Nominate IABC London’s first
Outstanding Communicator Award recipient
IABC London is excited to introduce the Outstanding Communicator Award (OCA) — a prestigious new award that recognizes an individual who exemplifies excellence in communications and demonstrates strong commitment to communications in their professional work. The IABC London OCA will be awarded for the first time in June, 2017.
Jo Ann Johnston, ABC, President of IABC London, initiated the creation of the OCA for the IABC London chapter. We had a chance to talk to Jo Ann about why this award is important, what it means to be an outstanding communicator, tips for submitting a strong nomination, and more.
Q. As President of IABC London, you initiated the creation of the OCA for the London chapter. Why?
A. For the past 22 years, IABC London's Virtuoso Awards have recognized excellence in communications management and the best in creative strategy and design. This year, the chapter is evolving our awards program to include the recognition of an outstanding individual — IABC member or non-member — to which others can aspire. We are following on the heels of other chapters, like IABC Toronto's Communicator of the Year award, IABC Edmonton's Awards of Distinction, and IABC Newfoundland & Labrador's Pinnacle Award of Excellence for Organizational Leaders that applaud the people who provide leadership to those who do great work.
Q. What does it take/what does it mean to be an outstanding communicator?
A. You must be a senior leader who promotes a culture of communication within your organization — located in London or the surrounding area. Your exceptional leadership has contributed to the overall positive reputation of the communications profession and you have set a standard of excellence to which others can aspire. Do you fit the bill or know someone who does? Nominate them and include up to three letters of support.
Q. Why would you encourage members of the London community to nominate their leader(s) or colleague(s) for the OCA?
A. This new award is a great opportunity to recognize how visionary leadership creates strong companies and brands through effective use of communications. I encourage members and non-members to nominate an outstanding business leader and be a part of this inaugural and monumental award. The deadline for submissions is April 14, 2017.
Q. What tips do you have for putting together a strong OCA nomination?
A. A strong nomination includes a summary of the nominee’s successes and contributions to the communications profession, describes exceptional leadership and communications skills, and includes a reference letter or two. Nomination forms can be downloaded from IABC London’s website.
Q. Is there anything else you would like to add about the IABC London OCA?
A. The first ever IABC London Outstanding Communicator will be recognized at the IABC Virtuoso Celebration on June 1, 2017. We are looking forward to showcasing a local leader who exemplifies excellence in business communications. It will be exciting to see who our first IABC London Outstanding Communicator will be. And, don't forget to get your Virtuoso Celebration tickets, you won't want to miss this!

Q. Where do you work? What is your role, including responsibilities and projects?
A. I have been with Amway Canada Corporation for 38 years, having started in the mailroom on a 30-day temporary assignment. I had the privilege of working in a number of departments over the years and was given so many wonderful opportunities to grow and develop. In the mid-80s, I took on a communications role in the marketing department. Over the years, we grew communications to the point that it became a stand-alone department and, in 2001 I was promoted to a management role, responsible for communications, public relations, and government affairs.
