Bridge Survey for Boaters

The Office of the County Engineer Division at the Pierce County Public Works Department is currently conducting a very brief anonymous survey (5 minutes or less) asking for commercial and recreational vessel operators' opinions about height clearances needed for bridges. The results of this project will help with engineering decisions about upcoming bridge replacement projects. We're reaching out to you to ensure that your voice is heard.

You can participate in the survey by clicking on this link.  Please complete the survey by March 5, 2017 By participating you become eligible to win one of three $100 Amazon gift cards (being offered by PRR, Inc., the survey company conducting this survey). If you have any questions about the survey please contact research@prrbiz.com .

Thank you for your participation!
Crime Watch Tip of the Month

Your Citizen Patrol Team, now 13 strong, is continually working in keeping our island as safe as possible. However, we only supplement what the residents are able to do on a much broader scale. Thanks to all your efforts over this past year, we have not seen an increase in crimes on Fox Island. According to the Pierce County Sheriff's Department, both 2015 and 2016 ended with 55 reported crimes.  However, there was a shift in crimes. Auto theft and residential burglary were down. Increases were noticed in crimes of fraud, forgery and drug use and sales.

Every resident has it within their control to help prevent home break-ins and auto thefts. Locking your doors and window and removing targeted merchandise from your vehicles will help minimize break-ins. The Sheriff's Department has said that such actions has helped with these reductions. Please keep up the good work and we will continue to work hand-in-hand with you on this effort. Our team members are identified by their bright yellow jackets and hats with Citizen Patrol marked on the cap. In addition, their cars have signage on the sides, back and front windows. Working with the cooperation of the Sheriff' Department, they patrol the island, observe school bus schedules and perform house checks. We also have been employing off duty deputies to supplement our efforts.

This month we wish to bring to your attention the availability of street address signs at your local Gig Harbor Fire Station on Kimball Drive. The cost is $12.50 per sign. Each sign indicates your address in white numbers on a red background and can be mounted either vertically or horizontal. Why would we recommend that sign? Response times of our first responders, in case of an emergency, might be less if they can faster identify your location. Also, as part of your Fox Island Emergency Preparedness Plan, your neighborhood Block Captain(BC) or patrolling Citizen Patrol members, would be able to faster locate your residence. Please give that some thought! Click here to access the sign order form

Finally, as you will note above, fraud and forgery are the areas of increased crimes. Please be careful with phone solicitations. During the course of a pre-recorded incoming conversation, you might be requested to respond to a question in the affirmative. That might be used against you in ordering a product or service-so please be careful

Fox Island Emergency Plan

Your Emergency Preparation Team continues to work on expanding our teams including backups for critical positions. We encourage all residents to participate in one of the teams as follows:

Neighborhood- Help organize your neighborhood as a Block Captain (BC) or backup your BC.

Communications- Join a team of experienced HAM or radio operators that form the communications network during an emergency. (Training provided)

Medical- Use your medical training to assist in our Triage Center or Shelters or travel with Citizen Patrol member where needed on the island.

Shelter- Help with compassion to make a resident's stay at one of our shelters (Alliance Church or UCC) one of safety and comfort.

Boaters- Join a fellowship of boaters that provide evacuations or secure needed supplies.

Infrastructure- Use your background in heavy equipment or light equipment to keep roads open during an emergency.

Citizen Patrol- Join a team that provides transportation and communications throughout the island.

We hope you will consider participation as we can use lots of help! Go to FICRA.org to volunteer.

During the month of May, we plan an open house to demonstrate your team's preparedness to date and hopefully an update on the bridge. Stay tuned to FICRA.ORG for dates and times.

New Fox Island Community Calendar
We are excited to announce that we have a new island-wide community calendar in works! This calendar will be used to list events taking place at FICRA, the Chapel, the Museum, the churches, the yacht club and even Zog's. The purpose of this calendar is to avoid planning events that compete for island audiences. Many of the events are open to the public, others are not. Those that are not open to the public are included for help with scheduling. An example of this is the Chapel Board meeting that involves about 10 people who might want to attend something going on at the NCC on the same night.

Note that this is not for reserving the NCC or other facilities. Those reservations processes will continue as they have been. If you have events that you would like to see listed on our calendar, send an email to ficranews@gmail.com. Make sure to give the location, time and whether the event is open to the public.

About FICRA

The Fox Island Community & Recreation Association (FICRA) was formed in 1970. Its purpose is to promote matters pertaining to the health and safety of Fox Island residents, to promote the welfare and development of Fox Island, and to provide recreation and social activities of a non profit nature as a public service to the residents of Fox Island.

The FICRA Building Trust operates and maintains the Nichols Community Center, the Fox Island Playground and the adjacent Fox Island Nature Center.  FICRA and the FICRA Trust are volunteer organizations that are here to serve our Island community by providing many great social and recreational activities for islanders to enjoy.

FICRA relies on its many volunteer members to make it all happen, from the Easter Egg Hunt, The Plant Sale and Student Award Competition in the Spring, Fox Island Fair in the Summer, concerts, Christmas Tree Lighting and our Party with a Purpose event in the Winter. Come join us and see how you can help FICRA continue to provide many great activities for our community to enjoy. Go to  ficra.org and click on the 'contact us' button, or e-mail us directly at  info@ficra.org. We are always looking for volunteers.

To become more familiar with what these organizations do and their great value to the Fox Island community, attend a monthly Board meeting (open to the public). We'll be glad to show you around. You may also call the FICRA President, Jim Braden, at 253-459-5588 for more information.
