcused absent on day 1. No verification is received from parent or guardian.
  2. On the evening of Day 1, an auto-dialer message will be sent requesting verification.
  3.  At 10:30am on Day 2, a second auto-dialer message will be sent requesting verification.
  4. Parents/guardians will have 24 hours from that message to call or email the attendance office.
  5. After 10:30 on Day 3, students whose absences are not verified by a parent/guardian, medical note, administrative excuse or other approved method WILL received a four hour detention. Parents/guardians may NOT excuse the detention after it has been assigned.
Please call or email the Attendance Office promptly to verify students' absences.
MHS Front Office: 722-0441 (option #1)
Amy McKay, Attendance Office 350-2148
Jewel Taylor, Attendance Office 350-2110

When a student has accumulated four absences, he/she will be notified. Parents of students with five and six absences in one block during a nine week term will be emailed.
Students with six absences will not receive credit in that class. Those parents with no email availability will continue to receive letters.

TARDIES
Please remember that all high school tardies are cumulative from the beginning of the school year. Parents may excuse their student for being late to school three times with no consequence. After those three are used, tardies to school will count toward the total even when they are parent excused.
For further information/clarification on attendance and tardies, you may refer to the students' agenda handbook, pages 11-12 and 48. You may also refer to the Students Handbook online.

LUNCH
Maize had a Closed Lunch policy. If a student leaves the building for lunch, he/she must be picked up by a parent/guardian IN the office and must return within his/her allowed lunchtime. If the student returns after their designated time, he/she will be counted tardy or absent. This may result in a detention being assigned. If a student has an appointment during their lunchtime, they are expected to provide documentation upon return to school.
Please refer to page 42 of the agenda handbook for further details.

Congratulations to our new Eagle Trap Shooting team and Coach Mercado on a successful first year! The MHS Eagle Trap Shooting team was formed last year and has filled a void for several students with this interest. Students who joined have seen great success, both in sports and academics as well. We look forward to another exciting year!

Brooklyn Deforeest and Alex Palmer made a "thank you" video for the International Space Station/Tomatosphere project organizers for ISS tomato seeds we used in our"Mars" closed ecosystems in Biology class. Apparently, after being re-posted to numerous STEM foundation websites and social media news feeds, the video was entered into a contest that First the Seed Foundation of Arlington, VA was having about engaging STEM. As a result, Maize High School won an ISS-Above, a device which shows a live feed of the International Space Station's location and it views of Earth at all times. (http://www.issabove.com)

Betsy Manning and Megan Sauer took 11 volleyball players to the KU Team Camp this summer. The team worked closely with KU coaches and players while improving their skill and knowledge of the game. The Eagles made it to the Semi-Final match of the top tournament bracket placing in the top 4 out of 30 teams. The Lady Eagles are looking forward to an incredible season!
Driver's Education
USD 266 Maize offers Online Driver Education during the school year (Term 1; Term 2; Term 3; Term 4).  The online driver education program strives to prepare students to become knowledgeable and respectful of the law, to learn basic driving skills, and to develop a responsible attitude toward driving.  The instructors will provide critical experience to students, involve parents in the process, and foster cooperative interaction with others in the driving environment.  More detailed information on Online Driver Education can be found on the high school website under the Counselor's Corner link.

Online Driver Education:  2017-2018 Enrollment Nights (Enrollment packets may be picked up in the Counselors' Office or online under the Counselors' Corner.)

Term 2: October 11, 2017; 6:00pm; Maize High School Lecture Hall
Term 3: December 6, 2017; 6:00pm; Maize High School Lecture Hall
Term 4: March 7, 2018; 6:00pm; Maize High School Lecture Hall

**Students and parents need to attend the enrollment meeting.  Please bring your enrollment packet, a writing pen, and any type of Kansas Permit or License you already have to the Enrollment Meeting.**

Front Office Processes
If you need to report your students' attendance or need your student to be called out due to a medical appointment or illness, you may reach the Attendance Office by calling (316) 722-0441 and selecting option #1.

  • Please have it labeled with their first and last name printed legibly.
  • Place money (cash & checks) in a sealed envelope with students first and last name printed legibly.
  • Understand the front office is not responsible for any items left for  students.
  • Understand your student is responsible for picking up their item. It will not be delivered. Exceptions will not be made without administrative approval.
When you have to leave a message for your student:
  • Please call 722-0441 and select option #2 to reach a Front Office Secretary.
  • Provide your students name and spelling.
  • Concisely state the message.
  • Understand that your student will be called via intercom during passing periods to receive the message.

  • Student and visitors may be requested to eat in our main MHS Front Office Conference Room.

When your student needs to leave school before the end of the day:
  • Please do not text or call your student that they will be leaving before you have notified the school via a Front Office or Attendance secretary. There is an attendance process that must be followed.
One of the goals in the MHS Front Office is to not disrupt instruction in classrooms during teaching except in the case of emergency. Emergencies will be identified by the grade level administrator. Students' names will be called during passing periods via our intercom system to notify them of passes, items that have been dropped off, or messages awaiting them in the Front Office. It is their responsibility to come to the office when called.
We look forward to a great 2017 - 2018 school year.

Peggy Cardenas (Nurse Para)-- A CNA/CMA is not required for this position in the nurse's office, but this summer Peggy made the choice to go back to school and get her CNA (certified nurse aide) and CMA (certified Medication aide) license.  "I felt it was something that would help me perform my  job duties here at MHS, as well as serve our students and families more competently."

