Training Programs
Aquatic Supervisor Training
Hosted by: Town of Cochrane
Aquatic Supervisor Training provides education to support aquatic supervisors in respect to the supervision of deck and front line staff. Course content includes topics such as training, supervision, safe facility operation, and risk management.
Tuesday June 6 - 9:00am - 5:00pm
Wednesday June 7- 9:00am - 5:00pm
Prerequisite: Current National Lifeguard (any option) and Lifesaving Instructor or higher (need not be current).

Aquatic Management Training
Hosted by: Town of Cochrane
Aquatic Management Training is recommended for those with limited aquatic background and is an excellent refresher for experienced aquatic leaders. The participants gain the skills, knowledge and applied practical experience in the areas of risk management, legislation and operating practices that dictate the current operating standards of aquatic facilities in Alberta and Northwest Territories. Identification of hazards and non-conforming aspects of aquatic facility operations are covered, as well as, responsibilities of the aquatic manager, facility design, program design and operation, safe water management, managing risk, aquatic emergencies, and incident management.

Lifesaving Society Leadership Courses
The Lifesaving Society hosts several leadership courses annually.  Please register for an upcoming leadership course.
Instructor Trainer (IT) Clinics
Who should attend?
Candidates must complete the Course/Clinic Application Form (also available on the Society website) and forward to the Society's office for approval prior to registering for clinic.
The Lifesaving Society Instructor Trainer Clinic will prepare candidates to teach and evaluate Lifesaving Society leadership programs.  During the 20 hour clinic, candidates will learn program model design, the competency based leadership model, course planning, evaluation of instructor candidates, how to facilitate peer teaching presentations and provide instructor candidate feedback.  Following completion of the generic Instructor Trainer Clinic, successful candidates will complete an apprenticeship in the leadership program streams in which they hold the prerequisites.
Prerequisite(s): Application, leadership experience, current Lifesaving Instructor.

Northwest Territories Seasonal Aquatic Supervisors - Now Accepting Applications
With the start of the New Year, many students and adventure-seekers are beginning to think about their summer plans. The NWT Recreation & Parks Association (NWTRPA) has announced that the Seasonal Aquatic Supervisor Recruitment for the summer of 2017 is officially open!
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Lifesaving Society Swim Instructor/Red Cross Water Safety Instructor
  • National Lifeguard or Shallow Water National Lifeguard/Bronze Cross (depending on pool class)
  • First Aid and CPR-C
  • 18 years of age
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Recreation programming experience
  • Pool maintenance and manual chemical application experience
  • Experience with seasonal pool start-up, end of season shutdown and general maintenance (Pool Operations Level 1 an Asset)
Employment Duration:
Depending on the location of the community (southern or northern NWT) and their needs, most communities strive to:
  • OPEN: Mid-June (looking for an Aquatic Supervisor to start somewhere around Mid to Late May)
  • CLOSE: Mid to Late August (due to weather changes)
To Apply:
*Special Note: Although many communities will help with travel and accommodation, it is up to the applicant and community to work together to negotiate terms of coverage of costs. Salaries are also negotiable.
DB Perks Scholarship
Through generous support from DB Perks & Associates Ltd, the Society is able to offer the annual DB Perks Leadership Scholarship Program.  The Lifesaving Society awards up to four (4) leadership scholarships each year. These scholarships (valued at $250 each) are to be used by recipients to advance their leadership capacity in delivering Lifesaving Society education and training programs in Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Lifesaving Sport
Alberta and Northwest Territories Pool Lifesaving Championships and Junior Games - Starts Friday!
Alberta and Northwest Territories Lifesaving Sport athletes are set to compete at the 2017 Alberta and Northwest Territories Pool Lifesaving Championships and Junior Games from March 17-19 at the Max Bell Regional Aquatic Centre in Lethbridge, Alberta.  Please see the electronic program for more detail and the schedule of events.
YMCA of Northern Alberta Riptide Riders Interclub Lifesaving Society Sanctioned Competition
The YMCA of Northern Alberta Riptide Riders hosted their second annual interclub meet on March 3, 2017.  The meet was hosted by the Don Wheaton YMCA in Edmonton.  A big shout out to the meet manager, Shandy Dickinson, chief referee Rahul Pinisetti, and Shauna JacksonCrabb for your leadership.  A total of 33 competitors participated in this event.
