March bustles in on windy feet
And sweeps my doorstep and my street.
She washes and cleans with pounding rains,
Scrubbing the earth of winter stains.
She shakes the grime from carpet green
Till naught but fresh new blades are seen.
Then, house in order, all neat as a pin,
She ushers gentle springtime in.

Save the Date...
Our 19th annual Angels Night Out will be Thursday, April 27. We've invited 67 restaurants to take part and contracts are still rolling in, so we don't yet have the official list of participating restaurants.  Stay tuned! We can tell you that we already have some new restaurants involved this year: Dr. Field Goods, La Fogata Grill and  La Boca. We also have some returning favorites including  Cowgirl, Andiamo!, Jambo, Santa Fe Bite and  The Ranch House. There will certainly be plenty of choices to satisfy every food craving. Participating restaurants donate 25% of the revenue from sales that day to Kitchen Angels. Many thanks in advance to all who help make this event special!

March is National Nutrition Month! Since we're in the business of feeding people, we give a lot of time and attention to proper nutrition.
Our frittatas would make a delicious breakfast!
For the past few months, Kitchen Angels' staff have been meeting every week to talk about our organization and how we envision it growing in the next five years. One idea that has captured out interest is the idea of providing breakfast to our clients. We have met with our nutritionist and food purveyors, and are in the early stages of creating a breakfast program. We've all been told that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. We hope that in the near future Kitchen Angels can help improve the food security of our clients even more by expanding our services in this important way. We will keep you posted!

It's time for our fans to nominate us for the 2017 Best of Santa Fe in the nonprofit category. Just so you know how amazing we are, last year 647 volunteers donated 35,525 hours of service! A whopping 55% of our volunteers are long-term, working with us from one to 25 years. Last year we served 405 people in our community, preventing hunger and keeping them in the comfort and safety of their own homes. Help us show the Santa Fe community what an important role we play by nominating us for the best nonprofit. Even if we don't win, our volunteers are always the "BEST" in our eyes. Thanks everyone!

Kitchenality
is having a Spring-Cleaning SALE and we want our volunteers to be the first to know about it! We're preparing for our upcoming renovation and trying to reduce our inventory. From March 1 to March 15, everything in the warehouse boutique with a red sticker will be 50% off! Hundreds of items will be discounted, so get 'em while they're on sale and before someone else beats you to it!

Our annual Pagosa Springs Getaway raffle is back! Tickets are now on sale for a chance to win a week's stay (August 5 through August 12) at a timeshare condo in Pagosa Springs! Popeye was on to something with his obsession over spinach! National Spinach Day is March 26 and we can't think of a better way to celebrate than to sing its praises and eat more of it! Spinach is low in fat and cholesterol, and high in niacin and zinc, as well as protein, fiber, vitamins A, C, E and K, thiamin, vitamin B6, folate, calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, copper, and manganese. It's good for your eyes, bones, skin, thyroid, digestion, prevents hair loss, and on and on. Here's an excellent website that tells about the history of spinach cultivation and 34 Science-Backed Health Benefits of Spinach. So much goodness in one little plant!

In case you're not convinced that spinach is indeed a super-food, here are 40 more reasons to devour the stuff... 40 Spinach Recipes to Make You Stronger than Popeye. Do you have a particularly fabulous recipe that showcase spinach? Let us know and we'll cook it for our clients and/or share it in the newsletter.

Special Volunteer Opportunity...

Angels Night Out is our flagship event, which is also one of our largest outreach efforts. For those of you unfamiliar with the event, on April 27, participating restaurants will donate 25% of their revenue from the day, to Kitchen Angels. You'll hear announcements on the radio and see advertisements in the newspaper.  We also have our volunteer ambassadors in each restaurant handing out raffle entries/donation envelopes and speaking with guests about our organization. Last year the event grossed over $62,000, with 64% of that amount brought in by the ambassadors.

