"O For A Closer Walk"
Happy Friday!

Enjoy this video from worship on February 19. Brian Batch joined the Chancel Choir in this beautiful piece, "O for a Closer Walk." Those who worship at  the 9:40 am CrossRoads service enjoy Brian's talents every Sunday, but we don't see him that often in the sanctuary services. Thanks to Brian and the Chancel Choir!

Enjoy this First Church news!
This week in worship...February Sermon Series
Sermon Series
Sermon Series: CrossWalk
The central identifying symbol of our Christian faith is the cross.  While we may cherish "the old rugged cross" and what Jesus did for us there, it also represents a calling to live a certain kind of life that puts us in direct conflict with the values and understandings of those around us.  Combined with beautiful and inspiring music, the CrossWalk sermon series will offer an intriguing and moving view of the Passion of Christ that is sure to prepare each of us for a fresh experience of Holy Week and the triumph of Easter.
Sermon Title: "Lord, Is it I?"

Scripture:    Matthew 26:17-30

Dr. Will Cotton will preach at the 9:40 and 11 am worship services this Sunday. Rev. Katie Meek will preach at the 8:30 am service.  The Source , our weekly devotional guide, is available on the church website

Our children's choir, Alleluia Ensemble, will sing at the 8:30 and 11 am services. We will celebrate the sacrament of Holy Communion at all services.

Please join us in worship this Sunday at  8:30 am (Sanctuary), 9:40 am (FLC), or 11 am (Sanctuary).
Words from Will...
In Our Guests' Shoes
Last week, I wrote about FRAN, an acronym for Friends, Relatives, Acquaintances and Neighbors.  Nearly 4/5 of first-time guests who come to a church come because they were invited by someone they love and respect. That leaves only 20% that come because of a certain ministry, the beauty of the facilities, or because of the reputation of the preacher. But even so, we cannot understate the courage it takes for a guest to come into our facilities for the first time. Where do I park, what building do I need to go to, and once I get there, where should I sit? The challenge is finding who can answer those questions. Some churches have people who have identifying shirts or vests, both inside and outside, so that people know who they can talk to. What I am suggesting here is that we add to our great Andrew Ministry and Greeters, so that people are made to feel comfortable as soon as they arrive. The average time it takes for a guest to decide if they will return to a worship service is 7 minutes!

Dr. Will Cotton
Then, once the service begins, we need to remember that making a mistake in public or being singled out are two of the greatest fears for first-time guests. Many years ago, it was discovered that asking guests to stand up and introduce themselves ran-off most people, as did having all the members stand and leave the guests seated! Without being overly verbose, it is a healthy thing to explain what we are going to do in the worship service. Guests really do want to stand at the right time and say or sing the right words. Worship services, in the name of being succinct and reverent, can become insider activities. We know the opposite extreme of being too chatty and flippant, but erring on the side of creating an even playing field where everyone can worship at the throne of grace is where we need to be.

Last, when the service is over, offer to take a guest to lunch. Some will refuse, because they have other things to do or are not ready for that kind of connection. That is more than okay. The ones who do this with the most effective results are youth. I have rarely seen a parent of a teen who is approached by other teens to take their daughter or son to lunch decline the invitation. But how do you know a person is a guest? That's part of the next installment of All About Fran.

Sincerely in Christ,

Will Cotton Signature

Backpack Project

We're making Spring Break Kits next Saturday, March 4!
What:  Building kits for students' Spring Break meals.
Where: Palm Valley Lutheran Church, 2500 E Palm Valley Blvd (SH 79), rain or shine.
When: Saturday, March 4, 9 am-12 pm. We will work until we run out of food, which may be well before our official Noon stopping time.  If you are delivering food, please plan to arrive by 8:30-8:45 am so we can get it organized.

This is a great way to help those children who depend on school lunches and may not have much to eat during Spring Break. Come join us!   Click to learn more about the First Church Backpack Project.
We will publish our 2017 Guide Book and Directory soon.

2017 Guide Book & Directory is coming soon.
We are in the process of updating our annual Guide Book & Directory for the church. This book will contain everything pertinent to our church: the various ministries, organizations, committees, activities, functions and events plus a complete directory of all members. This book is being provided and direct-mailed to each family at no cost to our church, and it is again being subsidized by local businesses that advertise. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, see more information below.

It's time to update your membership information

The directory will include your name, address, phone and email address. Now is the time to go to myFirstChurch and make sure our church database has your correct information. Have you changed your phone number? Have you moved? Are you preparing to move soon? Are all of your children still at home and are they all included in your membership record?

How do you update your info?

Click the myFirstChurch button on the website homepage. Create your login and password (if you have not yet done so), login and go to My Profile to make sure your phone numbers, email and address are correct. Click here for step by step instructions.

Do you want your record published?

You may opt out of publishing your information. In myFirst Church, go to My Account/Personal Preferences where you can indicate which information you would like published in any church directory.

Interested in advertising in the Directory?

Local advertisers make it possible for the directory to be mailed to each First Church family at no cost to the church. If you own or manage a business and would like to find out about advertising in our book, please contact Betty Robertson, betty@fumc-rr.org, or call the church office at 512.255.3336.

Recent survey results by Guide Book Publishing show that 92.1% of families would rather patronize a Guide Book & Directory advertiser over a non-advertiser. It will pay to advertise in our new Guide Book & Directory.
