March 2016

 From the Director's Desk...

Making community change happen is tough.  I found the following quote and it resonated with me and perhaps you as well, "Even when we feel helpless and useless, unable to change the world or make our mark on the world, the truth is, every single one of us has immense potential to make a difference."
This past month we had a very successful day educating people at the Iowa Capital.  I stayed to listen to the Legislative hearing on the proposed expansion of the CBD bill.   When the time came to open the floor to anyone opposed, there was no one who took the position at the table.  As a parent, I approached the table and asked for the legislatures to proceed with caution because we have seen the impact on youth use with states who have opened up the laws around marijuana (medical or recreational).  I was joined in voice by Peter Komendowski with the Partnership for Drug Free Iowa.  See the news coverage here.

  • We know that even without any changes in Iowa law, we are seeing our youth entering treatment report marijuana as their drug of choice
  • We know that youth perception of risk has decreased around marijuana
  • Representative Baxter stated that our "voice of reason" is often the quietest voice and  does not have the number of people behind it that the pro-marijuana folks have.  We need to realize that even a quick note or a comment to your re presentative when you see them in the grocery store it is important and it matters.  To assist in your education efforts we have this link which drives you back to the AC4C website with facts that should matter if you care about kids -  If you care about

One last request is for your attendance at the March Retreat.  We will have our federal program officer joining us and to have a full retreat would be great. You can register now.  Remember that Camp Dodge offers low cost lodging options and even has some free lodging options for those that could not come otherwise (contact Angie if you wish to know about this).

As always thanks for all you do as each piece makes the statewide effort more solid - we couldn't do what we do without all of you!
    Until next time... Angie
