Kits: Not Just for Teachers
When you visit Youth Services at Braswell Library, you know that you will find a huge collection of fiction and nonfiction books to pique the interest of our younger readers. You also expect to find computers with kid friendly educational games.
One resource you might not know about are Teacher Kits. These are kits that assemble a variety of books and other items, related to a theme, and the whole kit checks-out as a unit. The kits cover dozens of topics including dinosaurs and the American Revolution.
Each kit contains five books, lessons plans, activities and at least one hands-on item. Each one also has a pathfinder that leads to other books and resources for more information related to the theme. Teacher kits are perfect for classroom, daycare, and homeschool use.
Pro Tips for Library Searches

Discover more of your favorite materials by experimenting with searching.  To search for library material from BML's home page, enter the library online catalog by typing in the search box in the upper left of the screen and clicking Search or Enter.
If you don't know an exact title or if there are many items with the same title that you want, find the search box at the top of the screen and type a combination of author's last name and part of the title, such as "hotel Irving" to find John Irving's Hotel New Hampshire .  When you see your title, click on the title for more information.  Then click on All Copies on the left to see the title at all locations. Click on the author's name to see more titles by the author. Click on a subject listed to get a listing of books with the same subject.
Search by genre by typing Christian Fiction or Mystery Fiction .  Refine your search by clicking on words at the left of screen: Book or Video Recording, New Titles.
Click on Advanced Search under the regular search box to refine your search, as well. You're a search pro now!

From the Director:
Artist Jim Wordsworth

Braswell Library is delighted to feature the artwork of Mr. Jim Wordsworth in the Gallery on the second floor throughout the month of March.
Jim built his first boat at age fourteen and from then he was hooked! His passion for boats, the waterfront and coastal communities has been captured in the series of watercolors currently on display.
Growing up, Jim traveled up and down the North Carolina Outer Banks with his family. Later, he and his wife honeymooned on Ocracoke in the late 1950's when $8.00 would afford you two meals and a clean room with the bath down the hall. Over his lifetime Jim has seen the coastal area transform from sleepy rural fishing outposts to posh tourist getaways with all the amenities.

Jim's paintings evoke the southern hospitality of seaside cottages with wide porches and lots of laughter. Boats swing to their moorings, live oaks spread their branches and lighthouses dot the horizon. A self-taught artist, Jim has had one-man shows in Beaufort, Rocky Mount, Greenville, Wilson, Chapel Hill and Kill Devil Hills.
Meet the artist and learn more about his adventures at a reception on March 9th from 5:30 to 7:30 pm at Braswell Library. Fine art prints produced from his original watercolors will be available for purchase.

History Harvest at Braswell Library

The Rocky Mount Mills History Harvest at Braswell Library on Saturday Feb. 25 was a huge success with 75 people, including community members as well as UNC faculty and students, in attendance.

Scanning stations and analog to digital conversion stations were available in the Warner Room to scan and convert participants' materials (photos, home movies, etc.) into a digital format.
People interested in telling their stories about the mill headed to the 2 nd floor study rooms to be interviewed and recorded. Six oral history interviews were conducted upstairs while many other participants enjoyed sharing materials and stories downstairs.

Materials from the library's Local History Collection on display in the Warner Room prompted memories and stories about past events when the mill was in full swing.
Participants brought all kinds of interesting historical materials to share, including report cards from the Rocky Mount Mills School and Rocky Mount telephone books from the 1920s.
An unexpected treat was the visit of Milton Bullock from Tarboro, one of the Platters, who entertained participants by sharing his own story and singing "Only You."

We hope to repeat this event soon - please come out for our next one and share your mill memories and stories! Many thanks to Elijah Gaddis, Project Manager with  Communityhistories.org. and Capital Broadcasting, our heroes in this history harvest.

New Job Resource Center at Braswell

Braswell Memorial Library will soon feature a new Job Resource Center to help combat the unemployment rates in Nash and Edgecombe Counties. The Job Resource Center will provide basic, free assistance from employment specialist and trained library staff. The center will also offer free computer use, printing, scanning, and faxing for job seekers. The services offered will include: free job listings, resume writing assistance, online job application assistance, and training for interviewing skills. The Job Resource Center is the result of Adult Services Librarian Kesha Joyner's commitment to serve job seekers in this area. Joyner said "I see patrons on a daily basis who are seeking employment. These job seekers range from young adults to senior citizens, all from diverse backgrounds. In the Digital Age, job applications are accessed online. Many of the job seekers are digital immigrants instead of digital natives and this a major barrier for those seeking employment."

Braswell Library is hoping to break these barriers so that our patrons will become informed and empowered citizens. Job seekers will be able to visit the Job Resource Center located in the 2 nd floor Computer Lab during Braswell Memorial Library's normal business hours. The official Grand Opening of the Job Resource Center will be on March 16 th from 4-6pm.

Reading Builds School Success
Early Literacy is critical in preparing young children for success in school. The Youth Services Department of Braswell Memorial Library fosters young learners by encouraging reading and creativity.
Studies show that children who have been read to at home from birth enter school with important early literacy skills regardless of the language spoken at home. They are better prepared to learn reading and writing skills. Through programs and educational activities, Braswell Library provides support to parents and caregivers to help develop early literacy and learning skills in children. Parents are encouraged to read with their child every day and to come to the library together to pick out books, participate in story times, and engage in library programs. Strong reading skills form the basis for learning in all subjects.
1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a fun and easy way to develop reading rituals. For more information call Braswell Library at: 252-442-1951.
