The following three workshops will focus specifically on the needs of pediatric transplant survivors:


In this workshop, Dr. Michelle Hudspeth will discuss
  • long-term complications that can develop after a pediatric transplant and strategies for managing them
  •  post-transplant issues including
    • Cognitive problems
    • Pubertal development
    • Chronic GVHD
  • steps to take that can minimize the risk of developing late complications
  • how to select adult healthcare providers and information to provide them as they follow the patient long-term
  • schedule of screenings survivors should receive as an adult 


 


In this workshop, Dr. Melanie Bonner will discuss: 
  • the incidence of cognitive deficits/delays in childhood survivors of a transplant
  • the cause and risk factors of arrested or delayed developmental cognitive milestones  
  • strategies for use at home and in school to assist children with cognitive difficulties
  • what an individualize education plan (IEP) is and who can request one
  • where to get assistance in advocating for an IEP or other special help in school, including high school and college


In this workshop, Dr. Christina Wiedl will discuss: 
  • how stem cell transplantation affects pubertal development in pediatric and young adult transplant patients 
  • interventions that may be required to facilitate normal pubertal development
  • risk factors for infertility following a stem cell transplant
  • strategies for having a family following a stem cell transplant including
    • in-vitro fertilization
    • surrogacy
    • adoption

Meet Michelle Hudspeth MD   
Dr. Michelle Hudspeth
Dr. Michelle Hudspeth is the Director of the Pediatric BMT program and the Quality Director for both the adult and pediatric BMT programs at the Medical University of South Carolina Children's Hospital.
 
Dr. Hudspeth is part of the MUSC FACT Survivorship program, one of the oldest pediatric survivorship programs in the country. 

Meet Melanie Bonner PhD
Dr. Melanie Bonner
Dr. Melanie Bonner is a Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences with a primary appointment in the Division of Child and Family Mental Health and Developmental Neuroscience at Duke University Medical Center. She holds a joint appointment in the Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University where she is a member of the Clinical Psychology Program faculty.
 
Dr. Bonner's research interests include the evaluation and remediation of cognitive deficits in children with central nervous system disease or damage and the impact of this disease on quality of life. She has been a collaborator on numerous projects and publications aimed at the evaluating and ameliorating late effects in pediatric cancer survivors.

Dr. Christina Wiedl
Dr. Christina Wiedl is the Director of the Pediatric and Young Adult Bone Marrow Transplant Program at the Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU Massey Cancer Center.

Dr. Wiedl is a member of the society of adolescent and young adult oncology, American Society of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology, American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, and Pediatric Blood and Marrow Transplant Consortium.  Dr. Wiedl is also a member of the National Clinical Trial Network working group on adolescent and young adult oncology.
