Dear Friends,

As Spring arrives (again!), our efforts turn to our origins - A Calendar to Live By!  Eleven Boobers! from Richmond, VA to Moyock, NC have been selected to appear in the  eighth "breast health guide disguised as a calendar,"  and Julie Harberts of Purple Owl Photography has been selected to photograph our beautiful models.  The calendar remains not just an important fundraiser for BB!, but our primary educational tool.  Beyond Boobs! has experienced so much growth since we set out to change the world with that first calendar seven years ago, and we would not be where we are today without all of the people who give their hearts and time to the organization - our volunteers.  We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who volunteers with BB! to helps us spread our mission of education and support.  Vicki Vawter, our Events and Marketing Manager shares her reflections of volunteers below.

Hugs, Mary Beth

"Great things are brought about, and burdens are lightened through the efforts of many hands anxiously engaged in a good cause." ~ Elder M. Russell ballard

Along with the sounds and scents of Spring, our office is buzzing with many hands and hearts that help make Beyond Boobs! alive and thriving.  I am one of the lucky ones - one that gets to work in an office each and every day where people are both excited and motivated to make their lives healthier, support and encourage one another, and give the most important gift of all... their time.

At BB!, we use the phrase "drank the Kool-Aid" but only in the most positive way.  When people come to the office to work, volunteer, or just visit, something special happens that makes us all just get the real reason we are all here. Get the cause, understand the situation, and respond to the call to action with enthusiasm and passionI've seen people pour their whole hearts into all that BB! stands for.  For some, it was their own personal diagnosis of breast cancer that forced them into this crazy club no one wants to join, and they want to help others who come after them. For others who have friends or family members who were diagnosed with cancer, embracing the work of Beyond Boobs! helps them honor their loved ones.  For others, they simply want to be able to make a difference in the lives of others.

There are women around me fighting every day with so much positivity and strength, I can't help but be inspired to move mountains right along beside them. In one of my favorite books, Tuesdays with Morrie, Mitch Albom writes about a man he admired with his whole heart, and that man shared this tale with him: "The story is about a little wave, bobbing along in the ocean, having a grand old time. He's enjoying the wind and the fresh air-until he notices the other waves in front of him, crashing against the shore. "My God, this is terrible," the wave says. "Look what's going to happen to me!" Then along comes another wave. It sees the first wave, looking grim, and it says to him, "Why do you look so sad?" The first wave says, "You don't understand! We're all going to crash! All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn't it terrible?" The second wave says, "No, you don't understand. You're not a wave, you're part of the ocean."

Indeed, being a part of BB! and knowing the many people who make our cause bigger than just themselves is an honor. At our office, in this community, and in support system facilitators' homes across 3 states, burdens are indeed lightened and many hands eagerly engaged. May we all find that thing that motivates us want to be part of an ocean.

Gratefully, Vicki Vawter

Crystal
31, diagnosed at 29, no immediate family history

IT Security Analyst, former US Navy sailor, and wife, Crystal found a lump doing her regular monthly breast self-exam. She immediately went to her doctor, who referred her for an ultrasound, mammogram, and biopsy. Four days after learning she had breast cancer, Crystal's Navy husband was sent on sea trial, but returned just in time for her bilateral mastectomy which was followed by chemotherapy, radiation, and reconstruction.   Read more
Beyond Boobs! competes for Reality Show Dare Me For Charity

In just a few weeks of launching registrations, Dare Me For Charity has signed up several thousand nonprofits, across 42 cities nationwide. With team support growing by the thousands, season one of Dare Me For Charity is set to be one of the largest coordinated stunts in U.S. history. Beyond Boobs! is on board to make the leap for our cause and again live life with a very tall exclamation point. Many survivors, friends, and family members have already registered to leap from a lifting platform upwards of 4 stories high and jump multiple times into a giant airbag, in order to rack up as much footage as possible. The higher we jump, the better our chances at winning $50,000.  The event takes place on July 26th in Norfolk, and we want you to consider joining our team or just cheering us on at the filming of this super-cool new show by signing up at http://dareme4charity.com/campaign/1049 .

Calendar Sponsor of the Month

16 Time LPGA Champion, Cristie Kerr comes to the  Williamsburg  Wine and Cheese Shop in support of Beyond Boobs!

Cristie Kerr returns in just a couple of weeks to the Kingsmill Championship Tournament to defend her title, but she also has another agenda.  Cristie has been in partnership with Pride Mountain Vineyards to produce a line of fine wines called Curvature Wines to benefit charities dedicated to breast cancer awareness and health. Cristie reached out to The Wine and Cheese Shop at Merchant's Square, and owner, Mary Ellen Power, knew that Beyond Boobs! was just the charity to benefit from Cristie's efforts. On May 12th from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, The Cheese Shop invites special guests to sample her wines, enjoy heavy hors d' oeuvres, other tastings, and meet Cristie herself.  A portion of the proceeds will benefit Beyond Boobs! We are most grateful to The Cheese Shop and to Cristie for this wonderful opportunity.

To reserve space at this limited engagement or to reserve your own autographed Curvature wine, please call The Wine and Cheese Shop at 757-229-6754, and ask for Rick

Quinoa with Tomato, Zucchini, and Basil

Quinoa is a wonderful gift to vegans and vegetarians. It provides bountiful protein, calcium, iron, magnesium, and fiber in respectable quantities, with very little fat. This simple quinoa dish makes a nice presentation served at room temperature, especially for warm weather meals. Recipe adapted from Extraordinary Vegan  2013 by Alan Roettinger, reprinted with permission of Book Publishing Company. Photo by Andrew Schmidt.

Serves: 4

  • 1/2 cup quinoa
  • 1 cup water
  • Pinch sea salt
  • 1 natural salt-free vegetable bouillon cube, optional
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil (or better yet, grapeseed oil)
  • 1 small onion, diced
  • 2 small zucchini, quartered lengthwise and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • Freshly ground pepper to taste
  • 2 tablespoons coarsely chopped fresh basil
  • Fresh tomato slices, as needed
