WACA Hosts President Poroshenko - March 30 

Dear Colleagues and Friends: 

On behalf of the WACA National Board of Directors, we invite you to attend a special event at the U.S. Capitol on Wednesday, March 30.

It is a privilege and an honor that the World Affairs Councils of America has been selected to host an address by His Excellency Petro Poroshenko, President of Ukraine
  
The WACA program will be held in the Congressional Auditorium and features: a general reception at 5:30 PM; President Poroshenko's address and Q&A moderated by WACA President and CEO Bill Clifford at 7:00-8:00 PM; and a VIP reception for 1918 Society members at 8:00 PM.

Preceding the program is a public forum, "Ukraine's Ongoing Battle for Freedom," organized by the U.S.-Ukraine Foundation and WACA. The forum starts at 1:30 PM, also in the Congressional Auditorium, at the U.S. Capitol Visitor Center.

Our program co-hosts are:  U.S.-Ukraine Business Council;  United States Institute of Peace; Ukrainian Congress Committee of America; Winner Group USA/Ukraine and Mr. John Hynansky; U.S.-Ukraine Foundation, and the Congressional Ukraine Caucus. We are grateful for the support of our partners and for the cooperation of The Embassy of Ukraine.

2016 Spring Leadership Meeting

The World Affairs Councils of America is delighted to invite Member Council executives, staff, and board members to the 2016 
Spring Leadership Meeting . As those of you who have attended past meetings in Atlanta, San Francisco, New York, Chicago and Denver know, the program provides a unique, concentrated opportunity to network with fellow Council leaders and discuss best practices, covered in a variety of workshops.

The World Affairs Council of Greater Houston will host this year's meeting, starting with a Welcome Reception on Thursday evening, March 17, at the home of Dr. Stephen Kramer, CEO of Fabre-Kramer Pharmaceuticals and a Houston Council board member. A guest speaker on the global oil market will be announced soon.

June Leadership Mission to Israel 

The World Affairs Councils of America is pleased to announce that the America-Israel Friendship League will host a WACA Leadership Mission to Israel during June 2-10, 2016

The Leadership Mission will be comprised of an AIFL escort, WACA President Bill Clifford, and  up to 14 delegates from the Council network. 

This unique trip to Israel will focus on a variety of contemporary issues, including Middle East regional affairs, Israeli politics and diplomacy, counter-terrorism, immigration and refugees, innovation and entrepreneurship (alternative energy, IT, health care), and religious diversity. WAC Upstate - Our Newest Member Council 

On behalf of the WACA Board of Directors and the national Council network, we are thrilled to welcome   World Affairs Council Upstate of  South Carolina  as our  newest member organization. 

Join us in congratulating Executive Director Tracie Frese and her team on this milestone! (Some of you may have met Tracie at WACA's 2015 National Conference in DC.) 

Established in 1997, Upstate International strives to empower people and businesses of all nations to thrive in the Upstate by connecting them through programs, events, and initiatives that foster the dynamic exchange of international cultures and ideas. Upstate International is joining the World Affairs Councils of America network to further expand its outreach to individuals and communities, and to engage globally-minded South Carolinians directly with each other and with elected officials, civic leaders, and professionals from around the world. 
Cover to Cover Author Series 

Cover to Cover  in March will present New York Times bestselling author Clyde Prestowitz   on his new book Japan Restored: How Japan Can Reinvent Itself and Why This Is Important for America and the World, on  Tuesday, March 15, at 2:00-2:30 PM ET


Prestowitz is founder and President of the Economic Strategy Institute. He has played key roles in achieving congressional passage of NAFTA and in shaping the final content of the Uruguay Round, as well as providing the intellectual basis for current U.S. trade policies toward Japan, China, and Korea. He is the author of many books including  Trading Places (1988) which  revolutionized the thinking about Japan's economic miracle and its relationship with the United States.

Spotlight on Turkey 2016

The  2016 Spotlight on Turkey program , conducted in partnership with the  Turkish Cultural Foundation , was launched this month with the selection of 10 World Affairs Councils. 

With a Teachers Workshop in the spring, a Teachers Study Tour in the summer, and public cultural programs in the fall, Spotlight on Turkey emphasizes classroom learning and public education about Turkey and its contributions to the global community.  More Information

Minnesota International Center ha announced that from March 1 its new name is Global Minnesota. President Carol Engebretson Byrne, her board and staff, and members and supporters recently  celebrated the organization's 60th anniversary. The new name better represents the programs, events, and connections Global Minnesota creates, as well as communities, organizations, and individuals who share in its work

Global Minnesota is committed to highlighting the world's most pressing issues that demand the global audience's attention, and providing the same high-quality and meaningful programs that connect and engage Minnesotans with the world.
WAC Oregon Names New President 

Derrick Olsen Takes the Helm in Portland

The World Affairs Council of Oregon is pleased to announce the appointment of Derrick Olsen as its new president. He succeeds Maria Wulff, who is retiring after 20 years of service to the Council. Read the press release 

Olsen was born and raised in Oregon, and  has extensive international experience. After having served 13 years as a Foreign Service Officer for the U.S. Department o f State in Latin America, Asia and Washington, DC, he managed international trade and investment issues at Business Oregon (the Oregon Business Development Department). Olse n is leaving his current post of Vice President for  Regional Strategy at Greater  Portland Inc and describes his appointment with WAC Oregon  as "a dream come true."

The Santa Fe Council on International Relations  is seeking an experienced, mission-driven, and innovative, Executive Director to secure major gifts and grants and expand relationships with donors, volunteers, and community leaders, increasing the Council's ability to engage the community in world affairs.  This is a salaried, full-time position based in New Mexico's capital, Santa Fe.