She'll be pouring you a cup and saying, "Hello, how ya been?" Desi Oakley (2007) ( Les Misérables, Evita ) will star as Jenna in the national tour of Waitress . Three students attended KAY Leadership Camp in July at Rock Springs 4-H Center. Andrea Fuhrman (12), Nicole Dowell (11) and Lauren Fuhrman (10), were among the more than 250 students from around the state who spent a week at the camp developing leadership skills and learning about ways they can become more involved in their communities.

This June Zoey Knapp and Mathew Neises attended a Food Science conference at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln.  Each school at the conference designed a research project.  The students performed their research at the University of Nebraska's brand new innovation campus.  At the end of the week each school presented their research findings in the form of a research poster.  Zoey and Matt received the award for best research project.  Their poster can be seen hanging in the G Hall at Maize High School.

A big shout out and thank you to Braden Stamper (10) who created this year's agenda cover design!

Parking / Traffic Information
Hello Maize High Parents and students.  With the start of a new school year, I thought now would be a good time to review parking regulations and other citable offenses through the USD 266 district.  As time allows, I will drive through the parking lot at random times trying to keep order and enforcing the regulations.  All traffic and other citable offenses are listed on page 49 of your student's agenda.  They are the following:
  1. The maximum speed limit on all school property is 10 miles/hour, unless otherwise posted

Student who are issued a campus citation on school property have the right to an appeal with ten business days from the date of issuance.  Students must contact the school resource officer (SRO) and schedule an appointment.  In lieu of fines, students may negotiate community service projects to work off their fines with the SRO.
On that note, I believe it is your student's responsibility to deal with any citations they receive.  I am more the willing to speak with parents about the tickets and explain why it was issued, however, it will still be the student's responsibility to take care of the citation and will have to speak with me to resolve the situation.  I believe citations can be a learning experience for the students and hope to use the opportunity to teach rather than punish.

Thank you.

Changing our Community

Dana Desjardins, RN
SAFE/SADD Sponsor

MHS SADD has changed its name. The club is now known as MHS SAFE, Seatbelts Are For Everyone. The number 1 killer and life changing injuries among our teens is motor vehicle accidents. Our students partnered up with the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office to make a change. Here is what MHS SAFE/SADD and other 150 Kansas High Schools in 62 counties accomplished last year.

-SAFE Teens conducted the Kansas State Observational Seatbelt Survey - results from the 2016-2017 survey found 85% of teens between the age of 15-17 wear their seatbelts.
- Safe was awarded the National Safety Council Teen Driving Safety Leadership Award in October 2016.
-Senate Bill 89 passed creating sustainable funding sources for schools like Maize High who have the SAFE program in their schools.
-Fines for those who do not wear their seatbelts increased from $10.00 to $30.00 plus court costs.
-Fines for drivers who are texting and driving increased to $500.00 plus court costs.
-MHS SAFE was awarded Rookie of the Year by the Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office.
-MHS SAFE was able to award 2 college scholarships last year to MHS students and will be able to award 4 scholarships to MHS SAFE students this year!

Laura Moore, Kansas Traffic Safety Resource Office, wrote, "This success is all thanks to the hard work of the students and adult sponsors across Kansas. Thank you!!!!"

YEARBOOK
Our new yearbook staff has been working hard to distribute the 2016-2017 yearbooks. Please email adviser Anne Debes with any questions regarding last year's book at  adebes@usd266.com . You might have just received your 2017 yearbook, but we're already planning ahead! If you want to plan ahead too, you can pre-purchase a  2017-2018  Maize High yearbook.

How do you pre-purchase a 2018 yearbook? Three options exist:
1.  Pay through Skyward.  Several students pre-purchased yearbooks via Skyward Family Access during enrollment, and this option will be available through the end of March.
2.  Visit the Jostens Website.  Jostens is the company that publishes our yearbook. You can go directly to the Jostens website,  www.jostens.com , and they will add your order to our official list.  Please notice that the initial charge on their website is $37.21, then they add $2.79 tax, for a total of $40.
3.  Pay in Person.  Bring $40 cash or a check made out to MHS Yearbook to Mrs. Debes in room F39. Make sure you include your child's name and the fact that you are purchasing a 2017 yearbook with your order.
**If your child receives free/reduced lunches , he or she may qualify for a free yearbook. Please contact adviser Anne Debes for more information at  adebes@usd266.com .

When will my Maize High student or grad get his or her yearbook?
Because we, like many high school yearbooks, cover the whole school year in one bound edition, the book is printed over the summer and distributed in early August of the following school year.  We will email graduates and send out messages via social media when they can pick up yearbooks or have friends/family members pick them up in the front office. Students who still go to MHS in August will receive their pre-purchased books the first week of school.

What about senior ads?  We will send out senior ad information in October, so be on the lookout for another awesome yearbook opportunity soon!

Can I still buy a 2016-2017 yearbook?  We might still have a few extra 2016-2017 yearbooks to sell. Please email adviser Anne Debes regarding past yearbooks.

Further questions?  Please email adviser Anne Debes at  adebes@usd266.com .

Thanks to all of our Eagle parents, guardians, and students for supporting our award-winning, student-produced publication!
