Photo of the week!
Jess & Jock White take the LPC "Retro" Triathlon literally!

Some people just know how to have some fun! Jess & Jock might be fooling around the day before the race with their retro style and old school bike but on race day they always bring their best. While this might be their first year of serious racing I have a feeling we will be seeing a lot more of them!

Mark Walter athlete profile of the week

Mark has been a Malone Coaching athlete for the past 3 years competing in everything from 5K's to his first Ironman last year at B2B. This year for the second half of the season is goal is to get back to basics and focus on running fast. He has nailed multiple negative splits in pretty much every distance so it will be exciting to see what he can do now that the focus is just on running!

Mark lives and works in Centerville, VA.

Mary is at it again & Tammy is on the Podium!
Ladies looking good in team uniform!

Tammy Harnett is a relative new comer to our team this year and while she might just be beginning no one has more passion for the sport. Her hard work and determination landed her on the podium this past weekend! Here she and Mary (who is no stranger to the podium) show off their awards.

Mary was actually on the podium twice this weekend racing Saturday and Sunday which seems to be the new norm for her. For those of you who don't know Mary, you should since she is also one of our proud sponsors as well as a dedicated athlete.

Triathlon should enhance your life not take over your life.

Coaching legend, Brett Sutton, was asked if he could wish one thing for age groupers in triathlon, what would that be?

His answer: "Consistency. And understand that if you're coming in to the sport, and you're not going to be a pro, the main goal is health...so don't destroy your family. All of this 'I want to go faster and longer' is causing athletes to get lost in the 'holistic pie.' If you are starting to sacrifice other things to get 5 minutes faster, is that really healthy? Or is it starting to make you unhinge in other areas? Then, you have the competitive component...which has over-run what triathlon was all about to begin with. Use the sport to be healthy and enhance your lifestyle and family life."

Huma Energy Gel

Energy Gels & Exercise

Hma energy gels are specifically designed to help you get through tough exercise. How? Let's take a look at the science!

Your Body as a Power Plant

When your muscles need energy, the first source they go to is the glucose in your bloodstream. Glucose enters your bloodstream in one of two ways: by being digested from food, or from your body's glycogen stores (stored excess glucose). When you're sitting around after a meal, your blood glucose level is more than adequate to take care of your physical exertion. When you're exercising, however, it's not.

In order to keep your muscles operating at their best during exercise, your body dumps glucose into them. Most people have enough glycogen stores to sustain them for about 60-90 minutes. Once the glycogen stores are gone, your body is forced to turn to fat as an energy source. The problem with using fat as an energy source is that it's not a quick source of energy, so your body will be unable to sustain high levels of exertion (>60% VO2 Max). This is called "hitting the Wall."

For anyone trying to complete some difficult exercise, this is not a problem you want to face.

Energy Gels to the Rescue

Hma energy gels are one of the best ways around this problem. By consuming Hma's special carbohydrate blend before and during exercise, you supply your body with extra glucose through digestion. This allows your glycogen stores to last longer.

While there are many potential sources of carbohydrates, Hma energy gels are a great balance between having a lot of liquid sloshing around in your stomach and eating solid food which can take too long to digest effectively.

Hma energy gels pack a strategic carbohydrate punch of 100 calories/21g carbohydrates per pouch since the average person can digest 100-150 calories per 1/2 hour. On top of that, Hma energy gels specifically use carbohydrates known to efficiently convert into glucose.

So whether you're playing sports with friends or 3 hours into a triathlon, Hma is a great-tasting, all-natural way to get the energy you need!

When To Use?

Anyone planning on exercising can benefit from eating a Hma energy gel. While everyone is different, here is a general guideline for use until you figure out what works for you:

  • Less than 2 hours of exercise: eat one gel 30-45 minutes before exercise, and then one 45-60 minutes into exercise.
  • More than 2 hours of exercise: eat one gel 15 minutes before exercise. Eat another gel 45-60 minutes into exercise. After that, eat an additional gel every 30-45 minutes of exercise.

Remember: WATER!!

Always drink water when you eat a Hma energy gel! Your body can't process the gel effectively without it. Our recommendation is 8-10oz of water per gel.

HGF Looking for Course Marshals
We need 5-6 volunteers from Malone Coaching on October 25th to man Syuka Mountain in Tryon from 10-2.

On Saturday October 25th for the 3rd year, George Hincapie, retired world class professional cyclist along with family and friends are hosting a Gran Fondo in our area!  Hundreds of cyclists will be pedaling in our backyard and it is time for us to showcase our area and its beauty!  The ride/event planners are looking for many volunteers to make this ride a success.

The most critical need is for course marshals.  Course marshals provide safety for the riders by letting them know about upcoming changes in direction or dangerous descents and hairpin turns.  Course Marshals also provide notification to motorists in the case of slowing traffic.

Course Marshals are needed all along the route from 9:00AM until about 2:00PM with our most critical areas being around Lake Lanier in Tryon, up and down Skyuka Mountain, and any other possible high-traffic areas.

Besides front row seats to all of the action and being able to see professional riders on our roads, all volunteers will receive the following for their time and efforts:

A cyclist musette bag (aka "feeder bags") full of goodies like an official Rider's Guide, an offical Volunteer t-shirt, Hincapie water bottle, coupons to local events and businesses, Hincapie socks, and an official event bottle of wine!  Course Marshals are also invited back to the beautiful Hotel Domestique for a FREE, family-friendly festival with live music, inflatable rides for kid, food, beer, and a chance to meet the professional riders!  Just wear your volunteer t-shirt for entry.
For just a few hours of your time on a beautiful fall Saturday come out and support professional and local cyclists as they pedal though our area all for a great cause!  The procedes from the ride go to and support the Greenville Meals on Wheels which means you would also be supporting a great, local charity.

If you are interested and available, please contact Kimberly Morgan event organizer directly at [email protected] or local contact Katie Malone 864-415-5804.

Go to Strictly Running.com to register

Race starts at 8am
Course closes at 11:30am

The Tryon Half Marathon is the perfect course for first-timers and those who appreciate a softer surface without going fully "trail!"

It will be hard to find a flatter, more scenic mountain course than this one. Fall temperatures and a mostly packed dirt/gravel course that meanders along a riverside through Tryon's famous "horse country" are all that is needed to make this an unbelievable 13.1 mile experience.
