Society's Act Transition Workshop

The Workshop : There are more than 27,000 non-profit societies in BC, providing services and programs that touch virtually every citizen. The BC Society Act, which provides the rules for governance and incorporation of non-profits, officially proclaimed important changes on November 28, 2016. There will be a two year transition period by which time all societies in BC will have to make the switch to the new Act.

All organizations that are incorporated under the current Society Act must plan to complete their "transition application," with revised constitution and bylaws, by the time of their 2017 AGM. This workshop will provide the information on the bylaw and policy changes necessary for your organization to effectively make the transition.

The Facilitator:  Martha Rans is the Legal Director of Pacific Legal Education Outreach Society (PLEO), which operates Artists' Legal Outreach and Law for Nonprofits programs. She has been practicing law in British Columbia since 1997, and works extensively with arts organizations, non-profit societies and visual and multimedia digital artists.

We strongly recommend that attendees review our online resources prior to the workshop, so that they can come with questions about the transition process:
 Legal Self Assessment Tool
 Facilitated Webinar

The Chamber of Commerce will be hosting this workshop in partnership with the Town of Qualicum Beach on Friday April 7 at the Civic Centre starting at 9 am. This is a half-day workshop; Cost is $22 per person. Must be registered and paid by March 24th - first come first served. There are a few spots left - call 250-752-0960.

This Just In...

The Provincial Government announced yesterday that ride sharing services, like Uber, will be coming to BC in time for the holidays this year.

Recommendations made by the BC Chamber in 2016 include:
  • Streamlining licensing requirements to ensure that the same safety standards are applied to both taxi and ride share providers, effectively phasing out the requirement for taxi drivers to obtain a Class 4 driver's license
  • Ensuring that taxis retain exclusive rights to be hired by phone, at a taxi stand or hailed down on the street, whereas ride sharing services may only be hired through the company smartphone app
  • Allowing taxi drivers to pick-up passengers outside the jurisdiction where they are licensed to ensure that that taxi drivers can operate on a level playing field by having the same access to provide services wherever and whenever a passenger needs a ride.
