JOINT HEALTH & SAFETY COMMITTEE CERTIFICATION TRAINING

Wilkens Health and Safety Solutions (WHSS) is the only Ministry of Labour (MOL) approved Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification training provider located in Kingston.
As most workplaces with twenty (20) or more workers must have a JHSC established, we regularly hold training sessions. At least one (1) worker and one (1) management representative of this committee must be certified by completing the prescribed training standards set by the MOL.

Employer Fined $115,000 After Worker Suffers Crushing Injury

LONDON, ONTARIO - A company providing sales and service of tractors and other equipment used in the construction industry pleaded guilty and has been fined $115,000 after a worker suffered injuries from a falling piece of equipment.

What does this mean?A
mendments were made to the OH&S Act, giving the Chief Prevention Officer (CPO) the power to accredit "health and safety management systems" and give recognition to employers that use these accredited systems.
What are the next steps?
In the meantime, the MOL will be holding extensive consultations to develop the accreditation standard and employer recognition program.

MOL asks the first responder community to submit their PTSD prevention plans
|
On April 23, 2017 organizations within the first responder community are being asked by the MOL to submit their PTSD prevention plans. This initiative is extremely important for ensuring the mental health of all first responders is prioritized.
If you employ first responders, we suggest signing up for an upcoming webinar hosted by the Public Services Health & Safety Association (PSHSA). The webinar will highlight how to create a PTSD prevention plan for your organization.

Ensure your employees receive public holiday pay

Ontario has nine public holidays where most employees, who are covered by the Employment Standards Act, are entitled to take the day off work and receive public holiday pay.
These holidays include:
New Year's Day, Family Day, Good Friday, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day, Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, and Boxing Day (December 26).

Do you Employ Temporary Foreign Workers?

Ontario developed a new info-sharing agreement to keep temporary foreign workers safe
|
The new agreement allows the federal government and the province of Ontario to exchange data, including the names of employers and recruitment agents seeking to hire temporary foreign workers. This will help:
- Increase Ontario's oversight of workplaces that hire temporary foreign workers;
- Ensure employers are complying with the province's workplace laws;
- Identify and report employers who fail to comply with workplace rights and standards; and
- Determine whether employers are eligible to hire foreign workers.

The Ministry of Labour is currently in the process of finalizing sector strategies for the 2017/18 fiscal year. Their workplace inspection Blitzes will be announced over the next few months.
In addition to focusing on Young Workers, Vulnerable Workers and compliance with the new Sexual Harassment requirements, the MOL willl focus on additional hazards in the various sectors.
