Hargrave PG Basketball named 2016 National Prep Champions!
Hargrave Parent eNewsletter
"My own definition of leadership is this: The capacity and the will to rally men and women to a common purpose and the character which inspires confidence. "
-- General Montgomery
Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

March is off to a great start. Last night Hargrave's Postgraduate Basketball team won the National Prep Championship. Coach A.W. Hamilton did a great job guiding his players to this coveted place in postgraduate basketball. The team maintained a 47-1 season record and Cadet De'Riante Jenkins was recognized as the tournament MVP. I want to thank all the Hargrave alumni and supported that showed up to watch the game in New Haven, Connecticut. I know we were appreciated on the court.

Coffman and Cook advance during the Promenade.
The 2016 Military Ball was a tremendous success on Saturday, with many Cadets and their dates enjoying an evening of elegance and friendship. Coach William Eberly and his support team, ( Mr. Will Moran; Mrs. Deana Olsen; Cadet Liam Rafizadeh; Mrs. Abby Silva; Ms. Reilly Thayer; Mrs. Kerry Watts), did a great job with the Great Gatsby themed event. Additionally, SgtMaj. Harold Hofer and SgtMaj. Mike Payne did were outstanding as host and management.

Congratulations are in order to Miss Cassie Coffman of Norfolk, Virginia. She was named Queen of the ball after the formal promenade. Her escort, Cadet Samuel Cook, was just as surprised with the win as our newest Queen. All the young ladies were stunning, and our Cadets looks spectacular. The Cadet Sabre Club did a excellent job this year.

Many parents and family members took full advantage of Hargrave's second semester parent/instructor conferences. Hargrave faculty and staff reported good engagement. Please keep in mind that your son's instructor is available to address your concerns and work toward a common goal with you son. Email remains the best way to get a conversation going with Hargrave employees. Phone calls and meetings can follow from any email request.

The Winter varsity Sports Banquet was held last Friday. It was quite a season for all of our winter sports teams. Basketball, rifle, swimming and wrestling were solid performers and tough competitors in each of their competitions. There were numerous individual and team highlights, too. As good as this season was, the 2016-2017 Winter season is looking great.

Six NCO Cadets had a great opportunity to attend the VMI Leadership Conference this week. The theme, "Ethical Dilemmas in the Digital Age," challenged all participants, including a majority who were not in high school, to understand the role of ethics, honor and leadership in a technologically developed society.

It is re-enrollment time. Hargrave's Tuition for Life (TFL) is a smart way to maintain your son's tuition at initial enrollment levels. There is never a tuition increase for parents using this program.

Hargrave also has a Parent Referral Incentive Program with is capable of dramatically lowering a Cadet's tuition for the main academic year. Check out both programs at the Tuition Incentives page (https://www.hargrave.edu/admissions/tuition/tuition-incentives) I strongly encourage parents to use both programs.

Now that the 2016 Military Ball has concluded, the Corps of Cadets is now looking forward to Spring Break. It will be exciting to have your young man home, but please be attentive to Hargrave's check-out procedures.

Best regards,

Don Broome

Band and Choir Festival Participants
Hargrave Cadets attended the 40th Annual Military School and Band Choir Festival, February 26-28, 2016. The Festival is an annual, competitive event, rotated among several military schools as hosts. Valley Forge Military Academy and College hosted this year's festival.

Director Emeritus Colonel John R. Bourgeois, USMC (Ret.), The Military School Band Association, served as both mentor and conductor during the event. Colonel Bourgeois was the 25th Director of "The President's Own" United States Marine Band.

"You all should feel proud of yourselves for the amazing progress made in a short amount of time," Bourgeois said. "I was very pleased with the end result and concert."

Three Hargrave Cadets were honored to perform under Bourgeois during the festival. They include: Cadet Trey Barnes (percussion) of Durham, North Carolina; Cadet Dylan Moss (trumpet) of Danville, Virginia; and Cadet Kevin Pedersen (trumpet) of Mercer Island, Washington. The festival also included a performance by the United States Navy Band 'Country Current.'

