Headwaters Communities in Action
How can we make our wonderful community even better? How can taking a completely different approach make a difference?

This month we encourage you to think different. Try a new approach to a challenge or take a different view of a situation and you might be surprised by the results!

As we develop a sustainability plan for Farm to School, review priorities for HFFA and re-invent our communication strategy, we encourage your input and appreciate your ideas.
DC MOVES Better Together
DC MOVES (Dufferin County – Managing, Organizing, Validating, Engagement Strategies)

Thursday February 8, 2018 : Our first DC MOVES FORUM of 2018 was well attended and very well received as indicated in our feedback survey. Attendees reported they were inspired to keep connecting, learning, sharing and finding opportunities to partner and collaborate. We were pleased to see new faces in the room and to make new connections. Our presenters provided information and updates on their initiatives and generated great interest. We also launched our second hash tag #DCMOVEScommunitywellbeing.

You can get a glimpse of the event by looking at the presentations below.

DC MOVES organizes and presents forums quartery for  participating organizations  and interested stakeholders. These half-day events offer a platform for sharing information about local service providers, collecting feedback and input on proposed programs and services and supporting collaborations for increased collective impact.

Planning for the next Forum is underway watch for the save the date in our March update and stay tuned to DCMOVES.org for more information.
Headwaters Food and Farming Alliance (HFFA)
HFFA is a valuable network for individuals and organizations committed to the promotion of local food.

We would like to welcome Jacalyn Dryland, from the Dufferin Area Family Health Team as our new Chair for HFFA and thank past-chair Lisa Needham for her leadership and WDG Public Health for their continued support of HFFA. The members of the HFFA Hub would also like to welcome new member Ian Payne, from the local chapter of the National Farmers Union.

HFFA is currently exploring requirements, opportunities and priorities for 2018. The group is looking to support tangible projects, initiatives and activities that serve the goals of the Headwaters Food Charter, which has been developed and endorsed by local councils and stakeholders over the past few years.

HFFA already supports activities such as the Headwaters Farm Fresh Map and has lent its support to the Dufferin Farm Tour. Because the Ontario Trillium Foundation grant that was awarded to the Farm to School program is coming to an end in 2018, the group is focusing on ways to sustain the program, including opportunities for fundraising.

A number of other activities supporting local food have also been identified, including:
  • Central Counties Tourism is conducting a pilot project in Headwaters to engage farmers and determine the training they might need to strengthen the customer experience and capacity to deliver their services.
  • Golden Horseshoe Food & Farming Alliance, along with the University of Guelph and OMAFRA have submitted a research proposal to explore the long term impact of local food procurement in long-term care facilities.
  • The Town of Orangeville will be sponsoring an agricultural workshop in the fall.
  • Among other activities, the Wellington-Dufferin-Guelph Public Health will be working towards reducing Food Waste in Dufferin County and supporting the efforts of the Dufferin County Poverty Task Force.

The HFFA group recognizes the importance of communicating these and other initiatives of interest to the community via all of our communication platforms.
Farm to School - Sustainability Plan
The Farm to School team is undertaking some important and interesting work in planning for the sustainability of the programs beyond the end of their Ontario Trillium Foundation Grant.

Stakeholder consultation and program evaluation results have revealed which elements of the programs are most important to community members, and the team has come up with scenarios for various levels of funding required. They meet again to discuss funding strategy and develop a fundraising plan on March 2nd, 2018 from 12:30 to 4:30 at WDG Public Health (180 Broadway).

Anyone in the community with a passion for or expertise in fundraising is invited to join this exciting conversation! Click the button below to register.
