Welcome to our first edition of  "Making Connections".

This  newsletter is all about keeping Child Development & Education (CDE) Directors, Coordinators and Educators in the know. With this bi-monthly newsletter, we want to provide  statewide professional development opportunities, information and updates on current EEC initiatives along with resources and support available to enhance your programs.  It is our hope that Directors and Coordinators will use this information to bring additional support to the Educators they serve.

We also want Making Connections to be your place to share ideas and best practices.  Feel free at anytime to submit information to the contact below.

CDE's Professional Development Days

EEC has made the early education and out-of-school time workforce an agency-wide priority. In support of this priority, EEC requires contracted agencies to provide 4 days annually of professional development to their Educators.

These opportunities offer 5 hour high quality training on topics that support child care programs and educators as well as EEC initiatives such as the QRIS.

CDE wants to ensure these PD days are meeting the needs of the field. Our Spring survey data was analyzed and used to select the topic for our PD day in September. To help us choose the right topics for the next 3 PD Days, please click on the here to complete the survey again!
This is a wonderful opportunity to network with peer colleagues and learn new strategies and best practices to enhance programs.

The Coordinators' Coaching cohort pilot was completed in the Spring.  We have heard wonderfully positive feedback from Directors, Coordinators and Educators on the new coaching interactions between Coordinators and their Educators.  Coordinators are learning to incorporate core dispositions, knowledge and skills essential in the relationship between Coordinators and Educators.  These new skills work to support program quality, good outcomes for children and families and to sustain effective technical assistance.

The 2017/2018 Coordinator's Coaching Cohort begins in September and will be facilitated again by Linda Schumacher.  Linda brings 1st hand knowledge and research to her coaching trainings. The cohort will be guided by the book "Inspiring Early Childhood Leadership:  Eight Strategies to Ignite Passion and Transform Program Quality".  Each Coordinator will be provided with this book.  We are looking forward to this continued workforce development for our Coordinators and supported by CDE Senior Management.

Early Childhood Mental Health
Are there children in one of the programs you support who have any of these behaviors?
        • avoid eye contact
        • isolation or withdrawal
        • outbursts of emotion or anger; tantrums that don't stop
        • inability to be soothed or comforted
        • sleep disturbances; nightmares, inability to fall asleep due to fear etc.
Is additional support needed to support one of these children?  EEC continues to fund the Early Childhood Mental Health Consultation (ECMHC) and seeks to provide early childhood mental health consultation services that address the developmental, social and emotional, and behavioral challenges of infants and young children that will support healthy development, reduce the suspension and expulsion rate in early education and care settings, and promote school success.

Discuss a potential referral with your Director. Together, you can seek additional support from the ECMHC grantee in your region:
