Issue Number 11 - November 2016

Gratitude is the foundation on which you can build a new outlook on life and change how you feel about yourself. The choice can be yours at any time-if you are centered in the present moment, and if you can let go of our societal belief that more is better.
Look at how our culture has gone from small efficient homes built in the 1940s to huge five bedroom, five bath houses that only three people live in. The size of the American automobile is still by far the largest of any of the automakers and most imported vehicle makers have a model specifically built for the American market that is huge too. All of this pressure to have more or the latest model or newest trendy item is an attempt we all make to find happiness outside of ourselves. We get on the treadmill and buy to satisfy ourselves, but the feeling only lasts a short time and we find ourselves back at the store or, now even easier, online, to purchase what we want. The next time you buy something ask yourself, "is this a want or a need?" and you might start to slowly shift out of the consumer buying for happiness mentality.
How can you turn this around and find the unlimited source of happiness and joy inside? Go outside and connect with nature. Feel the coldness of the early morning and breathe in the healing air. Walk on the grass with bare feet and get grounded. Put down your personal computer devices and talk with a loved one. Look them in the eye and practice your communication skills and then give them a big hug. These tactics get you out of your head and into the present moment where you can finally feel relief from the suffering you cause yourself when you critique the past or worry about the future.
When we offer thanks to others, gratitude gifts us with renewal, reflection, and reconnection. Life will continue to challenge you for the rest of your existence. How you choose to live is up to you. Choose to be happy no matter what. There is a deeply satisfying sensation that permeates the entire nervous system when you can handle a challenging situation in life with ease. You will feel in control of your emotions and will see life objectively. Tolerance and patience for those in your family will bloom and respect will be shared by both sides.
Start a forty day challenge to create the habit of living in gratitude. Write down in a dedicated journal every morning or evening five things you are grateful for. I recommend The Simple Abundance Journal of Gratitude by Sarah Ban Breathnach. Leave your journal on a bedside table and each night reflect on the amazing day you experienced. You will fall asleep feeling positive and content. This can be the best gift you give to yourself and to your family this holiday season. Happiness is a quality of mind that is yours whenever you choose it.
