March 2018, New Beginning
Greetings!

Yesterday morning I had the privilege of helping three families change their lives in different, but wonderful, ways.

The first family needed to refinance the no interest mortgage on their Habitat CFC home. The homeowner has been a model of responsibility – caring for his home and making monthly payments, but an unanticipated health issue has arisen – and, in spite of his best efforts, he has fallen behind. Habitat CFC changed the terms of his mortgage, so he can stay in his home, focus on getting better – and continue to make timely payments – now at a level that he can comfortably afford.

The second family came in to sell their Habitat CFC home back to us. The home has already done what it was intended to do – provide stability, warmth and shelter to a family for almost ten years – and, as a result, they were able to purchase a larger home on their own to meet the needs of a growing family. This well-built Habitat CFC home will be quickly rehabbed and resold to another hard-working local family.

The morning ended with the sale of a Habitat CFC home to a new homeowner. In this case, the home and the new owner are a perfect match. She successfully raised her children and now needs a stable, affordable home for herself. She didn’t want a lot of space – but room to welcome her children and grandchildren matter. Today, she is the third owner of a one bedroom condominium that Habitat CFC rehabbed just for her.

I had originally thought of these stories as happy endings – but I realize, as we approach the celebrations of Passover and Easter – that they are actually, in the spirit of the season – new beginnings. On behalf of the above three families and countless others – I thank all of you for making them happen!

Habitat CFC News
A Collegiate Challenge Volunteer's Story....

This Spring Break, Bradjanaii Butler, a Collegiate Challenge volunteer from Albertus Magnus College, volunteered for Habitat CFC and found herself on a street full of memories.

“Service is selfless, and requires no thought. Community is unified, and filled with pride. Habitat for Humanity embodies these pillars, said Bradjanaii. “I have been adamant about helping individuals in need since I was in high school; taking two trips with my alma mater, Harding High School, to North Carolina to build homes with Habitat for Humanity of Forsyth County. Five years later, I now attend Albertus Magnus College and have had the honorable pleasure of serving at Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County for my spring break. This week of service was near and dear to me not because I was giving back to my birth city, but to the neighborhood that raised me. Upon entering the warehouse I was unaware of where exactly the projects were taking place. When we were given the address I realized it was where my late Great Aunt Trudy’s house used to stand; it was less than one block away from my childhood home.”

Dedication Cermony

On March 10 Habitat CFC held a dedication ceremony for Ada Morales , our newest homeowner!

What is special about refurbished condo is that it has been a Habitat property for almost 30 years. Two other Habitat CFC homeowners have lived in the condo and have now moved on allowing Ada the opportunity to obtain this affordable home from Habitat CFC.
