Spring Fever
Apparently I have picked the best winter to move from the East Coast to the Midwest. I was prepared to battle the freezing temperatures all winter, and oh boy, the month of February was anything but completely frozen. I think it is fair to say that Spring Fever has hit many of us already.

So whether March truly comes in like a lion and out like a lamb, we're ready for Spring here at SCVH. Check out all the news we have in this edition of the Habitat News Tribune. We've got stories from recent volunteer projects, updates on future events, and exciting announcements you won't want to miss.

Happy March,
Tiffany

St. Croix Valley WeBuild Center

St Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity has just been awarded a grant from the Otto Bremer Foundation to convert its former River Falls ReStore into a volunteer hub, workshop and training space. The St Croix Valley WeBuild Center will be used for, training, teaching, tool repair and maintenance and equipment storage. In addition to pre-fabricating components used in new home construction and home repair projects, the WeBuild Center will host "hands-on" programs on home maintenance and energy management for Habitat and community homeowners. Preparation of the WeBuild Center has already begun and programs will be announced later this spring. Stay tuned!
Thank You!

Our corporate, foundation, faith, and individual partners are important to us. The work of SCVH wouldn't be possible without our partners, and we are thankful to be a recipient of the Otto Bremer Foundation grant.

St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity Receives United Way Grants

St. Croix Valley Habitat for Humanity (SCVHFH) is especially grateful to have received a yearly grant for the last 10 years from the United Way of St. Croix Valley. These grant funds have been used for specific home construction projects for Habitat for Humanity houses in St. Croix and Pierce counties, Wisconsin. The houses are built with the assistance of many volunteers and licensed subcontractors, and sold to the homeowner at cost. Applicants need to qualify according to need, ability to pay and willingness to partner. The United Way partners with corporations, nonprofits, donors and volunteers to build a better community.

Volunteer Spotlight
Salvation Army - Grace Place

SCVH volunteers partnered with Salvation Army - Grace Place in New Richmond at the end of February to help complete repair projects on the shelter facility.

" The goal of Grace Place Shelter is to promote self-sufficiency by providing a safe and secure environment, giving individuals the opportunity to overcome unresolved issues. Through education, individuals are encouraged to be responsible for themselves and others. During their 30-90 day stay we identify any immediate needs and develop a housing stabilization plan for the family. Our extensive program empowers individuals and families to become independent, creating a safer community for all of us."

We are thankful for organizations like Salvation Army - Grace place in our community, and are grateful for the opportunity to partner with them on projects. Thank you to the volunteers who helped make this opportunity a success!
United Natural Foods, Inc (UNFI)

On February 23rd and March 2nd, a total of 7 volunteers from United Natural Foods, Inc in Prescott volunteered with SCVH. The volunteers were eager to complete any task put in front of them and even had the chance to put their creativity to the test. This abundance of warm weather has everyone thinking spring and the volunteers helped us create some garden decorations.

The UNFI volunteers built wooden dragonfly garden decorations utilizing scrap ceiling fan blades and wooden table legs. Another project incorporated glass globe light fixtures. Volunteers mixed concrete and peat moss to create a lightweight, yet durable product that was poured into the the glass globes. Once the mixture dries, the glass will be removed and a garden ball decoration will be revealed. These garden balls can be painted and decorated to create fun, creative, and whimsical garden decorations -- the perfect addition to an outdoor space.

These garden decorations are great example of how we strive to recycle and reuse materials that would otherwise end up in a landfill. Check out some photos from the two volunteer days below.

Thank you UNFI for your support of SCVH!

We look forward to another year filled with ABWK projects.
