"There continue to be alarmingly high levels of
unprotected sex as well as poor knowledge of
effective contraceptive options among young
people in the UK.
These are the conclusions of Clueless or clued up: your right to be informed about contraception, the third multinational survey to mark World Contraception Day (WCD).
The survey found that 43% of sexually active young people in the UK have had sex with a new partner without using contraception. This represents an increase from the 36% reporting unprotected sex in the 2009 WCD survey. Of the girls surveyed, 55% now have a close friend or family member who has had an unplanned pregnancy
compared to 36% in 2009.  More young people are reporting unprotected sex because their partner -
more often the male - does not like contraception: 23% in 2011 compared to
7% in 2009. More positively, fewer young people say that alcohol has made them forget about contraception, with 15% saying that they were drunk and forgot compared with 24% in 2009. Only 55% of the girls surveyed in the UK consider themselves very well informed about all available contraceptive options compared to 62% of boys. Teenagers say they are too
embarrassed to ask healthcare professionals about contraception, and that they cannot rely on schools.

Overall, 16% of boys and girls do not trust their teachers to provide accurate and unbiased
information about contraception, while 19% of girls and 16% of
boys report not receiving any kind of sex education at school.
WCD takes place on 26 September every year. It is supported by
international non-governmental organisations and scientific and medical societies with an interest in sexual and reproductive health, and is sponsored by Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals.
This year's survey was conducted among 6,026 young people in
29 countries throughout the world. For more information on World Contraception Day, go to

Greetings!

"I've been so happy visiting schools and colleges in February and travelling the UK to do training of different kinds - all young people focussed, sometimes confidence building, sometimes sex and relationships and sometimes young enterprise/Prince's Trust.  I have been delighted to work with 2 different groups of post-16's, one group is  BTec Health and Social Care at Glossopdale and the other at Hurtwood House in Dorking.

"Please Email  or call me on 01457 850860 if you would like me (Barbara) to come and deliver a session.  The hands on sessions with TSE and BSE awareness models and condom demonstrators along with the interactive sessions using "Turning Point" audience response keypads have been particularly well received.

"Our next international trip is to Bangkok on 29th March and will be here before my next newsletter.  I will be speaking at the Siamcare supporters seminar, before heading off to visit sponsor children in Mukdahan.  Contraception Education will be back in action in the UK on 11th April."

This month I would like to bring your attention to an amazing pop up book called the Facts of Life. This is a fascinating study of sex, conception and reproduction and is a great accompaniment to any RSE session where the biological aspects need a quick explanation with visuals.   I have been using this successfully for many years.  I now have some second hand copies in excellent condition.