Needless to say, Angels Night Out Ambassadors play a very important role in the event's success. This year we've invited 67 local restaurants to participate, which means we need A LOT of ambassadors! It's a fun community event, and it benefits our clients. Grab a partner and sign up to be an ambassador at one of the fabulous restaurants that are joining the event.

While contracts are still rolling in, here are some of the restaurants that are "probably" participating. The list is sure to change and grow over the next few weeks.

Even though March is National Nutrition Month, at Kitchen Angels, we focus on good nutrition every day of the week. We always cook diabetic-friendly, heart-healthy meals that are low in sodium. We typically use fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs in all of the meals we prepare. Many of our clients say that they've never eaten as well as when they were on service with Kitchen Angels!

It can be difficult to sort through the loads of information out there on different foods, their nutritional benefits, and correct portions. Not to mention the pressure that various food lobbies place on governmental recommendations! It's best to read a number of articles and papers from different sources to really separate truth from fiction. The World Health Organization website lays out basic definitions and provides hard data to back up their research. In the end, we all need to listen to what our own bodies.

It can be difficult to eat healthfully with so little time in our busy lives. Many people are turning to "Life Hacks," or strategies and techniques that are used to manage one's time and daily activities in a more efficient way. Here's a list of 25 life hacks to help people eat better.
Thank You, Thank You, Thank You! Thanks

Thanks to everyone who attended the Valentine's Volunteer Appreciation Party! The party was loads of fun! Congratulations to the winners of the dessert contest: First Prize went to Jim Brack for his Brooklyn Cheescake, Julee Angell took Second Prize for her Red Velvet cake, and Deborah Dennard won Third Prize for her blood orange cakelettes. Every dessert was outstanding. Thanks to everyone who participated.

The talent show was a sight to behold! Many thanks to the brave souls who stepped forward to showcase their fine skills. Bob Horwitz and Lisa Kadel demonstrated some impressive acrobatics that wowed us all (see video below). The Siler Road Sirens strummed, tapped and sang their way into your dreams. Deborah got us singing along to a rousing Food! Glorious Food! tribute to Kitchen Angels. Sarah Taylor and Juliana Lujan both wrote and recited poems. We hope to see even more people and talents displayed at next year's event!

You might not know this, but there's a fantastic group of young adults who volunteer every
KIVA volunteers Ish, Stephanie & Mead doing some heavy lifting before the volunteer party
Tuesday morning. The "KIVA kids" as they're affectionately know to us, help us with so many tasks. KIVA (Keeping Independent Visions Alive) serves transitioning graduates of Santa Fe public schools who were enrolled in special education programs while in school. These young adults, who range in age from 18 to 22 years old, volunteer at six different Santa Fe nonprofits throughout the week.

While at Kitchen Angels, they not only wash dishes and organize our paper bags, but they often work behind the scenes helping us set up for our special events. Last year they did a lot of prep work for our Spirit of Giving project, which helped it to be a smooth and efficient event. They just recently assisted in cleaning up the warehouse before the volunteer appreciation party. We truly rely on the assistance these young people give our organization. Give them a shout out next time you see them passing through- Thanks KIVA!

Last, but certainly not least, we'd like to say a great big THANK YOU to Brandi Fields for hosting her Oscar Party event that benefitted Kitchen Angels. It was a fun and fabulous event that was attended by 200+ people. Many thanks to the wonderful Sponsors, without which the event wouldn't have been possible: Eldorado Hotel, Trout Stalker Ranch, Hutton Broadcasting Southwest Care Center, Flow Science, Los Alamos National Bank, Crystal Springs, Corvue Holdings, Santa Fe Reporter, Eldorado Dental, Eldorado Animal Clinic, Santa Fe Motor Sports, Oriental Medicine Specialists, Boxcar, & RKW Enterprises. Our volunteers did a fabulous job working the event for 8+ hours! We extend gratitude to Elva & Bob Busch for their contribution, as well as the raffle and silent auction donors. We're honored to be this year's recipient of the proceeds from this lovely event. We wish Brandi all the best in her future endeavors!
