Beacon Hill Receives Beautify Boston Grant

The Beacon Hill Civic Association is proud to announce that the City of Boston recently awarded two Beautify Boston Grants to projects on Beacon Hill. The City awarded the BHCA $10,000 to assist with the purchase and installation of plantings in the tree pits along Charles Street. The BHCA has undertaken a project to improve the neighborhood's main commercial street by enhancing the pits surrounding the street's 57 trees in honor of the BHCA's 90th anniversary.

A second grant was awarded to the Phillips Street Play Area in the amount of $7,750. These funds will help with the purchase and installation of additional permanent fencing around the Play Area's flower beds, located at 17 Phillips Street.

BHCA would like to thank Boston Parks and Recreation Department Commissioner Toni Pollak and Arborist Greg Mosman for their support of these projects.

7 Smith Court to Come Before BHCA's Zoning and Licensing Committee

The owner/occupants of a single-family home at 7 Smith Court will appear before the Beacon Hill Civic Association's Zoning and Licensing Committee, to present a proposal to construct a head house. This would allow walk-up access to a re-built roof deck on the 2 -story building. The committee will meet Wednesday, March 6 at 7:30pm at 74 Joy Street

The head house, which is not visible from a public way, would accommodate a staircase and landing area to allow access to the roof deck via a sliding glass door. According to ISD, it would add an additional 48 square feet to the building, thus requiring a FAR variance. The applicant states that the proposed head house will provide safe access to the roof deck and will not interfere with the light and views of neighboring homes.

Neighbors are encouraged to attend the meeting. If you are unable to attend but would like to express an opinion, please call (617.227.1922) or send an email to the BHCA office (MaryLee.Halpin@bhcivic.orgprior to the meeting. Additional information regarding design plans and updates on this matter are posted on the BHCA website at www.bhcivic.org.

Street Sweeping Expansion

The expanded street sweeping scheduled to begin Friday, March 1, 2013 has been postponed due to roadway conditions. The Public Works Department (PWD) will re-evaluate conditions to begin posted sweeping and enforcement for the week of March 11, 2013. Starting this year, PWD has extended street sweeping in Beacon Hill to run from March 1st through December 31st. Previously, the street sweeping program ran from April 1st to November 30th. This expansion will provide cleaner streets for Beacon Hill residents and help reduce rodent food sources.

Residents should look for signs indicating the new street sweeping schedule. Residents are encouraged to subscribe for NO-TOW on the City's web site to receive email alerts the night before their streets are scheduled for sweeping.

The BHCA is Looking for New Committee Members

Do you value being a member of the BHCA? Would you consider expanding your involvement by becoming a committee member? The BHCA is currently looking for potential committee members interested in sharing their ideas for preserving and enhancing the quality of life on Beacon Hill.

Each committee operates uniquely (some meet monthly, some quarterly, some on a seasonal or ad-hoc basis) and committees are always interested in talking with people looking to become involved. With so many areas to choose from, you are guaranteed to find a committee that aligns with your interests. For a complete list of committees as well as detailed responsibilities, click here.

In particular, we are currently looking for individuals to join our Membership and Special Events Committees as we start our membership drive in April and look forward to the Evening on the Esplanade and Neighborhood Block Party this summer.

If you are interested in serving as a committee member o, please contact the BHCA office by emailing  info@bhcivic.org  or call 617-227-1922.
