March 2017 Newsletter
Nebraska became a state on March 1, 1867, meaning this year is the 150th anniversary of statehood. Nebraskans all across the state will have the opportunity to commemorate and celebrate the Sesquicentennial anniversary all year long. Here are some ways you can get involved in the festivities:
  • Be active and participate in the Nebraska 150 Challenge by running, walking, biking or paddling 150 miles or more this year. Learn more about the challenge miles and opportunities here.
  • Volunteer for 150 hours and make an impact on your community. See all opportunities here
  • Exercise your mind. Participate in the Nebraska 150 Reading Challenge or check out the "Painting the Legacy of Nebraska" Exhibit. Then, share your story through "I Am Nebraska."

Medical Research Update

During the last week of December 2016, the FDA formally approved a new drug from Biogen called Spinraza (nusinersen) for the treatment of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA.) Just five years ago, there were no approved therapies to treat the underlying cause of SMA. MDA has funded foundational work in SMA and invested nearly $750,000 in awards for early-stage development of nusinersen. Since its inception, MDA has invested more than $45 million in SMA research. This breakthrough will help Nebraska families like Ollie's (pictured) and is only possible because of your gifts.

Story of Caring
This March, while many are getting ready to place their bets on men’s and women’s basketball tournaments, others like Kim are placing bets on how their MS diagnosis will impact their daily lives. “When you hear you’re diagnosed with MS, you basically think everything is going to end because there’s so much misinformation out there about it,” she said. “I was scared to death for two years not knowing what was going to happen, not knowing what was going to go on.”
