A Note from the School Council

Assalamualaikum Dear Parents,

This year we have a had an unusually high number of weather-related school closings. School leadership considers a number of factors before making the determination to close the schools, among them severe cold and heavy snowfall.  The health and safety of our students, staff and community are our greatest priority.

The MCCA School Council was pleased to see the wonderful turnout for the school's Annual Dinner on Saturday, February 21, 2015. It is uplifting and encouraging to see how far the school has come as we review the our growing list of accolades and accomplishments.  A quarter century after the school's founding, we have added a new facility, the Skokie Campus, and, alhamdulillah, through the support of the village, mosque and school leadership, together with school staff and parents, the transition from a school to a school system, has been successful and seamless. Thank you to all who donated to the school.

MCCA introduced a wonderful, new tradition at this year's dinner- the presentation of the Golden Crescent Awards. The award will be given to one or two, depending on nominations/qualifications, MCCA alumni each year who have excelled in their post-MCCA endeavors.  The recipients are determined by majority vote by the MCCA Council based on nominations submitted each year before the date of our Annual Dinner. We are so pleased for Bakir Dzananovic and Asal Wahdan, this year's recipients and first winners of this prestigious award, who each accepted the award with great humility and class. It is a pleasure to have the opportunity to recognize our students' achievements and we look forward to continuing to do so. Our students' success is our success.

Please try to attend MCC General Body meetings. This is the best way to learn where we are as a community and what we are doing. It is also a time to have our concerns heard.  If you have any questions or concerns please contact Farisa Hussain:  [email protected]

Quran Competition - May 13, 12015
Help Your Child Prepare

Mrs. Saleh - Middle School Science

"For every action, there's an equal and opposite reaction!" Our 8th grade students have been learning all about this concept in science class.  We just completed our unit on Newton's Laws and the final project was to launch their student-made vehicles.
Mrs. Malik - Preschool

Preschool students have been learning about opposites. One of the activities we did that the children really enjoyed was coloring under the tables like little Michelangelo's. We placed coloring pictures under the tables and children laid down on their backs beneath the tables to color their pictures. The children also came to school in their pajamas and had a "sleepover" at school. Teachers put up a large tent and the children enjoyed story time with their stuffed animals. The Preschoolers also went back to the time of the dinosaurs as they learned what dinosaurs ate and other cool facts. They also made fossils and discovered their own dinosaurs and named them after themselves (i.e. Amina found the Aminasaurus).

Mrs. Baig - 2B

ALL ABOUT ME! Second-graders in Mrs. Baig's class are extremely busy publishing a classroom book on autobiographies! First, we learned what an autobiography is and came up with fun facts about ourselves.  Then, we went through the process of writing, such as the rough draft, editing, and final copy for our book. In reading, we also read biographies and learned the difference between autobiographies and biographiesFor President Abraham Lincoln's Birthday, we read about his life and studied why he was such an important man in history.  We noticed that he is on coins and dollar bills during math class! We also created autobiography bodies on large construction paper.  Inside each body we wrote interesting information and decorated the bodies with designs. Last, during art, we made wintery 3D snowmen out of foam.  We also made snowflakes with pipe cleaners and beads. Thank you Mrs. Nubani and all other previous parent volunteers for your time. Mrs. Baig's second-graders also enjoyed the 100th Day celebration and a field trip to a play.

Mrs. Shariff - KgA

Yay for KG-A for another month filled with lots of learning and excitement!  In reading, we have focused on different comprehension skills and strategies such as cause and effect, author's purpose, and to infer and predict.  In phonics, our students have had different types of activities that have helped them learn about the different initial consonant blends used in words. This month, our focus in writing was the concept of informative writing in which our students wrote about how they would build a snowman using transitional words.
In math, we just took our Chapter 8 assessment which dealt with tally marks, counting by tens and ones using base ten blocks.  We are continuing to work with basic addition and subtraction facts.  Both subjects, math and art, were integrated by having our students make their own "Hot Cocoa Mugs" in which they made a number story using marshmallows.

In science, we are still working on our Plants Unit.  Our students learned about the different types of plants and and the function of each part of a plant by making their own plant model.

