Artistic Director's Message

Dear Friends,

The month of March features two very special programs. On March 7th, we return to the Seattle Art Museum for our free Sparks of Glory concert. Our program features music by two American and two Israeli composers whose works touch on the emotional struggle of loss and destruction, and the renewal of self and community. The program compliments SAM's exhibition: Indigenous Beauty: Masterworks of American Indian Art from the Diker Collection. It is one of the most exquisite collections of Native American art in private hands. We hope to see you there and that you'll also take advantage of the opportunity to view some of the important and fascinating art works on display.

At the end of March, the distinguished German conductor Guenter Buchwald's returns to lead our MOR artists in Betty Olivero's klezmer-infused score for The Golem, along with a complete screening of the classic 1920 silent film. Olivero's stunning music is a tour-de-force for clarinet, and our performance features the incomparable Laura DeLuca.

It's always gratifying when the media offer us chances to reach new people across the region, and to connect again with our friends. You can listen to our artists performing David Stock's A Vanished World by tuning into C lassical King FM 98.1 on Wednesday, March 4th at approximately 9:40 p.m.

A s always, I'll look forward to seeing and hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Mina

P.S. The annual Powell-Heller Holocaust Conference at Pacific Lutheran University begins on March 4 and runs through March 6. Its subject, Children's Voices: The Holocaust and Beyond, will bring together an important and diverse group of educators, scholars, survivors and their families. I'll have the honor of introducing Ela Stein Weissberger, a familiar face to our MOR audiences from our performances of Brundibar.  Ela played the role of The Cat in all 55 Terezin performances and she will be discussing what the experience meant to her and the other children. Experience the Classic Silent Film  The Golem
The Golem
MONDAY, March 30, 2015 at 7:30 P.M.
Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, Benaroya Hall

This spring MOR will bring its Seattle audience a rare treat with a complete screening of the classic German expressionist film The Golem, accompanied by a live performance of Israeli composer Betty Olivero's dazzling Klezmer-infused score. Guest conductor Guenter Buchwald will travel from Freiburg, Germany to lead this special production. Buchwald is known around the world for his mastery of the silent cinema repertoire; he led the Vienna world premiere of Olivero's film score. MOR's concert extends this musical exploration of Jewish mythology with two works based on the legend of the Dybbuk - a dislocated spirit that invades and possesses the soul of a living person. Joel Engel composed The Dybbuk Suite as the original incidental music for the play by S. Ansky that anchored Eastern Europe's flourishing Yiddish theater for nearly 20 years between the world wars. David Beigelman wrote his haunting Dybbuk Dances in the Lodz Ghetto, where productions of the play by the ghetto's tortured occupants represented a reminder of what had once been normality. The audience will also welcome the return of the talented 13-year-old violinist Takumi Taguchi in a soulful melody by Joseph Achron. We hope you will join us for this thrilling musical event!

Gertrude Stein and Pablo Picasso Meet Again in After Life
After Life
MONDAY, May 11, 2015 at 7:30 P.M.
Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, Benaroya Hall

P ablo Picasso and Gertrude Stein meet again - and argue about art and life - in the world premiere of

After Life, a new opera by Guggenheim-award winning composer Tom Cipullo and librettist David Mason, commissioned by MOR. Imagining a posthumous conversation between these two artistic giants, this musical drama reflects on the artist's responsibilities in a time of war. With a lively suite by Darius Milhaud, and a spirited jazz-like musical farce by Paul Bowles, an American expatriot who became part of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas' circle, you'll breathe the exuberant energy that made 1920's Paris the destination of artists and intellectuals from everywhere.
