An important map from Dog Lovers 4 Safe Trapping
The map below shows where MN dogs were killed in body grip traps. It will shock you when you see how many good dogs have been killed in MN. Even we had no idea how many until we went through all of the records.

As you look at the map below for your county there are some important things to keep in mind.
  1. Each dot represents a good dog killed and a grieving family left behind.
  2. Reporting the death of a dog in a trap is voluntary so the number of reports is probably a lot less than the number of dogs killed. One study showed that even with mandatory reporting and no penalty for accidental killing the reporting rate was only 1 in 4.
  3. Many incomplete records of dogs killed are not shown on this map.
  4. Many dogs "disappear" each trapping season and leave no report to show how they died.
  5. Many dog owners are so grief stricken that they don't report their dog dying in a trap.
  6. Formal reporting did not start until 2012 and most of the informal records have been lost.
  7. The Lynx Management Zone was formed in 2008 and requires body grip traps to be set 3' off the ground or in cubbies with the trap recessed 7" behind a 7"x7" opening. Most bobcat trappers in the Lynx Zone have stopped using body grips and switched back to foothold traps. Switching back to foothold traps is likely the main reason why there are no records of dogs being killed in the zone not the body grip trap restrictions. We have no records of any dogs killed in the Lynx Zone since 2008. One dog was caught in a muskrat sized body grip trap and suffered no injury.