Kids had a wonderful time on our field trip to see the play "Click Clack Moo." W e also had a blast on our 100th day of school!  Our kids had the opportunity to make their own 100th day crowns, 100 fruit loop necklaces, an opportunity to win a jar by process of estimation, a snack party, and going home with goody bags!  A special thanks to Mrs. Chabou and Mrs. Rizwan for staying and helping out.  We would also like to thank parents who brought in treats for our students.  Congratulations Khadija Pehlari, Amine Chabou, and Kareem Ismail for winning the 100th Poster Competition!

Mrs. Gomaa - 5A

5th Grade Authors on Life Cycles:

During our science unit on human and animal growth, 5th graders each did extensive research on a different animal's growth and life cycle. They then created life cycle booklets explaining the growth process of each animal using images and explanations. The kids presented their booklets and explained whether or not their animal goes through complete or incomplete metamorphosis, or direct or indirect development.

Mrs. Pathan - 4A

4th grade did an amazing job on their explorer projects. Students researched their assigned explorer, created a poster or diorama, and dressed up like the explorer during their presentation. Everyone did a great job! For science, we just started the human body systems. In groups, students are using their textbooks and public library books to research the body system that was assigned to them. Each group is researching a different system. Next week, they will present their systems: parts, functions, and other interesting facts by using their life size sample as a visual aid. Finally, a few weeks back, fourth grade went to the Chicago Jewish Day School to learn about the Jewish religion along with Sacred Heart School. After learning about Judaism and the synagogue, students broke up into groups and created poems. We have one more session at the Morton Grove campus at the end of the month along with Sacred Heart.

Miss Malik - 1A
We have had a fun-filled month.  In science, we became animal experts on an animal we selected in class.  Musa Baig's mom came in and did an animal art project with us.  The animal theme spread to our field trip too.  We watched the play "Click, Clack, Moo Cows that Type."  After the trip, we made comparisons about the book and the play.  We were also able to classify the different animals in the story into the appropriate animal groups.  We love playing with PlayDoh and were so happy to have Zaid Ansari and Bilal Rama's moms come by and help us make some for our class.  To end the month, we celebrated the 100th Day of School.  We did a variety of activities such as making estimations about how many times we can blink, clap, jump, write our names, and count to 10 in 100 seconds.  We compared our estimations to our actual numbers.  We got a bit of a workout as well doing 100 jumping jacks and running in place for one hundred seconds.  We are looking forward to more learning next month and can't wait for warmer weather, Insha'Allah! .

Mrs. Taufique - KgC
February has been a short but eventful month!  We went on a field trip to see "Click Clack Moo" and we had our 100th day of school party. We've started to learn word problems in math!  It's an exciting time.  In science, we learned all about the parts of plants and we are about to begin seed germination projects.  In reading, we are getting better and better at blending sounds and combinations into words.  We've completed all of our long vowel sounds and we are starting vowel and consonant digraphs.  On our 100th day, students dressed up as 100-year-old people.  We had a class full of grannies and grandpas.  A very special thank you to Mrs. Nazneen Ayoob for completing art projects with our students twice a month. Alhamdulillah, we are so grateful to Allah for all of our achievements.

Mrs. Khawla, Mrs. Nuhad & Mrs. Lina  - PreK Arabic

PreK-A, B & C students were so excited to get together to watch a fun and engaging movie about all the letters that they have learned in Arabic so far. We started with Alef and stopped at Saad. The students sang songs with the movie and reviewed all their vocabulary.

Mrs. Khawla, Mrs. Musa, Mrs. Qudsi - 2nd Grade Arabic

All three sections of 2nd grade listened to "Hadaya Al-Eid (Gifts of Eid)," a story told by Mrs. Rania Ibrahim, the parents of Ammar Ibrahim in 2B in the library.  One cool project we all worked on was making a Misbaha. The students put 11 gems on a string and made tasbeeh afterwards. We would like to thank Mrs. Rania Ibrahim for telling a story to all sections of the 2nd grade class.  The kids had fun listening to the story and making the project.

Mrs. Akbany - PreK-B

In honor of Dental Month, Prek-B read the story "Someone Stole My Smile." It's about a girl who loved her smile until she lost her front tooth. Then, she felt as if her pretty smile was gone.  After listening to this story, students created their own "missing smiles." We even had a parent, who is a dentist, come and show us how to properly brush and take good care of our teeth.

