The proliferation of incidents involving gun violence, especially in our schools, is a horrifying call to action. Our children and teachers should not have to worry about whether it is safe to go to school.  And to suggest, as the POTUS has done, that teachers learn to use and carry guns might be the remedy makes me sick to my stomach. My article this month explores Connection And True Safety.

Looking at both the personal and cultural pain and trauma that underlie violence is critical.  Pain and trauma disconnect us from ourselves, from others and from the divine.  Healing is a process that helps us restore all forms of connection.

EKP apprenticeship graduate Larry Cotton has been doing important healing work with men in prison through the Jericho Circles project.  I was very moved to see the movie, "The Work," filmed at Folsom Prison in California, that chronicles this important work.

If you have an interest in seeing this film, please e-mail me.  I have organized two dates for people to view the work, thanks to Larry's graciousness.

"For one human to love another; that is perhaps the most difficult of all tasks, the ultimate, the last test and proof, the work for which all other work is but preparation. "

~Ranier Maria Rilke

"Love alone is capable of uniting living beings in such a way as to complete and fulfill them, for it alone takes them and joins them by what is deepest in themselves. ."

"Love springs from awareness It is only inasmuch as you see someone as he or shed really is here and now and not as they are in your memory or your desire or your imagination or projection that you can truly love them ."

Connection And True Safety
With all the cultural violence we are living through right now, sadly too often it is hard to truly feel safe.  Schools, libraries and churches are places we would expect to be safe.  One could argue that each of these places is even sacred.  But the pain and disconnection that is ripping through both individual people and our society as a whole has brought violence into all of these safe, sacred spaces.

Even when we suspect violence is to come, as those close to Nikolas Cruz, who killed 17 people at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida did, and as neighbors of Jeffrey Yao, who killed a woman and wounded a man at the Winchester Public Library in Winchester, Massachusetts reported and feared, the pathway to make a difference and stop potential violence is not clear.  People reported concerns about Cruz to appropriate authorities.  Nothing was done.  Neighbors feared Yao would kill someone.  Sure enough, he did.

What is EKP?
EKP is Emotional-Kinesthetic Psychotherapy, a heart-centered, body-centered psychotherapy method Linda Marks developed and has taught and practiced for nearly twenty years. Working with the heart, touch with permission, the wisdom of the body and the intuitive guidance of the spirit, EKP creates a special sense of intimacy that deeply touches and transforms most all who participate.

Participants can be "client," witness or helper as an individual group member has a "turn" to do deeper heart-centered, body-centered psychospiritual work in the center. Since the electromagnetic field of the heart extends out 10 - 12 feet from our bodies, as we go deeper and open our hearts, we are all touched.

EKP helps restore our capacity as organs of perception. The skin is our largest organ, and a source of soul deep knowing, perception and expression. When our hearts and hands can work as one, we move beyond defenses safely and respectfully and find freedom, connection and expression.

Emotional safety is the foundation of EKP.  When we are emotionally safe, we are more aware of feelings, sensations and deeper thoughts in our bodies and hearts.  You will have a chance to listen to and care for your heart as you help create and hold a safe healing space for everyone's heart.  Experience what we mean when we say that in EKP, "when anyone has a turn, everyone has a turn."
