Current news from Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church
-- a place of safety --
May 1, 2017                                   Vol. 18, Issue 5
  Greetings!

You have just received the May 1, 2017 Chrysalis - the newsletter of Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church. Please read through it for information concerning events during the coming month. Chrysalis will be published by the office staff, in this form, near the first of each month -- with special editions during the month (as warranted).

If you desire a printed copy of the Chrysalis you may print this email version (as with any email you receive). There will also be a few printed copies in the narthex for visitors and for members of HRLC who do not have printing capabilities. [Note: This is an email newsletter and does not paginate the way a non-email newsletter might.]

Should you accidentally (or deliberately) delete this email, you may also find a link to the Chrysalis on our web site (www.hrlcsj.org).
  Update to "Those Who Serve"

Another  update of the "Those Who Serve" chart was sent out to the congregation on April 20. Please look it over and note if the dates of any of your service have been changed. These changes were necessitated by the institution of the Worship Liturgy Assistants and are an attempt to utilize more voices during the actual worship service, as well as to not make the Liturgy Assistants do additional tasks during worship.

We cannot promise that this will be the last change, as we try to accommodate the volunteers that help with worship (whom we appreciate tremendously), but we will keep you up to date regularly as to what is going on. In the meantime, if you are scheduled for a time that you are unable to do a volunteer job, please be sure to get a replacement for yourself and to let both Iris and Pastor John know about the change.

Season of Creation cancelled during 2017

The decade long observance of the Season of Creation  will not take place during 2017, as there are not enough volunteers to adequately conduct the worship services. It takes between 8 and 10 volunteers to do justice to the services which the developers of the Season of Creation have written, and at this point in time we simply do not have the volunteers needed to undertake this worship experience this year.

As a result of this decision the remainder of this church year will be as follows:

  1. The Season of Easter will run through June 4, culminating on Pentecost Sunday.
  2. The Season of Pentecost-Summer will run from June 11 through August 13. Trinity Sunday is June 11 and the remainder of the days will be Pentecost-Summer 2 through 10.
  3. The Season of Sabbath Economics will run from August 20 through September 20.
  4. The Season of Pentecost-Autumn will run from September 24 through November 12. Rainbow Covenant Sunday will be September 24' Animal Blessing Sunday will be October 1; these will be followed by Pentecost-Autumn 2 through 6. This season will culminate with Reformation Sunday (October 29), All Saints Day (November 5) and Christ the King Sunday (November 12).

The 2017-2018 Church Year will commence on November 19 with 3 Sundays of Advent, followed by the first 3 Sundays of Christmas.

Movies with Pastor John -- Make Up

We gather on May 27 at 9:00am in the Bangsund Room to view another movie about a great musician who died too young. This time:

                                     Sweet Dreams

This is the story of Patsy Cline, celebrated country singer best known for her crossover hits "Crazy" and "Walking After Midnight." She was born in 1936 in Winchester, Virginia and died on March 5, 1963 in a plan crash in Camden, Tennessee, At the time of her death she was 26 years old.

Come a little early and get some popcorn and settle in to watch a movie about one of the truly great singers of our time, who like so many others blazed brightly across the heavens of the music scene and then died too young.

We run harder to win.
We work harder to break even.
We piece our lives together
               one cubit at a time
and we are left weary by our anxiety.
And then, in the midst of our fatigue,
          come your sovereign commandments.
We are made mindful
          that you are the glue
that connects our present and our future.
You are the link
that makes continuity between our choices and our destinies,
b etween our much striving and our inescapable outcomes.
And we,
shocked by your relentless, uncompromising, coherence,
                    break from our idols
and slouch toward the neighborhood where you will us to be.

We are felled into a company of brothers and sisters
                who care for us and
           who call us to care,
                neighbors all.
We find open air
                and free space
           and save companions
                         whereby we may quit running
                                                    and working
                                                    and exhausting.
We  fall back into our simplicity,
faithful to you and to neighbors,
jut as you command us

A direct and compelling headline
Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for? (Audience) Why should they care? (Benefit) What do I want them to do here? (Call-to-Action).

Create a great offer by adding words like "free" "personalized" "complimentary" or "customized." A sense of urgency often helps readers take an action, so think about inserting phrases like "for a limited time only" or "only 7 remaining!"