Mrs. Sheikh - 2A
My emerging authors have completed the final drafts of their autobiographies, which will be published soon. They also created body biographies, writing some fun facts about themselves that are displayed outside the classroom. In reading, kids read an interesting story about Mr. Tanin, a school principal who donated his ties to raise funds for the school playground, and had a discussion about raising money at the school dinner. My mathematicians mastered the concept of money and fractions. In social studies, students are learning about local, state, and federal governments and how leaders are elected. My scientists researched their dinosaurs and presented their reports to the class.

Mrs. Nabeel - 1C

Math: Students continue to enjoy math centers where they get to practice their math skills at different stations. Our students in first grade are mastering the skill of place- value, comparing, ordering and finding number patterns for numbers up to 40. For Groundhog's Day, the students enjoyed our mini-lesson where they got to share their prediction on a sticky note and come post it on the board. We used the data (predictions made) tally marks  to compare the numbers.

Reading: We are learning that making good predictions requires using context clues from the text such the title, words and picture/ photographs. After a picture walk, students got to share their prediction about the fantasy "The Big Race" and post their sticky notes on the animal (character) that they thought would win the big race. We discussed as a class each student's reasoning and thinking process.

Writing: Students were told to think of their favorite book to warm up on a snowy day. Each student shared a good book to warm up and why they recommend it.

Language Arts: Poets in the Making! First, the students were paired with a partner that they got the opportunity to interview and write a poem. We learned that poets have to be precise with their word choice so they can express their feelings in a hand full of words. During writing workshop, the students completed their rough drafts and worked on revising their poems until they thought it was perfect and ready to publish. Our poems are displayed in the library.  We wanted to thank Miss. Farah and Miss. Lena for letting us interview them as a whole class for our friendship poems. We enjoyed brainstorming nouns, adjectives and verbs to describe these two amazing teachers who always help fill our buckets.

Science: We have been learning about animals. The students enjoyed watching a Brainpop video where they learned how to classify animals. We want to thank Mrs. Shethwala (Amira's mom) and Mrs. Bushra
(Abdurrahman's mom) for coming in to do a fun frog craft project with our class.

Miss Umar - Physical Education

During the past couple of months, students have been deepening their knowledge of basketball and practicing their dribbling, passing, shooting and defensive skills. Some of the individual/partner/group drills we have done have helped with: chest and bounce passing, consistently dribbling with one hand through cones and an obstacle course, performing a power lay-up using the backboard, learning the triple-threat move, learning the defensive stance, etc. On fitness days, students have been enjoying themselves getting competitive and playing various team-building games such as powerball, jetball and dodgeball, and getting quite a workout!

Miss Bozai - 2C

February has been an exciting month in 2C.  In reading class we've been reading a realistic fiction story called "Luke Goes to Bat" that taught us about the importance of practicing anything we want to become great in.  In math class, we've been learning all about fractions! In science, we've begun our study of the solar system.

Thank you to Nazneen Ayoob for doing an amazing art project with us. Our canvases will be up for display in the library soon, inshallah.

And thanks to Mrs. Kamani, Mr. Kudzovic, and Mrs. Sheikh, who chaperoned our field trip to watch the performance of "Click, Clack, Moo: Cows that type."

Mrs. Kurtovic - PreK-A

This month in Pre-K A, we are learning letter recognition, letter sounds, how to skip-count by 10's to 100, how to read 3-letter words, write letters A-K and numbers 1-10. The recent alphabet letter we learned and practiced writing was letter L. We made an art project in reference to letter L by making ladybugs. Pre-K A students love writing, and they practice writing by writing their names, alphabet, sight words, and numbers. This month we had a lot of fun learning about penguins. We even tried to imitate how penguins waddle!! Pre-K A students made their own quilt using the alphabet letters and numbers while referencing the book called Cassie's Word Quilt.

Coach Kadir - Boys Basketball

Going into the season we had to focus on our goal of defending our two, back-to-back championships. It wasn't an easy task whatsoever because every other team's goal this year was to beat MCC Academy. There were many ups and downs throughout the season but we stuck together as a family. We won together and lost together. AlhumdilAllah, we played really well and finished with an 8-2 season and took home 2nd place in the Southwest Conference.
