First Church News & Updates - March 31, 2017

Great Day of Service
Tomorrow is our Great Day of Service...a day when people of all ages from First Church will be out in the greater Round Rock community serving others. We appreciate all the volunteers and look forward to seeing you Saturday morning.

Enjoy this First Church news!
This week in worship...Lenten Sermon Series
Sermon Series
Sermon Series: CrossWalk
The central identifying symbol of our Christian faith is the cross.  While we may cherish "the old rugged cross" and what Jesus did for us there, it also represents a calling to live a certain kind of life that puts us in direct conflict with the values and understandings of those around us.  Combined with beautiful and inspiring music, the CrossWalk sermon series will offer an intriguing and moving view of the Passion of Christ that is sure to prepare each of us for a fresh experience of Holy Week and the triumph of Easter.

"Watch the Lamb"
Sermon Title: "Jesus, Remember Me"

Scripture:     Luke 23:32-43

Dr. Will Cotton will preach at the 9:40 and 11 am worship services this Sunday. Rev. Katie Meek will preach at the 8:30 am service. Our newest handbell team, Ring of Joy, will be ringing at the sanctuary services.  The Source , our weekly devotional guide, is available on the church website

Holy Communion will be celebrated at all services.

In case you missed it last Sunday, Michael Rosensteel, Director of Music Ministry, sang Watch the Lamb. Listen and enjoy.

Please join us in worship this Sunday at  8:30 am (Sanctuary), 9:40 am (FLC), or 11 am (Sanctuary).

  2. Encountering the means of mockery and death

Yes...We will have a Flowering Cross!

Everyone is invited to bring fresh, cut flowers on Easter morning to create our Flowering Cross. The cross will be prominently placed outside the church so that flowers can be placed on the mesh frame, as a sign and witness to the joy and beauty of our Easter proclamation, "Christ Is Risen!"

New Podcast Series...What Actually Happened on the Cross?
Lenten Podcast
What Actually Happened on the Cross?
Check out the First Church Podcast for a four-week series on what actually happened on the cross. What did Jesus accomplish with his death? How was God's power shown? How do we relate to sin and evil now that the cross has happened? Did Jesus have to be raised for the cross to be complete? Most people say that Jesus died for my sins. What does that mean? And does that tell the whole story?

The third podcast will be posted on Friday. You can subscribe through  iTunes  or by following us on  Soundcloud . You can also find information at http://fumc-rr.org/podcasts. Subscribe to the podcasts so you won't miss any.
Resurrection Celebration is coming up on April 9
Resurrection Celebration
Resurrection Celebration...a Holy Week Tradition at First Church
The event will be held on Palm Sunday, April 9, 9:30-11:30 am. Children, accompanied by parents, will get to experience five events that occurred during Holy Week. There will be volunteers in costume and in character portraying someone who was actually present during Holy Week. They will talk about the importance of each event in terms children can understand.

Begin your journey on Palm Sunday with Lewis the Donkey, who will be grazing under the Council Oak Tree, near the playground. Children's programming will continue as normal on Palm  Sunday . Resurrection Celebration will run for two hours so your family will have options on when you would like to attend. Please allow 50 minutes to visit all five stations.
Mission Focus...
Diaper Drive
A very successful Diaper Drive
Children's Ministries teamed with the Ministry of Motherhood for a mission for Austin Diaper Bank during January and February. The Austin Diaper Bank provides diapers to any family in need of diapers in Central Texas. We applaud the children and families who contributed 2109 diapers for this mission! Over $160 was also donated through children's  Sunday  School offering.

United Methodist Men
United Methodist Men invites you!
United Methodist Men (UMM) promotes the spiritual growth of men through effective discipleship, and models the servant leadership of Christ in our daily lives. We have two UMM groups at First Church.
  • The Tuesday group gathers between 8 & 9 am at The Egg and I restaurant in LaFrontera for food and fellowship. Contact: Rich Thompson at 512.694.6729, or Ben Watson at 512.623.0025.
  • The Wednesday group meets for breakfast and fellowship at 6:15 am on Wednesdays in the Family Life Center. Contact: Steve McCord, mccords1007@yahoo.com.
Both groups participate in UMM special events and activities. Several times a year, they spend the weekend cooking either brisket, chicken, or chili and then showing up on Sunday morning to sell them during worship services...all of the proceeds to benefit the ministries of First Church. All men are welcome to join one of these groups or launch a new group of United Methodist Men.
