Interns to Present to City Council

The Chamber participated in the Healdsburg High School internship program by hosting two interns. We were so impressed and pleased with Taylor and Kelly. Their work product, a survey of downtown businesses, is very informative. They not only were able to survey the sentiments of the downtown business community in regards to the parking issues in downtown, they also gathered information about how many workers there are, where they come to work from, how they arrive and if they drive, where they park. Since parking has become a hot button issue in the downtown and one that residents have expressed strong concerns about to the City Council, it was important to gather information from the business community and hear their concerns as well. Kelly and Taylor will be presenting their findings to the City Council on April 6 at 6:00 pm.

I would particularly like to thank Aleena Decker, the Chamber Administrative Assistant, who worked directly with the interns helping them to track and compile their results as well as being an enthusiastic cheerleader for their successful completion of their task.

Healdsburg Chamber Sponsors the Mike Hauser Algebra Academy Again
Looking for Business Participation

The Mike Hauser Algebra Academy is a program of the Santa Rosa Chamber of Commerce that the Healdsburg Chamber participated in last year. This program aims to strengthen the algebra skills of English Language Learners (ELL) students entering the ninth grade by engaging them in interactive, hands-on learning guided by local teachers, engineers and technical experts.  Healdsburg will once again be participating this year. Last year the Healdsburg Fire Department, Healdsburg Airport, Metier, Max Machinery, E&M Electric, Costeaux Bakery, Max Processing and Sonoma Millworks welcomed students, giving them hands-on, real life experience using math in the workplace.

We are currently asking for greater participation from the business community. Are you able to host students for 1 or more days so they can see how math is applied in the real world?  The dates for this year's academy are June 8 through June 26.

Workforce development is important to the success of Healdsburg's business community. It is our goal to improve the skill level of your future employees. Can you help us?

Please email [email protected] or 433-6935 if you are able to help with this very important project.

New Programs for Local Employers by the EDB

Local employers are invited to take advantage of a new program
offered by the
Sonoma County Workforce Investment Board and Job Link, which will help local employers subsidize their orientation/on-boarding and training costs for new hires.  This program can pay for 50% of an individual's wage, (up to $10,000 or six months), to local employers for each new eligible person they hire, to help compensate for training costs.

This program called "On-the-Job" training or OJT is available now, until funding runs out.

What is OJT?

OJT is a method of training sponsored by Job Link, which connects employers with subsidies when they hire qualified and eligible job seekers.  The program reimburses employers 50% of a new hire's wage up to six months or $10,000 (whichever comes first).  This money can offset training costs, production losses, and supervision time.

Do I Get to Choose Who To Hire?

ALWAYS!  Your staffing choices remain your decision.  Job Link can offer assistance if you need to identify a person who is already qualified for OJT, or they can conduct an eligibility assessment on a person you've chosen to hire through other means.  It usually takes a week to qualify and assess your chosen candidate to determine their eligibility for OJT.  (All eligibility assessments must occur prior to the hire date.  Not all job seekers qualify.)

How Quickly Am I Reimbursed?

Job Link works quickly to process reimbursements on a monthly or quarterly basis.

How do we get the process started?

To learn more about OJT, or get started on the process contact

Jordan Vineyard & Winery Named American Winery of the Year

Every year Wine Enthusiasts Magazine recognizes individuals and wineries for their commitment, over the top quality, and ground breaking innovations to the wine industry.Every aspect of a winery is observed from the care of the grapes, to the wine making process, to the distribution and marketing teams. It is no surprise then that Wine Enthusiasts Magazine named Jordan Vineyard & Winery American Winery of the Year. Their scenic grounds, beautifully crafted wines, and entertaining videos are just a few qualities about Jordan that earned them the award.

HYPE's Youngest Member

He may be only 10 years old, but Healdsburg Young Professionals & Entrepreneurs' newest member, Cooper Inman, means business! Cooper runs his own local coffee delivery business; Cooper's Coffee Delivery. The following is an interview with the young business sage.
Cooper Inman, Owner of Cooper's Coffee Delivery. Order coffee at  [email protected]

How long have you been in business?

I have had Cooper's Coffee Delivery for 3 years now. I started it when I was 7 years old.

What made you decide to go into business?

I worked with my Dad on the business. I wanted to start it because I had a lot of business ideas at the time and he said we should pick one we could work on together and see if we could make it work. I wrote a business plan about the business. My dad and I talked about it for a few months and then he loaned the business the money to get it started. I was able to pay off the original loan within my first year.

How do you transport the coffee?

Mostly, I deliver my coffee by bike with a trailer attached. if the delivery is close by, I will usually walk it over. My territory is around a few miles from my house. I do have outlets for my coffee downtown at Bradford Brenner art and at Split Creek Farm store behind C. Donatello Wine.

What kind of coffee do you offer?

We created one blend that works for both espresso as well as brewed coffee. Similar to the Italian brands Illy and Lavazza. We offer this blend in two roast colors "Cooper's Light" and "Cooper's Dark."

What was the hardest part about starting Cooper's Coffee?

The hardest part about starting my business was the amount of time it took to get it known. I had placed samples of both my coffees with a letter describing my business on the porches of over 400 homes. That took a long time to complete. I started the business in Sebastopol and then had to start all over when I moved to Healdsburg. It took about 2 months to get any orders initially. It was a big investment in coffee and time to spread the word. Now it is pretty easy as all I have to do is just get the order and process. I still drop samples as I expand my delivery route, but not as hard as the initial outreach. I work now on new product ideas and expanding my offerings into equipment- filters, coffee drippers, scales, etc.

What is your favorite part about owning your own business?

My favorite part of owning my own business is the money I earn from it. Some of the income goes back into the business and some to my college fund, but the rest I get to have. I just got a gaming computer for Christmas and I spend a lot of my money on new games. I also got to go to Roasters Guild www.roastersguild.org  (a trade guild of professional coffee roasters) and liked working with other roasters on team challenges. I am the youngest member of the guild and liked giving out my business cards and talking about my business while learning about other coffee businesses.

Do you have any advice for other people thinking about starting a business?

My best advice for anyone starting their own business is to be patient. It takes a long time for your business to get noticed and grow. You have to be ready to work hard, harder than you imagine at first. But make a business you will like and will have fun doing. This way you will not get bored and want to quit doing it.

Visitor Bureau Outings

In order for the volunteers to ensure visitors and residents have a wonderful time in Healdsburg, they first need to experience it for themselves and then report back. Thank you to 32 Winds Wine, Lambert Bridge Winery, Mauritson Family Winery, and Wine Country Walking Tours for showing the Visitor Bureau team what a good time looks like (although they are pretty good at that anyway).
