The Colour of Money
Colour can make or break a car.

A red Ferrari, a blue Subaru WRX, an orange Ford Mustang...all great. But a baby blue Fiat 500, bright green Audi RS7, or a hot-pink Porsche 911...well, what were they thinking?

A vehicle's colour has to be appropriate for that specific vehicle; an unforgettable hue on one model won't look good on another.

And the hottest colour today? White.

According to the Globe and Mail , c ar-colour trends often follow fashion and draw inspiration from nature, technology, and architecture. The upswing in white vehicles is connected to the white iPhones that debuted a few years ago. Blues and greens are also becoming more popular.

Staying on trend with colours have more benefits than just looking good -- autolist.com found that the colour of a vehicle can affect its resale value. In a study of 3.3 million vehicles on autolist.com, the site discovered there can be a difference of hundreds of dollars -- even as much as $1,000 -- between the most and least expensive colours.

The study found that white was the most expensive category among sedans, hatchbacks, and SUVs, averaging $198 above expectations.

Convertibles have the largest colour-based price difference: $727 from the most expensive colour (red) to the least (grey). For trucks, black is the most valuable, while blue is the cheapest.

Ultimately, if you're buying new, you want to buy a popular colour that will depreciate less, but if you're buying used, look for an unpopular colour to save some money. It's also best to avoid odd colours, like gold, altogether because they tend to be more volatile.

Best-in-class picks at the 2017 Canadian International Auto Show
The 2017 Canadian International Auto Show brought a plethora of new models to Toronto last month. For those of us who couldn't make it out to the show,  Wheels.ca picked their favourite vehicles in each segment.

Best New Compact: 2018 Hyundai Elantra GT

European styling had an influence on the next-generation offering from Hyundai, which features a large cascading grille, slender headlights, long hood, and short rear valance. The new Elantra GT will offer a 20-litre four-cylinder with 162 hp and the choice between a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

Best New Sports Sedan: Alfa Romeo Giulia

Stunning is the perfect word to describe this vehicle. With three trim levels, buyers can choose a 20-litre four-cylinder with 280 hp and 306 lb-ft of torque, or a 29-litre twin-turbo six-cylinder with 505 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque.

Best New Luxury Sedan: BMW M550i xDrive

The new M550i is the fastest non-M performance division car BMW has produced. Power comes from a 4.4-litre TwinPower turbocharged engine producing 456 hp and 480 lb-ft of torque. Options include adaptive suspension, an M-Sport steering rack, and an M-Sport performance exhaust system.

Best SUV/CUV: Volkswagen Atlas

VW's all-new seven-passenger crossover is striking in fit and finish. It offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink, and a 12-speaker Fender audio system. Buyers can choose between a 238-hp tuborcharged four-cylinder or a 280-hp six-cylinder with AWD.

Best New EV/Hybrid: Chevrolet Bolt

GM claims the new Bolt can get 383 km from a single charge -- roughly 48 more kms than the Tesla Model S. Tech offerings are also impressive: Regen On Demand and One Pedal Drive technologies allow you to slow the vehicle down or come to a complete stop without touching the brake pedal.

Best Minivan: Kia Sedona

Kia's design team has created an elegant, sporty minivan with seating for up to eight and great features, including navigation and autonomous braking. It also comes with the standard 276-hp six-cylinder connected to a six-speed transmission.

Best New Pick Up: Toyota Tundra TRD Pro

Eighteen-inch alloy wheels, 32-inch Michelin tires, and stainless steel exhaust pipes round out this truck's attractive exterior modifications. A 145-litre fuel tank means you can drive by a few gas stations with confidence. The TRD also comes with a 5.7-litre iForce V8 with 381 hp and 401 lb-ft. of torque.

Best New Sports Car: Mercedes-AMG GT R

Visually, this car is nothing short of brilliant. Equipped with a 577-hp 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, buyers can be sure this car is an absolute rocket ship.

Kia Targeting BMW with New Stinger Sedan
Kia revealed its most ambitious car yet at the 2017 North American International Auto Show last month. With the 2018 Stinger, Kia hopes to lure wealthy consumers away from BMW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz. While the automaker can't compete in terms of brand prestige, it has tried hard to compete on performance.

On paper, the Stinger certainly has the specs to compete against Germany's best offerings. The all-new fastback sedan is based on a rear-wheel drive chassis and powered by either a 255- or 365-horsepower engine, partnered with an eight-speed automatic gearbox.

The base Stinger is powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, while the 365-horsepower Stinger GT has a 3.3-litre twin-turbo V6. Kia claims it is exactly as quick as the BMW 340i.

In terms of design, the Stinger jumps right on the fastback sedan bandwagon, drawing design cues from the current Kia Optima sedan and the Kia GT concept shown at the 2011 Frankfurt motor show.

But where will the Stinger fit into Kia's crowded lineup and how much it will cost? For now, Kia isn't saying, but they'll probably have to undercut the price by a lot to have any chance of pulling buyers away from established premium cars.

More Drivers Take Route of Car Leasing
According to Edmunds.com, one-third of millennial car buyers chose a lease last year, which helped push auto lease volume in the U.S. to a record of 4.3 million and 31 per cent of all new auto purchases. Lease payments are typically lower than monthly loan payments for the same car, and many buyers, particularly younger buyers, are more likely to view cars as technology that needs to be continually upgraded.

Affordability Becoming Bigger Issue in Auto Sales
Bank of Nova Scotia says recent price increases for new cars and light trucks will probably drag on Canadian vehicle sales this year.

The bank released a report on Tuesday saying it expects 1.94 million passenger vehicles will be sold in Canada in 2017, down from the 1.95 million sold in 2016.

Scotiabank says affordability will factor into sales this year because the average price in the second half of last year was up 5 per cent to 6 per cent over comparable months, outpacing household income growth. That follows a period of price increases below growth in household incomes.

Sticker Situation: What's the Penalty for Expired Plates?
If stickerless cars are parked on the street, their owners could face a $30 fine in Toronto. The City requires that all vehicles parked on the street must be properly licensed, including a valid sticker.

However, if the vehicle with an expired sticker is on a private driveway, they're not breaking the law -- not until they leave it, at least.

Local bylaws cover parking, but if you're driving with an expired sticker, you're breaking provincial law. Driving with an expired sticker can cost you a $65 fine.

In 2014, 49,852 drivers were convicted under the section of Ontario's Highway Traffic Act pertaining to valid driving permits.

The Auto Trade Battle Heats Up

Auto makers have enjoyed tranquillity on the trade front in Canada for most of this century. But now Japan-based companies are pushing the federal government to negotiate a free-trade deal with Japan. Imports from Mexico are in the spotlight because of the Trump administration's promise to rewrite NAFTA.
