Understanding In Home Care

While many people are thrust into the world of in home care when something unexpected happens, others include it in their long-term health care planning discussions with professionals and loved ones. Regardless of how you've arrived at this point, understanding what in home care can offer and how to go about choosing the in-home care company that's right for you can be overwhelming. There are a few boxes to check when searching for a company. Are they licensed and insured? Trustworthy? Highly recommended?

For a complete list of questions to ask a potential caregiving company and services offered, visit our blog!

Shop the Season

If you want to make sure you are eating the freshest fruits & veggies, be sure to shop for what's in season (rather than what's been shipped thousands of miles to your store!). For the next few months, fill your cart with broccoli, asparagus, pineapple, mango, strawberries, honeydew and collards! Fruits & veggies should be at the top of your list of things to fill your plate with--they are loaded with fiber, antioxidants, disease-fighting compounds, and are a natural, healthy way to satisfy your sweet tooth!

Spring is in the Air...

Well, maybe not yet, but it will be here before we know it! This is a great time of year--the days are getting longer (Daylight Savings Time starts March 8th!), the air gets warmer, and the grass gets greener. People have the urge to spend time outside and soak up the sun, plant a garden, go for walks, and do a little "spring cleaning." This can be cleaning in the literal sense--break out the vacuum attachments and household cleaners--or in the more figurative sense. If you've slipped from your healthy resolutions, kick start your resolve now that delicious fruits & veggies are back in season and the weather is more conducive for outdoor activities. As a family caregiver, it might be the perfect time to assess your priorities--are you getting enough sleep, how is your health and stress level, do you need to ask for more help? Most importantly, are you able to connect with your loved one emotionally, or has the physical and mental exhaustion that come with providing constant care created a barrier in your relationship? Our dependable, compassionate caregivers can help ease the burden so that you can reconnect with yourself and loved one. Visit our website  to find out how we can help!
March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month

older_couple.jpg Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common cancer in the United States and the second leading cause of death from cancer. Colorectal cancer affects all racial and ethnic groups and is most often found in people ages 50 and older.

The best way to prevent colorectal cancer is to get screened regularly starting at age 50. There are often no signs or symptoms of colorectal cancer - that's why it's so important to get screened.

Are You At Risk?

People over age 50 have the highest risk of colorectal cancer. You may also be at higher risk if you are African American, smoke, or have a family history of colorectal cancer.

Everyone can take these healthy steps to help prevent colorectal cancer:

  • Get screened starting at age 50.
  • Quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke.
  • Get plenty of physical activity and eat healthy.

For more information, visit the PreventCancer.org website.