Hargrave Dual Enrollment Courses

Dual Enrollment (DE) Courses at Hargrave Military Academy have changed to improve the options and value of college credit course offerings for our Cadets.

Hargrave has shifted our dual enrollment program to Richard Bland College of William and Mary. Hargrave Juniors, Seniors, and Post Graduates have the option of taking Hargrave college-level courses as either dual enrollment or, in some cases, Advanced Placement (AP).

Dual enrollment courses are taught by Hargrave faculty members who are qualified Richard Bland College of William and Mary adjunct faculty members. Cadets prequalify for the DE option by their demonstrated excellent performance in the courses and the recommendation of their teacher. Dual enrollment offers these Cadets an excellent start on their college education. Benefits include the following:
  • Receiving college academic credit and grades for the DE course
  • Establishing a college transcript to transfer those credits to other colleges and universities
  • Hargrave's transcripts used to support college and scholarship applications and for graduation reflect that the Cadet's enrollment in a college-level DE course
  • Enrolling in college-credit courses is advantageous in applying to selective colleges and universities.
  • Dual Enrollment courses give Cadets a head start on their college requirements and may exempt them from having to take similar courses once they enter college.
  • In return for the use of Hargrave's qualified faculty and facilities Hargrave's agreement with Richard Bland College of William and Mary may include a waiver of tuition and registration fees Cadets for the courses taught at Hargrave meeting their enrollment requirements
Dual Enrollment Courses also meet Hargrave graduation requirements.

Richard Bland College of William and Mary courses and credits currently approved for HMA students to take here on our campus include:
  • ENGL 101 - Writing and Research.....3 credit hours
  • ENGL 102 - Introduction to Literary Genres.....3 credit hours
  • CHEM 101/L - General Chemistry I with Lab.....4 credit hours
  • CHEM 102/L - General Chemistry II with Lab.....4 credit hours
Advanced Placement course selections remain an option for Hargrave Cadets. AP courses give Cadets the experience of taking college-level courses while earning a high school credit. Successful completion of the AP Exam may result in the awarding of college credits. Hargrave's current AP course offerings include include the following:
  • AP Calculus AB
  • AP Physics I
  • AP United States History
  • AP English Literature and Language
  • AP Chemistry
  • Others -- Students who demonstrate strength in other subject areas may request to take an AP exam by special permission.
For more information on Dual Enrollment or Advanced Placement course planning for your Cadet please contact Dean Walter Sullivan at [email protected].

The National Beta Club Tapping
Ham, Kiesnowski, Soles, Stewart, Thompson J., Thompson W., Wilkie, Zheng

Hargrave Beta Inductees
The Hargrave chapter of the National Beta Club held their Spring tapping on Tuesday, March 8, 2016 during assembly. Eight Cadets were inducted.

The National Beta Club promotes academic excellence, character, service and leadership among elementary and secondary school students. It rewards meritorious achievement and encourages students to continue in their education.

Induction into the National Beta Club requires that each student achieve and maintain a stringent set of criteria. At Hargrave, Cadets in grades 9-12 must be working towards an Advanced Studies Diploma, be involved in two extra-curricular activities, such as sports, band or clubs during the Academic year, and remain on either the President's or Dean's list for three six week periods. In addition, the Beta Club looks for strong leadership, character and excellent deportment in each candidate.

Hargrave's 7th and 8th grade students must meet the same requirements as all other Beta Club members, but are excluded from the Advanced Studies Diploma track due to their grade level.

Upon graduation, each Cadet will receive a special Beta Club seal on their diploma. They're also eligible for National Beta Club scholarships. There are roughly five million current and former National Beta Club members.

"The Hargrave Chapters of the National Junior Beta Club and the National Senior Beta Club are pleased to induct these new members and look forward to the contributions they will make to our clubs, school, and community," Mrs. Donna Cooper, a Hargrave Beta Club sponsor, said.

The following students earned Beta Club recognition for their performance during the first semester of the 2015/2016 Academic year.

Hargrave's Beta Club welcomes the following new Beta Club Cadets. New Junior Beta Club members include:

David Kiesnowski of Appleton, Wisconsin; Brian and Meredith Kiesnowski
