WSOC Gala 2017 theme revealed!
Time to dust off those fairy wings and flowing medieval finery! On Monday, February 27, Kim Eijpen and Tara Cannon -  co-chairs of our WSOC Gala & Auction 2017 -  surprised our community with Renaissance-clad stilt walkers and faerie cakes to celebrate the theme reveal: "A Midsummer Night's Dream."

This year's gala takes place on May 13th at the beautiful Environmental Nature Center in Newport Beach. Enlivened with ethereal decor, the event will feature a silent and live auction, delicious buffet dinner, specialty beverages, live music and DJ, a dessert station tucked into the woods, photo booth and more!

Do you want to buy an Early Bird gala ticket, purchase a sponsorship, place an ad in our program, or donate an auction item? Here is everything you'll need:

Auction item suggestions: experiences, lessons, handmade items are all very much in demand! Share your skills, your time, your talents, your creations!

Early bird ticket sales are available today through April 2 for $115! Ticket sales after this date are $135. Click here to buy your tickets or tables today- space is limited and this event will sell out.

Please contact Tara Cannon or Kim Eijpen  if you're interested in volunteering or have questions about the event, Carolyn Gregg for ticket, sponsorship and live auction donations, and Alyssa Hamilton regarding silent auction donations and program ads.

Top 10 Reasons to Love WSOC High School: A Student's Perspective

1. A student's voice, opinion, and needs are always taken into account. The teachers are genuinely invested in the student's educational and psychological well being, and each and every one is always open to discuss the learning process and to supplement that with whatever the student needs to succeed.

2. Classes are a diverse range of subjects that, while each is a unique experience, are arranged so that they coincide with pertinent information in other classes, giving students a holistic education, and the ability to look at a problem or subject from many angles; for instance, having background knowledge of Middle Eastern history is helpful when considering the ancient number systems which our economy is based upon.

3. The learning encourages a continuation of skills that will be useful in later life. From the instruments we learn to play, to the languages that we study, everything is presented as a tool that can be cultivated to benefit our minds and bodies, and to expand our thinking about the world and our ability to interact with the people in it.

4. The block system allows for full focus on a subject, and that is what creates a rhythm of work in the classroom. This in turn brings about an opportunity for the students to dive deeply into a culture or concept, and ensures that each student will fully understand what they are studying.

Annual Giving challenge: earn rewards for your classroom!

Great news! We have an anonymous donor who would like our school community reach the $100,000 with 100% participation goal. This donor is offering to match up to $15,000 for all gifts made in March. Today we stand at $70,000 with 60% school wide participation.

This is an exciting gift for our school community! When we complete this goal it will be the first time in the school's history that we have raised $100,000 in Annual Giving. Our community has consistently set significant goals and accomplished them, which advances the wonderful educational environment our children benefit from today. Annual Giving is the cornerstone of our fundraising program. We ask each attending family to make a tax deductible gift, in addition to paying tuition, to support our comprehensive program.

Thank you for making your gift to our community. If you haven't had an opportunity to make a gift please go online or stop by the office. To meet our goal we're offering three unique incentives:
  • For Early Childhood classes - if all four classes achieve 100% participation the teachers will receive $1,000 to be used in the Early Childhood program.
  • For Grades - The first class to achieve 100% will earn $1,000 towards their class trip fund, the second class to reach 100% will receive $400 and all remaining classes will receive $100 all towards their class trip fund.
  • For High School - If all four grades achieve 100% they will receive $1,000 towards a bonding event.

Grade 8 Projects

We are excited to announce our Grade 8 projects are coming up March 27 - 30th. Our intrepid eighth graders have been working with a mentor for several months in order to create a detailed presentation about a subject of their choosing- this year we have subjects ranging from glass blowing to renewable energy and desalination to native and survival skills. It is their first time presenting a project alone in front of a school and community audience, and it's a big deal! Come out and support them later this month!

WSOC vs. WSOC

WSOC boy ' s basketball recruited enough players to have two league teams this season - a senior team, and a team of juniors, sophomores, and freshman. Early in the season, they were scheduled to oppose each other in a game. It was a game of constant motion;  the boys were sprinting across the court or jumping to intercept balls endlessly. There was rarely a moment where the court was not a blur of blue and white clad players! The camaraderie of the players (having known each other both on and off the court, and up until the last game they all played on the same team) created a unique tension and interest in the game that was captivating to watch.

The strength of the senior team derived from exquisite teamwork. The ease of passing amongst the players and support they offered one another was a clear indication of many hours spent playing together at WSOC. However, the younger team played with equal effort and enthusiasm. Their defensive skills were impressive, and they made a few 3-point shots. The seniors gained the upper hand early in the first quarter, and maintained it throughout the game - the final score was 38 to 21.
