SPRING BREAK
MARCH 31ST TO APRIL 6TH

EASTER SUNDAY
APRIL 20TH

As a reminder, we do not offer make-up lessons for dates that are marked as closed on our studio calendar.

Although we are sad to see Danny (one of our fantastic guitar, violin and rock band instructors) relocate to Southern California this month, we are excited to welcome on board additional instructors Swen and Cory, who many of you have met as substitute teachers. It's exciting to have so much growth - THANK YOU!

And now the fun stuff...

"America has only three cities: New York, San Francisco, and New Orleans. Everywhere else is Cleveland."  - Tennessee Williams

We encourage you to use Mardi Gras as an excuse to listen to some New Orleans music! Due to the unique collision of so many cultures in this port city, New Orleans is not only the birthplace of Jazz, but also home to some of the greatest soul, funk, blues, country and R&B music of all time. Check out: Louis Armstrong, The Meters, Galactic, Professor Longhair, Rebirth Brass Band, Allen Toussaint, Dr. John, The Neville Brothers, Trombone Shorty, James Andrews, Harry Connick, Jr., Irma Thomas, Lee Dorsey, John Boutle, Wynton Marsalis...
Student of the Month
Congratulations to Ella King!
Ella will receive (along with priceless glory and endless bragging rights) a $30 Gift Certificate to Music Time Academy, as well as a $20 gift card to the Cinema West Theater in Livermore!

Instrument: Piano
Teacher: Michael Solomon
Age: 12
Grade: 6
School: East Avenue
Student at Music Time Since: 2010
Hobbies (besides practicing):  Ballet, Choir, Reading

Although "Student of the Month" is currently our only formal recognition, if we offered an award for "Hardest Working Student," Ella King would be a likely contender. Ella has studied piano at Music Time for over four years - and we have witnessed her growth firsthand in her stellar performances at multiple Music Time Academy concerts. This past Christmas season she performed in the Nutcracker at the Bankhead Theater for the sixth time. She has also made several appearances this year in performance with her school choir. Ella is also a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society.

Not simply excelling in the arts, Ella recently won first place in the Livermore School District Spelling Bee (4th through 6th grade age group), and is currently working to complete several Bat Mitzvah projects. Keep up the great work, Ella!

Do you know a current Music Time Academy student with a newsworthy musical story or accomplishment from the past month that should be featured? If so, please fill out our online nomination form by following this link:  STUDENT OF THE MONTH NOMINATION FORM
Teacher Feature

For March, we would like to feature Swen Hendrickson, a piano, guitar, bass, drum and ukulele instructor who has recently joined us for a regular teaching day, after substitute teaching with us in the past.

Like many young students that come to us at Music Time Academy, Swen's first introduction to music education was piano lessons (at the age of 5). After years of piano, Swen changed his musical focus to bass, and by age 12, he was playing with various rock bands and school ensembles. As a bassist, Swen continued on to study music at Northwestern University in Chicago, where he earned a Music minor in Jazz Studies, with a focus on Upright Bass.

Since his return to the Bay Area after college, Swen has been working as both a music instructor and freelancing bassist.  As a teacher, he strives to focus on students' specific musical goals. "But, there are some general skills that I think all music students should be working on," says Swen. "These include: having a good ear, having good rhythm and feel, being able to read, and understanding basic music theory." Swen aims to constantly challenge students and push them to improve, while balancing the more difficult and challenging aspects with the fun and playful sides of music that can help motivate students to stick with it. As a music-maker of over two decades, Swen obviously knows a little bit about what it means to sick with music! Still actively performing on a regular basis, Swen can currently be seen playing music across the Bay Area (and beyond) with the groups Muncie, O Presidente, and Berel Alexander and the Make Moves.
