Summer like conditions at Hargrave!

Dear Parents, Grandparents and Guardians,

March is living up to its reputation and provided Chatham with wind and rain this week. Otherwise, the Cadets continue to take full advantage of the warmer weather on campus. I think everyone is happy to be back outside.

A.W. Hamilton
Hamilton
Congratulations to Coach A.W. Hamilton for being named the Next Up Recruits 'Post-Grad' National Coach of the Year! This is special. Voting for Coach of the Year occurred prior to the Hargrave Postgraduate Basketball win at the National Prep Championship. Voting came from a number a NCAA D1 college coaches and the media. It's obvious this is a well deserved recognition! Our PGBB Team's record of 47-1 final record says it all. Or as Cadet De'Riante Jenkins aptly put it, "...we're not 47-1. We're 47 and Won. We won, so that loss doesn't count anymore!"

Interim grades for the 5th marking period are due on Friday. This is a vital grading period for Cadets working toward a President's List, Dean's List or President's Commendation list recognition at the 2016 Mother's Day parade. If you would like to be a parent taking the field, please encourage your son to take advantage of Hargrave faculty and educational resources. Sometimes all it takes is a little nudge from parents.

Hargrave's annual Eye of the Tiger (EOT) competition is this weekend. While Hargrave stresses leadership and teamwork, EOT is focused on the individual. It's single purpose is to bring out the best in a young man under difficult conditions. Over the last few years, I've had Cadets tell me, "Sir, this is the hardest thing I've ever done." The reward is greater self-confidence and a knowledge they are able to do more than they ever thought possible. While some young men won't finish, all that attempt the EOT will be better for the experience. I look forward to seeing each Cadet's effort.

Boarding school life offers many opportunities for a young man. One big opportunity is the ability to interact and have shared experiences with individuals different from themselves. The Hargrave Corps of Cadets includes a wide range of individuals from six different continents (only missing Antarctica), every race, religion, ethnic origin and color. Additionally, there are numerous economic and geographic factors that can make up a Cadet's background.

Often, Cadets of different backgrounds find themselves living together on the same barracks, in the same room. This is a good thing-- learning to live with (and get along with) someone unlike yourself is one of the key lessons involved in the military school/boarding experience. It forces both roommates to accommodate, support and appreciate the other individual. There is a lot of learning that occurs in a barracks room. Lifetime bridges are forged between our young men and between cultures, and a great understanding and empathy develops in the Cadets. This is a good thing.

Respect ( this month's character theme) and tolerance are vital tools when interacting with others. They are important in schools, communities and board rooms. Racially, culturally and ethnically, the world is getting smaller. It is important for our Cadets to learn how to cooperate and strive in this new environment.

Following Chapel on Tuesday morning, I reminded our Cadets about all of the points in the three paragraphs immediately above. Additionally, I let them know what I always hear, "But, Sir we were just having fun!" Someone inevitably crosses someone else's personal line. Then, everyone ends up in my office. I do not want them there under those circumstances. Hargrave is an opportunity to learn-grow-mature, and it should always be treated as such.

Spring Break is quickly approaching. It begins at 12:30 p.m. Thursday, March 24th and concludes 5:00 p.m. April 3rd. Hargrave's normal check-out and check-in procedures apply.

Best regards,

Don Broome

St. Patrick's Day Infirmary Contest
Mize

Mize
Mize
Can you guess? Nurse Trish Baker RN, Hargrave's Head Infirmary nurse, is fond of guessing games, and the Cadets enjoy her challenges. To celebrate St. Patrick's Day, the Cadets were challenged to guess the number of marshmallows from a container of Lucky Charms cereal. In addition to the simple guess, many Cadets employ a wide range of techniques to determine the answer. It is great fun.

The winner for the St. Patrick's Day challenge is Cadet John Mize, who correctly guessed 125 marshmallows in the Lucky Charms container. The correct answer was 125. Mize won a bag of chocolate and the container of cereal.

Today new begins the count for a Jelly Beans challenge. I closest guess wins a giant bunny!

Loney and Harrell
Loney and Harrell
On Saturday, March 12, 2016, Mrs. Barbara Loney and MAJ Scott Roach took the Cadets to the Charlotte Hornets vs. Houston Rockets game. The group scored a great package deal, then the fun started.

The evening began with front row seats for the Pre-Game Shoot-around. Seeing the group, Houston Rockets player Montrezl Harrell '12 came over and gave Mrs. Loney a hug. Then, the Cadets learned that he was a former Hargrave Cadet. The Cadets went crazy. Harrell enjoyed catching up and talking with the Cadets.

The group had great lower bowl seats for the actual game, which was a good contest. Charlotte lead the whole game and eventually blew out the Rockets in the end. It was the Hornet's 11th win in a row, and they are looking good for a NBA Playoff berth. Before the night was over, Harrell had a monster dunk. He is known for monster dunks.

On Sunday, March 13, 2016, Ms. Reilley Thayer opened Hargrave's campus paintball course. The main course is wooded, and filled with all types of forts and bunkers. Cadet Christian Clark was noted for his skills, and was selected to be the 'zombie' in the 'Zombies scenario' game. Basically if Christian shot you, you joined his crew. Eventually there are more zombies than humans, and the last surviving human is the winner. It was a great game.

IGTH

When it come to deciding on your gift to Hargrave, please know that those $10, $25, $50 and $100 gifts do add up and do help a tremendous amount!

Why Give?
The boarding school landscape has changed a lot over the past 10 plus years. There are more and more smaller academies that have been started which means it's a much more competitive market.

With that being said, IGTH allows Hargrave to hire and keep the best faculty, staff and coaches. Your support is needed more than ever!

Our goal is to raise participation in all constituencies within the Hargrave family, ultimately reaching 1,000 donors for the Academy's fiscal year ending May 31. That will be a 100% increase from the year before but less than our all time high of 1,600 donors. To make a gift you can go to the link below.
